The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

What few realize is that this choreography took weeks of rehearsal to achieve this level of variety and precision. I´m glad this was taped for posterity. Laura Nyro´s music,Liza´s singing, plus these two marvelous dancers created a TV masterpiece.
It probably only took about a week at most to stage cuz that's all the budget would allow and these are professionals.
Christ, I never knew she was so good. I just can't look away from this. These Ed Sullivan clips are just out of this world. Can't believe they are just here for the taking at UA-cam. Thanks!!

Here is Lee Roy Reams (on the right) before he hit major Broadway stardom. Already at this time, he was considered a great dancer. Later he showed himself to be a great singer and fine actor and is still going strong.

Gosh, Liza's voice live even while dancing is incredible! I love that you can hear the jingle of their jewelry too. So authentic :D
She was lip synching as these segments were never performed live for taping...
@@ThomJaskula You are incorrect, these segments were ALWAYS performed live. that's why you hear the necklaces jangling, that's why you hear Liza breathe during the song, and that's why the volume of her voice fluctuates during the performance. The orchesta is live also, conducted by Ray Bloch.
Brock, pay attention to the reverb on her voice. The intro and the slower drunk verse is live, and the hyperactive high-energy dance sections of the song are lipped. Yes you can hear the necklaces and beads, that’s because the microphones were on during the entire performance.

There wasn't a lot of lip syncing going on with Ed Sullivan show, but it's easy to see that she is miming over pre-recorded track. Rather obvious In fact.

Isn’t that the job of a side dancer? I always thought they were meant to do the steps very exactly, very tight to help the star in the middle? The audience will always watch the star, so if the side dancers are very tight, as they are here, the routine has great boundaries. Maybe I m wrong. I think this was not long after Lee Roy Reams left Cincinnati. I am amazed he was already getting gigs like this. Hell of a dancer.
Wow, I've always been a Liza fan since I was young but I never saw this performance till now and am even more impressed by her talent.
This is beyond brilliant! Liza Minnelli is a superstar. What can't this woman do? Amazing.

Lee Roy Reams the white dancer, very early in his career but already known as the guy who could make the star look great. If she could dance, he kept up, if she was a weak dancer he made her look better with the crisp way he did the steps. A wonderful dancer singer choreographer and a generous kind man.

I was thinking just the opposite, great Laura Nyro song , also a great cover by the Fifth Dimension but Liza killed it, not in a good way JMHO
Laura Nyro wrote and recorded it, so it's forever her own. It was covered by many others. Liza's was not great.

Anytime I can hear (watch) a performer I like doing a Laura Nyro song, I enjoy it. I didn't know this existed until I heard an interview with Liza Minnelli where she mentioned it. Frank also did this song with the Fifth Dimension on a TV show.
Imagine Judy Garland singing a Laura Nyro song. I could hear her singing "I Never Meant to Hurt You" or "Billy's Blues" Both on Laura's first album which came out just a couple short years before Judy's passing. Oh, well...I'll just imagine it in my head.
Liza is simply the best just like her sister Lorna is and her Mom Judy was ! Liza Lorna are funny too so was Judy funny ! Loved all the songs Liza Judy and Lorna did !

Not Liza's finest moment, but fun anyway. GREAT Laura Nyro song; the 5the DIMENSION version is wonderful .
You know what? I've been getting into Laura's music in the past month and I didn't like it very much at all. I think this is the best realized "use" for that song--as a musical dance number. Singing it straight like Nyro didn't work, IMO. Liza is an amazing dancer--I had no idea! I would have loved to have seen her mother sing this one...
The oddball song is not in Liza's considerable wheelhouse, but the weird, literal, frantic choreography is the real problem here. Those dudes dance the heck out of it, though. That is a workout.

Lee Roy Rimes on the right was one of Fosse's dancers who appears in Sweet Charity. It has that Rhythm of Life vibe and some definite Fosse moves. Fosse also choreographed sequences for Gwen Verdon on Ed Sullivan show
Apparently these folks never heard the author of the song, Laura Nyro, sing it the way it was supposed to be sung.

Well, I like Liza, but I don’t think this is the right song for her. Of course, I’m biased because I’ve only heard Laura’s interpretation, but I still like Laura’s “glitz free” version.
Laura's version is kinda glitzy too. People often think of Laura as strictly an experimental flower child but there's a lot of Broadway influence in her work that often gets forgotten about.

Lee Roy Reams (Caucasian dancer on the right) has more energy and a lot more rhythm than the African-American dancer on the left! :-) Mr. Reams' dancing looks effortless.
Caucasian is equivalent to Negro.
Just remember: Someday, those Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj videos are going to look just as ridiculous.

Let's get real about something here, people. In this same year there was a huge roar of bigoted disapproval when Harry Belafonte and Petula Clark touched hands in a TV special. Here we have our Liza bumping and grinding and acting drunk with a black backup dancer. She could have chosen one of hundreds of white dancers. Liza either meant it as a statement or was so naively color blind that she saw nothing unusual about it. Whichever, I will say about her what Sally said about Maximillian in Cabaret: "Class!"

Great singing, dancing, and lip synching, except for the very first word. She mouths "Let's" and then you hear it. I love seeing these clips from The Ed Sullivan Show.

The incredibly gifted Laura Nyro composed and originally introduced this song on records. ! The 5th did a great job of covering her songs "Sweet Blindness", "Stone Soul Picnic" , "Wedding Bell Blues", and "Black Patch"and had big hits with them but these were all Laura Nyro compositions and sung and recorded by her on her solo LP's . She also composed and recorded "Hands Off The Man Flim Flam Man" and "Stoney End" "which Barbra Streisand covered and had big hits with. Give her a listen she was quite a talent in her own right and a huge influence on the music of the 60's and 70's . She was a genius singer/songwriter/ Poet and deserved very much her being inducted in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
You could glorify being drunk on the Ed Sullivan Show, but never mention getting high. That's White conservative culture at its best.
@Batman Shad It is well known that Jim Morrison was told not to use the word "higher" when he performed Light My Fire on the Ed Sullivan Show. However, Liza was not only allowed to sing about getting drunk but also to act drunk. Getting drunk, in other words, was humorous and preferable to getting high, according to Ed Sullivan. Now, what is the reason for that? What aspect of American culture approves drunkenness but fears and censors getting high? I assure you it wasn't rock n roll culture. It wasn't liberal culture. It wasn't black culture. What culture do you think it was?
@@Nonduality That always gets me about our society. You can just walk in anytime and buy a bottle of liquor or go to a bar and drink up all night and then get behind the wheel of a car or get into a fight with someone but buy marijuana? Oh, no!
Seems like a truly nice lady (in interviews and such) but, wow, what a pale, even anemic, imitation of her mother in every way. Not a shred of real magic. The voice is mediocre/abrasive and the dancing fairly graceless, void of charisma. I expect that, when her mother kicked the bucket, there was an overabundance of hope that the daughter could somehow serve as a continuation of (or placeholder for) that once-in-a-lifetime talent everyone remembered. Wishful thinking can spark a universe of delusion. Where she did come close to her mother, though, was as a comedienne. Her film career could have soared beyond the one movie if her handlers had positioned her as a comic actress. She was outstanding in Arrested Development, for example. Still, she tried hard-*really* hard-as a live entertainer and could admirably razzle-dazzle New York audiences. But then again, so could Elaine Stritch.
Ever see Liza With A Z? THAT was spectacular.
