  • Many times coaches are afraid to be vocal because they don't want the players to think they are yelling. There is a difference between yelling and being passionately assertive with your teaching style.
Coaches, you have to remember that baseball and softball are games of failure. Kids are going to make errors, they are going to make mistakes and they will never be perfect! There is a difference between physical and mental mistakes and we need to address them in different ways. Players don't want to make mistakes and in most times are putting pressure on themselves either way. Our job is to pump them up with the confidence to flush it and move on to the next play!
Just as Coach Duke mentions, there is a difference between being a vocal coach and being someone who yells and screams from the dugout every time something goes wrong. Some players can handle a coach that yells and screams and others fold under pressure. We must understand the individuals on our team and address issues in different ways.

Yup parents are always the difficult part. The kids blossoming makes it all worth it. Great discussion

I'm finding that studying each of the kids is extremely important and beneficial. They all learn differently and respond differently to certain styles of communication.

I agree. Always wait until the inning is over to coach them up.
