I tried watching this a few months ago and was SO distracted from all the "Um" and "Ah", I just couldn't continue. I'm glad I came back today and tried again. After you seemed to relax, there were fewer "Um" uses (or, I just got used to it). This original was so many years ago, I'm sure you realized it and have long since changed the "Um" use. This was a great presentation. I love the detail and graphics. This subject is so interesting. When I was a kid, I remember we were told in school the lake was bottomless and there were reports of divers able to come out into Pyramid from there. LoL I'm not sure but I think it was even in "Weekly Reader".
I'm surprised you must not have been trained or taught in a university or gone on field trips with experts. Too bad you'll miss out on lots of wonderful informative talks worrying about ums etc as people gather their thoughts on the topic and next tnoughy
Yes, mannerisms can be distracting, but attention discipline at college level bypasses such issues. Many of the best researchers are not the best speakers. If presentation is the primary interest, life in general may be disappointing. Learning is from the viewer's side of the educational experience. Learning to evaluate the quality of teaching on the basis of substance is a key to learning. Assessing incoming information and its sources is key to the quality of learning. If personal learning filters are set at presentation quirks, the learning quality suffers immensely.
Agreed.. I worked in science and the presenters are not trained speakers but actual research scientists. Use your mind to learn the information the person is presenting and think about the information and ask questions about details or conclusions etc
I watch Nick also but worked in science and had to do talks sometimes. Absolutely no training on giving talks is given to practicing scientists they're taking classes on how to do the science and analys data etc not how to entertain. Some people like Nick come by the talent of speaking naturally
This teacher needs to LEARN how to teach. He jumps chapters and cant finish a complete sentence about whatever fact he is trying to convey in his MONOTONE voice.
Thanks for an excellent and informative talk.

He knows how to teach his talk is packed with good information. Perhaps you need to learn how to learn, think, and listen. Try taking notes .
