    I’M THE FREEZE DRYING MAMA!
    I’m Bonnie and by day I work as a full time, USA Today Best-Selling Author with multiple pen names while homeschooling my 6 beautiful children, as well as running three other companies from my home. By night, I freeze dry everything I can get my hands on. I won’t say I’ve gone so far as to take the food off my kids’ plates, but I won’t say I haven’t either.
    Research for one of my pen names that specializes in apocalyptic thriller fiction as well as other survivor fiction led me to an obsession in prepping. But I don’t want to pack away 52 tons of raw wheat. I want to go into the End of the World with Spaghetti O’s and ice cream sandwiches. With my freeze dryer, now, I can.
    You’ll find tips and tricks for Freeze Drying your foods whether you’re looking to bolster your food storage, prep for a camp out, pack lighter snacks for a hike, or just come up with different ways to save your leftovers.
    I’m also a huge keto eater. I’ve been eating the keto lifestyle for over a year now and most of my food storage has been centered around incorporating keto friendly foods. Surprisingly, this can be a lot of things. Click on the keto category under Foods and Recipes and you’ll find plenty of recipes and foods that you can freeze dry for your keto lifestyle - snacks, long term, or just a way to save room in your fridge. If you’re not interested in keto, but you’d like to eat all the foods, try anything we’ve got listed over in the foods and recipes section. One of my favorites and easiest is the raw egg powder!
    One of my favorite things, is hearing from other Freeze Dryers. Don’t hesitate to join me at / freezedryingmama and let’s get real about Freeze Drying and how it can help our families.

    Can you recommend a good freeze dryer? All I find are food dehydrators and from my understanding they're different?

    Not alone in the freeze drying excitement... but you *may* be alone in geeking out about the science! LOL I'm content to call it voodoo magic and just enjoy the end results. Cooking and baking is my love language too, but my 20 year old has never been a foodie. In fact, he's still a picky eater despite all my efforts. Imagine my frustration when I hoped to be the Betty Crocker/ Koolaid Mom and I gave birth to a kid who would rather be IV fed than to eat. Ugh! I swear its not my cooking... he doesn't like store bought or restaurant foods either. No cookies, no candy, no veggies. But he is a carnivore and will eat any meat, even obscure ones. Go figure. My hubby isn't big on sweets either, so I can't use either of them as an excuse to make brownies! If I'm craving brownies I have to deliver some to neighbors so I don't eat them all myself 😋

      Oh that is hilarious. Thank you for commenting. I love hearing about other people who love food. The science is often hard to find others who love it lol, but at least we're both addicted to freeze drying! hahaha Thank you!

    What an excellent teacher you are! I think I may have to watch this a few times to let the info sink in though. I thought it was called sublimation... but maybe that is part of the process of lyophilization? Is that right? Hubby googled it but the explanation made my brain hurt! I like your comment about the freeze dried ice cubes though, they would be handy to have in storage ... so would water but what would you rehydrate it with?(Hehe)
    Have you tried watermelon? We picked a monster one from the garden the other day and after eating heaps the remainder was too big to fit in the fridge so I freeze dried some. It was amazing! I didn't think there would be much left after the water was removed but it was the tastiest watermelon "cookie" ever. My friends are constantly amazed at the flavour and texture of the food we are producing. My sister loved it so much she filled a basket full of freeze dried produce as her birthday gift. Now it's back to work filling up my stash before my daughter comes to visit!

      Helen, you're so fun! Thanks for the sweet comment. When anything solid turns into a gas without first becoming liquid, that's sublimation. And yes it is a hugely important part of the lyophilization process. LOL! rehydrate the ice cubes hahahaha. That was funny. Watermelon sounds awesome. We're not yet in our summer reaping season yet. I'm excited to try it! I don't like watermelon from the stores. They're not quite as sweet. Time to fill up! lol Love it!

    When it comes to meat would you recommend cooking it first or freeze drying it uncooked?

    • @FreezeDryingMama
      @FreezeDryingMama  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Debra, it depends on what your goal is for your meat - if you're planning on cooking it when you pull it from storage, then you can do it raw, but I'm creating a food storage to eventually pull from when we're on the run or out of power or something. I like the cooked options because 1. it's easy to toss water on and eat or just eat straight out of the storage. I prefer cooked, but others prefer raw. It really is a personal choice. I don't think either way is bad. :) Thanks for commenting.

    But don’t you lower the evaporation point also as you lower the air pressure under vacuum for example it should take far less heat for water to Richards evaporation point under such low pressure

    • @FreezeDryingMama
      @FreezeDryingMama  3 роки тому

      yes, definitely, that does come into play. It's just REALLY hard to show and explain when I'm evaporating outside of a vacuum. Lol. I would love to show that though. It would be awesome.

    I really enjoyed your explanation of the freeze drying and the steps that it takes the food through. And the explanation of the egg and alcohol I am going to show that to my grand children that are homeschooled and let them see what happens. I do wish you would do the video on the egg and the vodka with a little bit more explaining on that so I can pass that information onto the kids
