Why T.rex Shouldn't Have Been Called T.rex

- The name Tyrannosaurus rex is absolutely iconic, evoking images of a powerful, ancient predator, the king of the tyrant lizards. But, if you go back and examine the earliest discoveries of this legendary animal, it turns out that this shouldn’t technically have been its name at all.

Changing the name of the T. Rex would lead to the downfall of civilization, or, might even open a Black Hole in The Smithsonian Museum ultimately destroying this entire area of the galaxy. One simply does not rename T. Rex without incurring serious penalties...
Meh. If the astronomers can demote Pluto to dwarf planet, the paleontologist can change the T. Rex name.
Changing it may actually reset our universe
@@Jossandoval
Yeah well they re-classified Pluto and now we have 2020. Let's not risk it.
“Not without major sequence gaps”
Your point is nothing but the Simple Truth. I note the heretics below who actually Welcome the end of the world, by messing with the "Sacred Designation" of T-Rex. I wish no harm on them, but Surely they are doomed... :(
'How fast are they?'
'Well we clocked the Manospondylus gigas at 32 miles per hour'
'...do you-.. M-gigas..you said you have a m.gigas?'
'say again?'
'... we have a Manospondylus gigas!'
Yeah it is not as catchy and pleasant to hear
I legit thought it was a typo of Massospondylus

Just proves that zoology and palaeontology aren't immune from the age old argument of "but it's just so much cooler!"
Namacub95 Rule of c00l
Namacub95 also tyrannosaurus is likely inaccurate it was never a lizard.

Namacub95 well calling it ostrich mimic would be dumb
I vote we rename it "Giant Murder Pigeon"
Basilosaurus: “Hey, what about me? I’ma whale, goddammit!”

Errrrr...... Basilocetus?
Don't worry, I call it Zeuglodon sometimes...
At least give the older name to another recently discovered dinosaur that has no name yet. It still sounds awesome!
honestly, if I ever decide to design a fantasy creature that's supposed to be a dinosaur, I'm taking inspiration from
T-Rex alter names (Dynamosaurus Gigas has a nice ring to it, right?)
Maybe in a parallel universe, we call it M. Gigas.I'm imagining John Hammond saying it now.
'We clocked the M.gigas at 32 miles an hour...' :D
"Manospondylus gigas. Giant hollow bones. They ruled for 25 million years..." Yep that didn't work. Not even Richard Attenborough's voice could sell it.
y-you have a m.gigas....??
John hammond: Yes!!!!
*Tips fedora* "M'gigas"
"They're approaching the Manospondylus paddock".
Sounds a bit right...
I'm saving Tyrannosaurus Max for something really big....

It's awesome to know that the "rule of cool" also applies to paleontology.
T-Rex is most iconic dinosaur so they're not changing it any time.
It would seem so. I imagine a lot of people would be upset if they did.
Well they made a new rule JUST so T.Rex could actually keep the name as valid lmao.
T.Rex means the Tyrant Lizard King if they change it it's name should be the Tyrant Bird King

It's indeed a popular dinosaur but what's wrong with that?

To be honest I feel like these two left over names for T Rex should be saved for maybe two new dinosaurs in the future that's just my opinon?
If they're not in use by any other species then they could very well be used in the future I think. Dynamosaurus just sounds too cool to waste.
Doesn't work that way. Once a zoological nomen has been established in scientific literature for a particular type specimen, it may never be recycled even if subsequently invalidated.
Dynamosaurus sounds like a very cool name?
Hmm okay then thanks for the information?

