- Australia's new asylum policy is stirring heated debate before next month's general election.
Asylum seekers arriving by boat to the immigration detention centre on Christmas Island are now being deported to Papua New Guinea or the island of Nauru.

This is so typical of Al-Jazeera to label those arriving illegally as immigrants! Complete disrespect to those who arrive in Australia after obtaining a valid visa thus respecting Aussie laws!

We can blame those migrants who abused Australia's generosity! They come here, Australians gave them a decent life to live but some of them either became radicals gang members and would never even assimilate with the Australian culture! Sad, it's really sad. If they have that much $, why didn't they come to the country properly? Why couldn't they spend the money to obtain visa legally rather than paying smugglers? They all deserve to be sent back. We agree with several comments acknowledging this policy. While drastic for some, it is necessary to save lives at sea, prevent illegal arrivals, and further weaken smuggling networks. We must understand the difference between illegal migrants (situation in which these people arrive by decision) and refugees (condition of protection granted after studying the evidence and complaints of persecution), and we doubt that a TV channel has the power to qualify them. However, the government must improve the humanitarian conditions of some centers, something minimal to ensure a safe and adequate wait until deportation.
Transfer them to a refugee camp closer to their homes. One of the camps that is being supported by the Australian taxpayer.
