FYI - the o-ring goes on top of the tank. There's a recess for it in the part of the standpipe that sits on top of the plastic fuel tank.

Top tip, you can also install the fuel pickup tube in to the cap of a standard gas can for a swap out fuel tank

I use a gas can drill a hole in the cap and push the fuel line in works great and easy to find at any gas station auto store.

Try putting the inline fuel filter right before the pump, then check how much further it shoots out of the line when disconnected from the main body. Observe without filter & with filter comparison.

I think a boat motor fuel tank will work for my heater. It already has an access to plug into so it's just a matter of adapting my fuel line to fit the hose fitting on the tank. I want to be able to unplug it and take it out to fill it incase of a spill or if I want to just take it to a gas station to refill.

I also tried to use a standpipe from the cap of a rotopax tank. Worked initially. Lost prime, was cold. Added an outboard motor bulb. Eventually, that was allowing air in the system and a loss of fuel. Frustration got the better of me, and I drilled the bottom of my tank for a good old fashioned gravity feed. No leaks. Heater works again. The more I think about it, I probably should’ve given more thought to other weak points in my system that had nothing to do with the ability of my pump to overcome the gravity of the standpipe. 😢

I removed the fuel filter after this last major service, I think that helped a lot. these little pumps don't like any extra work. It fired right up at 11,300 ft.

Did you have a vent cap on the rotopax?

As far as venting my rotopax, I’m relying on remembering to open the cap a bit when I get where I’m going. The hardest part is remembering to close it tight again when I strike camp.

Your O-Ring should be on the top surface of the tank.

Almost looks like you are losing prime with the door opened and pump laying more in a horizontal orientation? maybe just unmount the pump and hold it more vertical (as when the door is closed) during manual priming? then again, could just be the angle that you filmed from and the pump really isn't laying horizontal?

Hey Strat, it just looks that way, it sits at about a 45 when the door is closed. I think the fuel line was getting kinked. It has been running like a charm since. I think removing the fuel filter has helped

What is the Stand Pipe for? Explain the basics

Hey Jeff, good point, I left out. One main reason is these bottom connections are somewhat common to leak, so you have the chance of leaking fuel.

I am glad to see others have technical difficulties with doing what others make appear flawless if I don't do it 2 times it won't be done right at all lol😂

I don't believe your dirt issue was from the cap vent. You made the comment your fuel was old and it was a grungy yellow color so that is an issue, second where are you buying your fuel, and last what type of a container are you storing it in.The residue I saw in the bottom of your old tank tells me your getting moisture in the fuel. Use a fuel conditioner that will help with the dirty fuel and dry up water Don't purchase more fuel than you'll actually use.And DON'T let your fuel sit for more than a month before you use it.I guess the filter trick on the cap couldn't hurt but think abut this every lawn mower ever made has a vented cap why doesn't trash get into those fuel tanks? Just something to think about. One more thing the white fuel line has to be pushed tight up against the inlet/outlet nipple of your pump and the bottom of your heater. Pushing the fuel line through the rubber hose used to make that connection can be tough but can be done.
