If you go to PONGURU’s UA-cam channel he’s got a series off videos called ‘pimp my filter’ it shows the proper setup mostly for canister filters, but there are some HOB filters, always good for a check, good luck. 👍

The skimmer feature is great if you're using gravel. However, if you have sand, a single grain will stop the filter from running and you have to pull the pump off to remove it. If you get one with a skimmer, I would place foam filter at the intake to prevent this.

I ran 2 seachem tidal 110s on my 55g and they were the best filters I've ever had. They're so simple to use, self-priming, tons of room for biomedia and filter floss and super quite. The surface skimmer imo isn't needed, but for some set-ups it might be practical

Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear they work for you. The skimmer is great for saltwater tanks. It’s like an updated version of an aquaclear to me

@junito1957 I completely agree. Some people say the self priming feature isn't a big deal, but my power has gone out several times when I wasn't home, but it started back up on it's own.

I have 2 Tidels. The skimmer is a pia. Sucks up food as does the slots in the motor cover. I had to block those to allow the water to flow like a aqua clear.

Thank you for your feedback. It’s good to hear others experience. Personally I wish OASE’s new HOB would do better but it having some early product issues. Hopefully they figure it out.

Most of these filters are great options, but there is one which I'd warn against getting. I tried out the Oase Biostyle a few months back thinking it would be a good choice since I had experience with their canister filters, all of which had performed well for me. Their hang on back did not follow suit though. I three in a row die within a week. Two of the three bit the dust because of faulty heaters, and the third had a motor which failed only a few days into service. The two with the failed heaters left me with a huge mess to clean up since they melted right through the plastic outter housing which caused water to spew forth onto my floor and furniture, and which introduced some sort of tiny beads of material into the aquarium, necessitating a complete change of the substrate. That gets expensive when you're using a layer of ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia. Fortunately, there weren't any fish in the tank when the filters failed, as in all three cases, the tank was still cycling. It's a really serious indictment of the model that it can't even get past the cycling phase. I also note that there were quite a few reviews on Amazon over time where people had had the same problem. I know that they will never read this, but if somehow they did come across this, I would recommend to them that they look into the supplier of those heaters. They shouldn't be failing that often. If you have that number of fails (other peoples experiences included) in a particular part, something is wrong. Since most budding aquarists start out small, having their first experience with Oase be a bad one could be a problem overall, which would not be a good thing for sales of their overall very good canisters when hobbyists move up to bigger aquariums with more robust filtering needs.
To sum up, I recommend that people not buy the Oase Biostyle unless Oase have managed to sort out the issues with the heaters and motors. How you can know if they have or haven't is a whole other issue. Better safe then sorry. Say away unless there's something on the box that says "new and improved" or something like that, and even then, remember that you might be returning it. Perhaps it would be better to try some of the other offerings here. Even though its a lot more than I need for the size of tan I'm running, I ended up going with a small canister, figuring that I'll eventually get a larger tank eventually where the power is not wasted. I am unable to say with any experience to bac it up which of the other filters mentioned in this article are best, but there are a lot of well respected names in the list, and I'm sure there are some very good picks there.
Best of luck to all of you in your fish keeping adventures! It's a great hobby to be involved in.

Thank you for your feedback. First generations are always going to have major issues. I remember the Cobalt heaters having major issues when they came out. It’s low on the most because the feature seem awesome but it is a very new product. Hopefully they figure it out as it has a lot of potential. Their canister and internal filters are pretty solid.

Help! I've been buying Aqua Tech for over 40 years. When the impeller goes out, I just order another and they run forever. Almost. That can't be done anymore. Now they have power filters with the impeller out side of the tank. I have 2 and they are always having problems. They lose suction or they impellers get full of dirt and I have to take it apart. I don't care about carbon filtration. I can just do a water change. My 110 gallon tank is deep ans I need to attach extensions. I have plenty I bought over the years and they are black. Do you have a power filter in mind that might fill my simple needs? I want 2 on my 110 and 2 on my 125 gallon.

Hello, I never see Aqua-Tech Power Aquarium 3-Step filter on any of these lists. I saw one that is for 30-60 gallons of water at Walmart for $43 bucks. Are these just not good filters? If anyone knows anything about them, please let me know. Happy fish keeping, everyone.