It is greek like almost every dinosaur name even the word dinosaur
Well, back then they couldn't have imagined that there would be 5 bigger ones.
jurassic wanderer
Preety sure there are larger carnuvaorus dinosaurs than T Rex
Even when the bigger ones lived during the same area and in the same environment they were no match for the T. rex. The tyrannosaurus had a far more stronger bite force, stereoscopic eye sight and was more intelligent.
Bigger doesn't necessarily mean a predator is more powerful.
But we are only talking about size not who's stronger in a fight
Sergio Omar Solorzano Lariz We aren't indeed,...but 3 on that list will definitely kill T-Rex in a fight. And another one works in packs, so T-Rex wouldn't win that fight either.
#keepingItReal
jurassic wanderer 😧 you poor thing,....if it makes you feel any better, T-Rex was my favourite toy too.
Informative video and interesting to those of us that are dinosaur lovers. The photos emphasize T. Rex's forward facing birdlike eyes. This animal was a predator through and through regardless of Horner's claims that it was only a scavenger, although I have no doubt it scavenged too.
Yes Horner's ideas are interesting, to put it politely. Perhaps that could be a topic for a future video, examining his scavenger claims and looking at the evidence against it. Anyway glad to hear you liked the video :)
T.Rex also had very acute hearing. Why? It is unnecessary in a scavenger I would think, but it would be a considerable advantage for a predator such as T. Rex. Finally, most pure scavengers are quite small in modern times, I suspect the same would apply during the Jurassic as well. I would really enjoy a video examining Horner's claims. Thanks again for this video!
t Rex altough it had a 16.000 ton bite force was very slow running only 18 mph at max it has good smell and powerful eagle like eyes it would make sense it scavenged my Option theory is it was a scavenging ambush predator.
there is a theory saying the dinosaur was social but the only bones found next to a fully grown female Rex were juveniles there are adult bones too but its mostly a fully grown female Rex and 5 juveniles so in my theory the t Rex was a social and solitary animal.
@ Wolf, I don't disagree but the prey it hunted wouldn't have been particularly fast either, although faster than themselves in many instances. Lions and tigers hunt from ambush and often their prey exceeds their own top speed capability.
Thanks for this video! Love learning about the interesting history of T. rex's name. I'm glad they let T. rex remain instead of M. gigas.
Thanks for watching! And yeah T.rex just sounds better really, plus it's so iconic by now.
@@BenGThomas God knows why, it's an abbreviation, not a name, and it brings to mind that silly old 70s glam group and the laziness of human speech every time it's used. I'd resurrect that M-gigas name just to reverse the trend of always annoying me to annoy everyone else. Iconic, he's not even the biggest predator dino ever anyway.
now someone just needs to name a related species Manospondylus Gigas.
quite problematic since the whole family of closely related animals is now called Tyrannosaurids.
Dynamosaurus did inspire the name for a newely discovered Tyrannosaurid, Dynamoterror dynastes. Some believe it to be dubious, but a museum recently featured it with a model in an exhibit, so they must be pretty confident it existed.
I'll just go ahead and keep calling him Tyrannosaurus Rex. If you don't mind.
Well that is the correct name now, as I said in the video.
It also shouldn't been called "Tyrannosaurus rex" no species Genus only. only real name for the dinosaur us "Tyrannosaurus"

Ben G Thomas, It also shouldn't been called "Tyrannosaurus rex" no species Genus only. only real name for the dinosaur us "Tyrannosaurus"

Just found your channel and have been watching everything. Great job at being entertaining and informative!

I really love this channel. You guys may be young, but you both always are very well researched and provide very interesting videos on things such as this name change which I would never have known about or even considered. Keep up the good work.
Without having seen most of the video yet, I will say that I always thought of the T-Rex as a giant chicken with teeth.
I have also noticed that angry chickens are not nice to be around, either.
As I have typed the comment, the video has played through. I, as most people, had no idea that the giant toothy chicken had an earlier name. That's interesting.
Thanks.
No problem, thanks for watching :) A giant toothy chicken would certainly be quite terrifying to see lol
The chickenosaurus is coming to a lab near you. :)

