why do you divide the second difference by 2 to find a, if I had a cubic what would I divide the third difference by?

@JHawk24: Look at the sequence of square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25...what is the common second difference? For cubics, look at 1, 8, 27, 64, 125,... and what is the third difference?

Look at the simplest quadratic sequence: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25,... Work out the first differences, then what do you get for all the second differences?
