So, y’all are the experts! A toxic work environment has me looking at neighboring states. Any suggestions regarding areas that have a bit larger population and are safe/less expensive? All suggestions are appreciated.

I like Kentucky but subrbs are hell for me. I live in a walkable german neighborhood where everything I need is in 15 minutes maximum walking distance. I love public transportation because it's a nobrainer. I hate carcentric places, I don't want to waste my money on a car. For me it's countryside or a walkable neighborhood in the city.
You bring up a good point. I suspect that many suburbs, especially the closer in ones, will have to start taking on more "urban " characteristics such as better public transportation, medium rise (maybe even a few higher rise ) buildings, in-fill and eliminate the massive land waste called parking lots, and more walkable and biking alternatives are implemented. The massive sprawl that is conventional suburbia is not sustainable from an environmental perspective, an infrastructure maintenance perspective, a public health perspective, and a host of other reasons. Travel to states like California, Texas, and Florida and you can see how this will play out over the next 20-50 years. Retrofitting the 'burbs is do-able and I'm sure a few people will squawk at the prospect, but it's going to be increasingly clear that 'burbs, in their current form, cost more than they deliver on investment.
@@gregorysouthworth783 Then Kentucky can aspire to have the homelessness and crime that states like California have, too. If we've learned anything over the past few decades, it's that large urban areas are cesspools. Any area trying to be more urban, is simply inviting all of the problems that come with it. In order to do it right, you have to have people in charge who aren't corrupt. Good luck with that. The urban utopia is a fantasy.
