I also really love some of the other Pokémon “hometown” themes, particularly Littleroot Town, Twinleaf Town, Aspertia City from B2W2 (❤❤), and while it’s not a hometown per se Iki Town night scratches that same itch. All incredible tracks and all have their own take on what it means to be “home”, tons of unexplored nostalgia content in these tracks alone 😌

The tracks on many Nintendo DS, including all of the Pokemon titles were sequenced, meaning all of the note and sample data is there, being played in real time by the game. There are tools made to extract that note data, converting it to midi without the need for transcription.
3:14 "how do we take something that was not written for ... piano and make it something that we can ... play on the piano." I can not count the number of times I have run into this dilemma, especially when doing out some of the more complex movie scores that I have on my channel. The craziest ones so far have been "This is Berk", from How to Train Your Dragon; "I Was Born for This," from the game Journey; and "Maelstrom," from Pirates of the Caribbean.
I absolutely love this! I started doing a Music in Video Games unit with my 7/8th grade general music class because I love diving into music and why these songs works so well and they’re all having a blast with it. I’m hoping I can someday play piano and work through these scores like you can

I’d like to hear you dissect some of the techniques used in A Hopeless Race from Final Fantasy XIV. Idk how Keiko makes one piano sound like 3 different instruments but somehow she’s doing it lol. The arrangement from the game makes my head spin it’s incredible.
Makes sense because arguably Cynthia is the most challenging Champion. Soo the game deserves to have you walk around with amazing soundtracks most difficult games do. #Castlevania2 and Zelda 2
You might want to look at classical master transcribers such as Liszt or Godowsky to see how it is in fact possible to arrange highly polyphonic or even symphonic music while keeping the polyphony intact. It often relies on alot of pedal for bass notes, sharing one melody between the hands and so on, crucially, to do it you have to do a lot of octave displacements. It's certainly possible to do that with this one, the only thing is the exakt rhythmic bassline probably has to be compromised for something different.

Ear! I think pretty much everyone starts by ear at least to some degree. As a kid, trying to get me to read sheet music was like pulling teeth😂I learned a lot of things by sight and ear. I would watch over my teacher's shoulder and use my ears and sight memory to mimic what his hands were doing until it sounded right. This is fine to start, particularly when we're young. But as painful and "boring" as it was to young me, learning to read unlocked the entire world, musically. It's tough, but worth it!
Unfortunately not everyone learns to play by ear. Most classical teachers nowadays systematically teach just reading notes, and that's how you train score dependant musicians and why most classical musicians can't improvise. Check out Sietze de Vries, he has a whole series on that topic (he can improvise in true Bach style, check out his improvised Fugue on "Herzlich tut mich verlangen", it's almost the real Bach)

The VGM Real Book was mainly created by the people over at the VGM jam sessions in New York (including myself haha). The real book is not as vast as VGLeadsheets, but keeps that homegrown nature by including a lot of tunes that people bring to the jam session
That chord you debated with the Bb bass isn't Bb7. The Ab is completely off. It's more like Asus4/Bb. Pretty sure there is an A natural there and possibly an E natural too Asus4 is everywhere in this piece. For example the D/F# chord you debated as well Dsus2/F# or Asus4/F# whatever. Even the 4 chord would sound fine without the F# and just Asus4/G

You know, I never even considered writing it in 12/8, but you absolutely could! I think it's partially because I never felt the tune in anything other than 4/4, just with a swung 8th note. Personally, I find 12/8 to be kind of wonky to write in and read, but that's just me. I'd prefer reading triplets in 4/4, but that definitely doesn't mean it's the "right" way or the only way!
Fun video, but oof you gotta watch your rhythm groupings in the notation (especially in such a syncopated piece). Some of your transcriptions in your "full score" is a tad off as well, which is kinda a shame :/
I feel like when it comes to arranging being a jazz pianist is holding you back a little. Of course it's very convenient if the right hand plays a single melody and the left hand plays the chords, but piano solos can be so much more! As a pianist who focused on solo piano pieces from movie and game soundtracks for the most part of my practice, it's totally normal to play two or even three different voices within a single hand. Restricting the right hand to only play either the piano part or the sax part just doesnt make sense to me. If you get a little creative with the arrangment, it can play both. It gets harder to play, sure, but i feel like you should at the very least mention, that you can play more stuff with your right hand than just a single melodie. Especially if you wanna include pianists on all skill levels like you mentioned at the end. And if you get really crazy the melody can even be played by the left hand 🤯😂 But seriously that can open up so many arranging possibilities! I did that for never enough from greatest showman and it works incredibly well if the left hand plays the melody in a middle octave and the right hand is sparkling the piano part on top in a higher octave!
This channel is meant to dive much deeper into the specifics of the piano and actually playing it. My main channel is more of a surface level overview of lots of different music, meant to help people discover new things and learn a bit about theory! Think of it like this- My main channel is "check out this insanely cool music! Here's a bit about why it's so neat" and this channel is "Here's how to play it on the piano!" You'd be amazed at how different those two audience groups actually are!

