It was such a genius idea to represent the cruelty of a war in a fashion show. People enjoying and applauding represented such a strong metaphorical message. It's a pity that she withdrew the official video in favour of a bland one. She received backlash for it at the time and since then she was infamously boycotted by American radio stations. I think that after 18 years she can definitely substitute the other video with this one on her channel.
I think they even sued her for exposing the State-americans, and I think she can't upload this video again, it's not that she doesn't want to, she can't, otherwise she would have done it a long time ago.

I'm Italian and in 2003 in Italy we didn't understand why usa censored this great Madonna video. She told something important. She wanted to show the horror of the war to a lazy and silly society. Usa was afraid of this music video because she was right. After some weeks, when in Italy was released "Hollywood", italian fans started to understand that somebody was trying to close the mouth of Madonna. In my country all the hit singles taken from American Life were underrate by radios and MTV. That album was great, intelligent and very profound.

Wow, this is the first time I've seen this version. I understand why Madonna decided to release the watered down version due to the sensitivity of the invasion in Iraq that was just beginning.