Get a joke.
Another great vid. Again love the images you use.
Thanks so much :)
Manospondylus and Dynamosaurus may have been great names, but both the popularity and the fact that both names have been rendered as Nomen oblitum (forgotten names) insured that Tyrannosaurus rex remained the name for the largest known coelurosaur. It also is the most catchy name and instills a sense of recognition.
Yes if you dump the pointless Rex bit. It's not like the 'signature addition' gets added on to any OTHER dinosaur every time it gets mentioned.
Newly discovered this lovely channel; subbed.
Thanks so much! :)

Wow, some of those illustrations are just magnificent!
Love the music. It's from the L'howon & Volunteers project to bring atmospheric music to Bungie's "Marathon 2" game, which did not come with a music track but instead focused on ambient and environmental sounds (which added to the audio realism of the planet L'howon).
Also love your videos.
Thanks for an enjoyable and informative video on T. Rex's naming history.
Well... he did have the most powerful bite, and also he was covered in scales... along with some feathers... but we have evidence that is was more scaly than others... it technically is the “tyrant king lizard”
I did not know that before today. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting info on the ICZN
They would not dare rename him look what happened when the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto. Some people have never forgiven them. T. Rex must be one of the first dinosaurs that a child recognises loves and goes to sleep in bed at night with.
Exactly, there would have been riots probably lol
Robert Fletcher, YES! And I am one of them and Pluto will forever be a planet in my world because I MAKE THE RULES.
BTW, What happened to kids? Don't they have uncles that tell them stories to scare the crap out of them anymore? I'd NEVER fall asleep with a T-Rex for fear it would come to life and eat me in my sleep! :)
Kids have collections of dinosaur toys they play with and cuddle them. Dinosaurs biggest friends is young children. Go to a museum and see how exited they get.
Robert Fletcher, I was just kidding although when I was a kid (60s-70s) that's what happened :) My nephews knew the names of most of them before they hit kindergarten.
John Di Francisco If you classify Pluto as a 'planet' then you must also consider Eris, Makemake, Haumea and Ceres planets aswell along with many other large rocks that exist within our solar system.
This would still throw out the '9th planet' idea that I'm sure you and many others (including myself) are used to.
All of the previously mentioned 'planets' are dwarf planets, that is why the classification exists.
Maybe I'm in the wrong here, but why should the other two names take precedent over T. rex when the people who came up with them didn't even know what they discovered. I mean shouldn't the name wait until you have more to go on than fragmented remains.
Very interesting video. I'm always excited to find something I haven't already heard or read in dino-related science or news. But, could you please site the artists you used so their names can be recognized. There is some beautiful paleoart supporting your talk.
Man, those T. rex restorations are so cool!
My mom named the dinosaur when she first saw it she called it "Featherfuck" 😂

