Cruise and Leo are probably the only actors that could really sell a movie just because they're in it at this point. There're some directors that also have that influence like Quentin, Nolan, I would still say Spielberg and Eastwood can get people to the theater most of the time.

Same goes for Brad Pitt and if Leonardo De Caprio wasn’t only in Scorsese and Tarantino movies he would probably be the same. If anything I’d say directors or an ensemble cast can sell movies more than one actor nowadays. Look at films like Oppenheimer with having Nolan’s name attached and then the ensemble cast he brought in, or even Dune with Villeneuve and the cast he got. People feel more confident with hearing a talented filmmaker bringing together a cast that you know will bring their A game more than just an actor or actress being apart of some big IP.

    • @VicenteTorresAliasVits

"Dune" *was* based on an I.P. though. It's not the most popular book on the planet and I'm sure that, as you said, audiences were drawn to the names attached to the movie. I'm saying that it's not the best example for this conversation.

  • @liquor-pinata9770

It also annoys me when people say there’s only sequels nowadays and no originals 🙄. A24, Neon and other indie distributors release a ton of original work all the time that are great, it’s just the average movie goer doesn’t bother to watch them. So really the audience has no one else to blame but themselves on that front.

This is why I loved once upon a Time in Hollywood’s meaning that everyone seem to just miss. Rick Dalton is a character that’s struggling between Hollywood changing and if he doesn’t make a career change immediately for him himself, he’s gonna be left behind. Rick decided to do the films. He did not want to do it all nor did he like them, but it’s either that or let Hollywood forget about you forever.
Actors right now are struggling on what to do for survival to stay reverent in the spotlight. If you have to do things like stay in front of the spotlight with a very popular IP to stay relevant, then that’s what you have to do for survival. Everyone was saying Margot Robbie is no longer a star, but the moment she did Barbie and it made $1 billion at the box office.
Is all the proof that you need for survival. If you’re tied in with a very popular franchise, you have better luck now. 😞

    • @Mickey-1994
      @Mickey-1994 28 днів тому +1

Quentin's point would also be correct here, Barbie didn't make a billion because people cared about Margot Robbie. It's based off the most iconic girls toy of all time. It was going to be a hit no matter what. Transformer movies are also terrible but most of them have made a billion dollars.

Cruise, Keanu, Pitt, Clooney, Denzel, Stallone, Dicaprio, Jolie and Dwayne are the only ones I can think of that are still currently active where if they headlined an original (non-IP) studio picture that was aggressively marketed, could still draw a massive opening weekend.

It's a shame because they used to make such a variety of different movies with interesting settings and themes because it was guaranteed to sell if attached to the right actor. • @cardongray5761

I think we're in an age where a great actor being in a movie doesn't mean that the movie is great.
That has kind of fallen to the director. We are in age where people care A LOT more about who's directing a movie. Directors are the new Movie Stars. To the point where, Oppenheimer made close to $1 Billion, purely based on it being a movie made by Christopher Nolan, tackling an interesting story of history.
Oppenheimer made that much money because of Nolan, not Cillian Murphy or RDJ. (Despite how good of a performance they had in the movie).

I wonder when actors will start getting pay cuts. As you said, it’s just not worth it to pay them so much anymore when their name alone won’t sell tickets like stars used to. It’ll be interesting to see how the next generation of movie actors behaves when they have to live like normal people, making a normal income. I wonder if we’ll hear them lecture us about all the things we’re doing that’s supposedly killing the planet and who we should and shouldn’t vote for, when they realize their voice and their personas matter less and less as the years go on.

I think movies stars exist but in conjunction with IPs. Sony wouldn’t agree to make Uncharted unless it had Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg in it. They also would never agree to make an original adventure movie with those two actors unless it was attached to a known successful brand. Having both big stars and a big ip is what studios want right now, although it’s clearly not what most people want since Uncharted was not a popular movie lol

Its just not the stars time. Like many other things, the movie biz goes in cycles. Depending on the era, the studios had their time, as did directors, as did stars. The big IPs have shined recently because they are pure spectacle. Larger than life if you will. But as alot of that is falling to the wayside, we also are coming back around to certain directors and studios being reliable. May not be selling the most tickets, but they produce a profit. The days of the movie star will eventually come back around.

Movie stars don't sell tickets because the information about them is available thanks to the internet. So we can find out all the good and bad(always bad) news about them as individuals. I dissagree about the franchises are making money. Most of the big franchises lost money in 2023: Ant-Man 3, Fast X, MI Dead Reckoning, etc. Apart from 2 exceptions like Across The Spiderverse & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. That's it. The ones that made the most money are Barbie, Oppenheimer, & Super Mario Bros Movie. I think it's more about the mentality of an individual and picking which movie is a must see in theaters. While others he can wait to drop on vod. Just look at how many movies have droped on vod after their theatrical release. The Fall Guy droped on vod while the movie is still playing in theaters.

In my opinion, the era of actors having their own genres is gone, because actors want to avoid being typecasted (being cast as a similar character multiple movies), so in my opinion, that's why they're aren't a lot of actors who have their own genres (like Will Ferrell and Stallone)
Plus a lot of sleezy movie companies like to bring big names into their movies (looking at you Netflix) like to bring them into their low-quality movies as a marketing scheme, making the act of having a famous actor lose a little bit of guaranteed credibility

That is true to a point but the 80s, 90s and even 2000s were still creating new franchises and making a lot of middle budget movies in different genres. Things started to change in the 2010s with the decline of physical media and people going to the theater less overall unless it was a big blockbuster movie like the MCU or Star Wars. Hollywood has taken less chances in recent years and sadly a lot of the studios from the 70s, 80s and so on are gone. Disney, Warner Brothers and a few more own everything which is bad for all of us.
