- Reflection on Mark 13:24-32 - Hope in the Promise of Christ
In this week’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to His disciples about the end times in vivid and dramatic imagery: the sun darkened, the moon failing to shine, and the stars falling from the sky. These are unsettling words, but they are also filled with hope. At the heart of this message is the promise that, amidst tribulation, "the Son of Man will come in the clouds with great power and glory" to gather His elect. It is a reminder that Christ is Lord of history and that His words are eternal, even when the heavens and earth pass away.
As we gather during November, the month dedicated to remembering and praying for the Souls in Purgatory, this Gospel resonates deeply. The imagery of darkness and tribulation reflects the purifying journey of the souls in purgatory. They, too, are being prepared to meet Christ in His glory. Their time of purification is not one of despair but one of hope-a hope rooted in the certainty that Christ will gather them to Himself when the time is fulfilled.
Jesus also speaks of the fig tree as a lesson for us. Just as we recognise the signs of summer in its tender branches, so too are we called to see the signs of God’s work in our lives and in the lives of those in purgatory. November reminds us that our prayers and sacrifices are part of these "signs." Through them, we participate in God’s work of mercy, helping to hasten the souls’ journey to the fullness of His light.
The Gospel also calls us to readiness. While we do not know the day or hour of Christ’s return, we are assured of His promise: "My words will not pass away." This is an invitation to trust in God’s eternal faithfulness. It is also a reminder to live each day with an eternal perspective. Our prayers for the Souls in Purgatory, and our own lives of faith, are a response to this promise, preparing both ourselves and others for the day when we will see the Son of Man face to face.
As we reflect on this Gospel, let us find strength and encouragement in Jesus’s words. May we be men of prayer, hope, and faith, confident in His promises and committed to supporting the souls in purgatory with our intercession. In this way, we honour Christ’s call to be watchful and ready, not in fear, but in joyful anticipation of His coming in glory.
Let us continue to pray that all souls, including our own, may one day share in the eternal light of His Kingdom.
Amen