The most significant thing I learned from this video is the Henry Fairfield Osborn was really good at coming up with awesome Dinosaur names.
Another great video!
Thank you! :D
You know, if my sources are correct, the exact same thing happened to another really famous dinosaur- Allosaurus. It was originally named Antrodremus, but Allosaurus was made the official name, even though Antrodemus should have taken priority since it was first.
'So according to naming rules, T Rex should be called something else.'
'Well, I guess it's time to change the rules, then.'
They kinda already did, 3:36
More recent name to consider: "Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear". But T-Rex is still catchier.
M. Gigas sounds way more Ominous than T. Rex, like the final boss of a JRPG where you are a kid with a Yo-yo
Manospondylus Gigas is too inaccurate name because it sounded like cough syrup
I always enjoy your videos. I’m someone who finds categorising animals alive and extinct a very important part of understanding them and don’t mind being corrected if I’m wrong. But find it proper annoying when for example a dolphin is called a fish or gorilla a monkey I think I’m a bit retarded or something because I quite literally go into meltdown😂✌️
Haha, that would annoy me too to be honest.
Sounds cool as for me I'm gonna go ride my Flipper fish dolphin over to my monkey friend Mighty Joe Youngs and play some Donkey Kong.
Dolphin is a fish also called Mahi Mahi or Dorado Theres also Pompano Dolphin. which are fish too.
When we here in South Florida eat dolphin, we're talking about a fish...what others call Dorado or Mahi...not the cetacean.
Those pictures with the T.Rex with Feathers... I just wanna see them flap their tiny wings in excitement now xD
It gets even worse with some species of dinosaurs.
You are a Megalosaurus, You are a Meglosaurus, and You are a Megalosaurus. EVERYONE IS A MEGALOSAURUS!
Glad we do not have that going on anymore.
It may not be the biggest or the most powerful... but you know what? Its the most famous and THE coolest thats why this dinosaur deserves the crown as KING of the dinosaurs 🦖 👑
To be fair, with the discovery of Scotty it is besides maybe the Spinosaurus and the Giganotosaurus and such, probably the biggest theropod carnivore dino there was.
as for findings about the build and power of it, it seems that in a 1vs1 against any of those dinosaurs of comparable size, the Tyrannosaurus, though it probably would get hurt badly, likely could wreck all of those other big theropods because of superior agility and far superior bite force.
Though new findings can change things any day, for now, it actually STILL deserves it's title, not even in its family, but even among other dinosaurs.
so, if we discovered something new is M. Gigas available for use now?
I had actually just read that there were earlier names for specimens of Tyrannosaurus a few days ago, and then you uploaded this. So this was super convenient in explaining it. I guess this is also why we don't call Triceratops "Agathaumas", right?
Very cool video! I never knew that the original scientific name of T. rex was not T. rex at all! 😯
I'm glad "T. rex" stuck. "Tyrant Lizard King" was a bold-ass claim to make and it keeps miraculously being proven more and more true.

So nice to ear from you, Sir.
I am a senior cityzen, and I love Paleontology, and, of course, I am a firm believer of Darwin, the logic of evolution, and of the Panspermia.
Thats why, I also like the ones like Stephen Hawking, (R.I.P.)., and Jack Horner.
BTW, have you read my comment about dino feathers??
Would like to know your opinion on my comment.!
A.Rodrigues.
Yes I think I saw the comment. The issue of feathers in Tyrannosaurs is a very interesting one, and definitely something I'd like to cover at some point on the channel. There have been some recent studies that have added quite a bit to the debate, and it now seems fairly likely that T.rex wasn't entirely covered with feathers, and was mostly 'scaly', but had some form of feathery integument along its back/neck. The point you made about feathers for thermal insulation is true, they are very effective at trapping in body heat, and I think that's one of the arguments for why T.rex was only lightly feathered, as it was so big that feathers would have made it overheat. There's a really great blog post by paleoartist Mark Witton that sums this all up very well if you're interested: markwitton-com.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/revenge-of-scaly-tyrannosaurus.html?m=1
Manospondylus gigas ftw!
T rex sounds much better than all these names
That red-faced T-Rex is the coolest thing I've seen all week.
Please do a video on the confusing taxonomy of wolves and their evolution
I will add it to our list of video ideas, hopefully we can do it at some point though I can't promise it will be soon. Great suggestion though!
TL;DR:

+ "YeS, but iT ShOuLd acTuAlLy Be M.giGaS BECAUsE I namED It FiRsT."
Ah, the infamous Art. 23.9. (Reversal of precedence). It can be very inconvenient to change a name that everybody uses in favor of an older name that has been just discovered to be the same species. It is an important relaxation of the Principle of Priority... Nice video.