Kind of! It's a place where I can dive much deeper into the specifics of actually PLAYING the piano. I can't really do that on the main channel as much because most people there aren't really trying to learn piano, but they just love music. The idea behind Better Piano is that it's for aspiring piano players!

Kind of confusing to see the exact same rhythm transcribed using both triplet and non-triplet notation within a single measure. Maybe 12/8 would have been more natural for this piece?
Yeah, someone else mentioned 12/8 as well. Makes total sense to think of it like that. I personally don't really like reading 12/8, but I can absolutely see how it would be easier for a lot of people than trying to read triplets in odd places/layouts. I'll definitely consider what's easiest to read a lot more in the future!
The games may have fallen off big time, the regions get worse by the generation, but the music ALWAYS SLAPS (and the pokémon are always pretty good too)

@@Better-Piano Legend! The Room does have a fully original soundtrack, and that piano theme comes back a lot in the movie. The soundtrack CD exists too, and while you can't stream it, people have uploaded the songs to UA-cam

You know, I never even considered writing it in 12/8, but you absolutely could! I think it's partially because I never felt the tune in anything other than 4/4, just with a swung 8th note. Personally, I find 12/8 to be kind of wonky to write in and read, but that's just me. I'd prefer reading triplets in 4/4, but that definitely doesn't mean it's the "right" way or the only way!
Listening to this made me want to play BDSP and Arceus all over again 😂 I was 200+ hours in Arceus too!

Fun video, but oof you gotta watch your rhythm groupings in the notation (especially in such a syncopated piece). Some of your transcriptions in your "full score" is a tad off as well, which is kinda a shame :/
I feel like when it comes to arranging being a jazz pianist is holding you back a little. Of course it's very convenient if the right hand plays a single melody and the left hand plays the chords, but piano solos can be so much more! As a pianist who focused on solo piano pieces from movie and game soundtracks for the most part of my practice, it's totally normal to play two or even three different voices within a single hand. Restricting the right hand to only play either the piano part or the sax part just doesnt make sense to me. If you get a little creative with the arrangment, it can play both. It gets harder to play, sure, but i feel like you should at the very least mention, that you can play more stuff with your right hand than just a single melodie. Especially if you wanna include pianists on all skill levels like you mentioned at the end.
And if you get really crazy the melody can even be played by the left hand 🤯😂
But seriously that can open up so many arranging possibilities! I did that for never enough from greatest showman and it works incredibly well if the left hand plays the melody in a middle octave and the right hand is sparkling the piano part on top in a higher octave!

What’s different with this channel compared to the old one ?
This channel is meant to dive much deeper into the specifics of the piano and actually playing it. My main channel is more of a surface level overview of lots of different music, meant to help people discover new things and learn a bit about theory! Think of it like this- My main channel is "check out this insanely cool music! Here's a bit about why it's so neat" and this channel is "Here's how to play it on the piano!" You'd be amazed at how different those two audience groups actually are!

Kind of! It's a place where I can dive much deeper into the specifics of actually PLAYING the piano. I can't really do that on the main channel as much because most people there aren't really trying to learn piano, but they just love music. The idea behind Better Piano is that it's for aspiring piano players!

Yeah, someone else mentioned 12/8 as well. Makes total sense to think of it like that. I personally don't really like reading 12/8, but I can absolutely see how it would be easier for a lot of people than trying to read triplets in odd places/layouts. I'll definitely consider what's easiest to read a lot more in the future!

This generation of pokemon was my least favorite pokemon game, but my most favorite for pokemon music
The games may have fallen off big time, the regions get worse by the generation, but the music ALWAYS SLAPS (and the pokémon are always pretty good too)