In sports terms, T.rex was inducted into the Hall of Fame and had its number retired.
WOW!!! I never knew this. Thanks for informing us all on the lost name of T-Rex. I am glad tho that T-Rex is still the official name since its an awesome name
Didn't know about this at all! Good video boys.
Thank you! :D
When that find a new trex, the dynamosaurus name should go to it.
Scientists: name lizards ‘saurus’
Also scientists: name birds ‘dinosaur’
Birds: excuse me? :(
I could be wrong, but I thought he called them 'Terrible' in the sense that they are terrifying? I think that's how people talked back then adunno xD I guess if we'd name them today we'd call them 'Scary Birds' but like in Greek or sumthn.
the dinosaurs got their name people thought they were basically big lizards, and now we're stuck with it.
Procheneosaurus gets shafted for Lambeosaurus and no one bats an eye. Manospondylus replaces Tyrannosaurus and everyone loses their MINDS!
I'm just picturing some kid who likes T. rex blowing raspberries at another kid who wanted Brontosaurus to stay a valid genus name. It'd be nice if that name were validated, considering what shenanigans led to its being made invalid.
In the whole vid i was like idc it’s gonna be T. Rex
When I look at a T-rex Drawing depicting the animal is all its glory I can not help but feel inspired by it.
Its a beautiful powerful creature that is to be admired.
I must admit that My obsession with it as a child never ended.
The rule of cool always wins. Good video.
Ah the rule of cool in action!
Ok I understand they didnt know a whole bunch about dinosaurs back then but they thought T REX BONES belonged to a giant ornithomimid dinosaur. What??!! xD
To be fair to them the remains were probably very fragmentary, and I don't think any of them could have imagined something as unique as T.rex to have existed at that point. But yeah it seems quite obvious to us now.
There is Deinocheirus, the ornithomimosaur that was around the size of a tyrannosaur.
To be fair, considering the phylogeny of T rex and tyrannosaurids, it wouldn't be too surprising.
Sounds like they changed the rules *specifically* to be able to preserve the T.Rex name.
Dynamosaurus would’ve been an even more popular name since it sounds like the word dinosaur
I have no idea what he's talking about. If you asked me "which sounds cooler? T. Rex or M. Gigas" my answer would be the latter
Good history of the Tyrannosaurus
Thanks :)
Anyone want to sign my petition to change T-Rex's name to "Big ol' Chicken"?
Should've named it Gigantogallimegadon
Giant chicken huge teeth
Ok but how tall is that freaking grass in that drawing? It’s up to Rex’s shoulders lol
To be honest, M. Gigas totally sounds like a dinosaur name
So t-rex should be called orthinmimus? I'm still gonna call t-rex those names. XD
The original names were given based on very fragmentary fossil evidence. It wasn't named until more complete evidence was uncovered, so to me, it's entirely proper that the T-Rex name should still stand.
Every child and their grandma knows the name T-rex. Nobody is ever going to change it, and it would be a very ridiculous act
I watched this after reading up Michael Crichton's Dragon Teeth and I was like "Professor Marsh, is that you?"
Dynamosaurus Imperiosus, is pretty cool sounding too, I must say. ( though Imperiosus ' sounds straight out of Harry Potter )
What do you mean? M. Gigas sounds epic. Trex sounds weak, which it is. Boi
Imagine if they just made an exception for T-rex "the first name takes priority when to comes to naming of species...except Tyranasaurus Rex, because it's cool"
how come we didn't use the original name?
"The newer name sounded cooler!"
first one who ever goes to the trouble of renaming the tyrannosaurids and the T. Rex has a good chance to be the most hated person of all time in paleontology.
Should've been called The Death Megatron 9000
Or: An Animal That Was Not A Movie Monster, But Rather, An Animal Much Like The Birds Of Prey Of Today, Or Big Cats
Isn't that much better, eh?
TheRublixCube no mine is the best
My hope for T.Rex name change it will be, “Godzillasaurus Rex”
The Manospondylus material is not enough to be considered diagnostic. Thus, the name never received serious consideration as having priority over T. Rex.
Is it just me, or does Manospondylus gigas sound just more powerful and T. rex? T. rex sounds like a movie monster, while Manospondylus sounds more like... ironically, a king :D
I live in Golden Colorado
That's so cool! From what I saw from the images on google it looks like a really interesting place :) Look out for T.rex fossils!
Do you have a dinosaur?
I suggest we rename T-Rex as 'Hello-Kitty'....
The idea that the public should put up with a name change just so some person can get credit is just dumb.
