It’s the worst it’s ever been since the government didn’t allow farmers to do controlled burning earlier this year. People said that after a few days government help didn’t show up at homes so the people banded together and began fighting back the wildfires near the big cities, towns and farms. ❤️ We the people have the power in our hands. Don’t ever forget that we are many and governments are few that have attempted control.
I remember eating at that Chinese restaurant on my way to Gang Ranch. It was right by the Fraser canyon! I really liked that small town. Really wanted to go back there to explore the area. Last time I drove by was in late July 2021, and nothing was left. 😢

As someone who lives in BC, this incredible story about a community wiped out by wildfire is very impactful. I'm beyond thankful of where I live and the amount of fields, rivers and valleys surrounding our city. It's also incredible to see how our community pulled together for not just one but two massive evacuations this year (Donnie Creek fire, north of Fort St. John and the West Kiskatinaw fire near Tumbler Ridge) Dawson Creek really made sure these evacuees were taken care of, my place of employment even made sure that all evacuee's got a discount on all purchases and donated many essential items to our evacuation center
We had a fire just a month ago from a freight train. Lit up about 15 spots for a mile or so of track. I was there. Saw it happen. One hot and windy day. Could have taken our village out but we managed to get it put out after about 40 minutes.

Train malfunctions can and do cause fires and on some of the larger/longer trains, the drivers are unlikely to notice. Would a railway company admit to causing a fire, after the fact?
I live in Lillooet, BC. (about 64km’s from Lytton). The lack of progress with regard to rebuilding Lytton is astounding. Yes, there are steps, a process, but government inaction has been irresponsible and cruel. I hope residents will have homes in Lytton soon…💔
Lytton was a sanctuary for me during the Vietnam War. I lived across the river on First Nation land where I was given a small cabin and helped to harvest apples. The people there took me in and treated me like a part of the community. I will never forget their kindness. It breaks my heart this has happened to that lovely town.

There was a freight car of lumber on a train that was on fire several miles south of town just after this fire started so it's obvious that this fire was started by that train.
Yes the train started it. Because of the heat and fire danger. The town went up like a match BECAUSE of the record temperatures. Everything was so dry. So yes the train was the cause, but the climate is the reason it burnt to the ground.
I doubt Lytton will ever be built back. My opinion, the government won’t invest in infrastructure that is subject to environmental collapse, save for certain highways and bridges. However, if they admit there is a problem, then they have to be responsible for coming up with solutions. The First Nations in the area have always known where Lytton was built was in a wind tunnel in the valley, which were perfect conditions for that fire from the heat dome. I would also argue that the west in general, regardless of being in Canada or the States, is pretty much on their own. Only one summer of forest fire smoke hitting Ottawa and now New York, and finally the federal governments are calling a crisis, springing to action? It’s been near a decade of orange skies and carcinogenic air out west ever summer. Take the situation of Lytton as a warning for the future.
Unfortunately this is at least the third time the community has been burned down. The picture that got me, was the camera on the Environment Canada weather station, it showed two shots of the smoke approaching, when the third one was due, nothing, the building was gone. I had been going by that building in the summers, since the early 80's.
Lytton was always subject to high temperatures; I believe it reached 112 degrees fahrenheit in about 1941. However the temperature reached in 2021 was the hottest ever recorded 49.6 C (121.3 F).
That's right. In some areas of the interior of BC, you can say there are arid, almost desert like conditions. I've never been there but l no you can certainly find cacti there you'd expect to see in a desert!

Actually there is video proof the fire was started by a train, saw the video myself. Nothing to do with temperature, two years later taxpayers are still waiting for the help they were promised.

we were there a week before it happened and even then it was 37c while having lunch at the cafe no longer there. due the the 1940's & 50's construction a lot of asbestos, lead and other materials now a health hazards has to be cleaned up before leveling and construction starts. it will be a while.
It won’t happen anytime soon. Our federal government is beyond corrupted under Trudeau and he’s taken all the money for wildfire control and provincial rebuilds during natural disasters and have sent it to Ukraine. Our federal government turned its back on the Provincial Governments and all we British Columbian’s want is to go home to OUR TOWNS AND CITIES! We are not going to move to another town! I’ve just spent too much time this evening watching gripping stories of war, foolish political choices and natural disasters and the effects on people. There is too much that pains me and I need a break. Please, people, before we lose everything, be kind to each other. We’re all we have.
I lived in the Canyon not far from Lytton for 15 yrs, I worked with first nations and heard many stories, including those of great fires. The region is hot and dry for geologic and geographic reasons, always has been. We silly humans have only been keeping climate data records for 150 years, that coincides with the termination of the lowest temperature period on earth in the past 10,000 yrs- this is indisputable fact. Civilization is not much older than 10,000 yrs. Our entire global civilization emerged and developed in this period. Unfortunately, we built in all the wrong places in terms of sustainability in the face of inevitable climate change. We are doomed because of our ignorance and our hubris; we will not alter climate change no matter what we do- the earth is in control, not us and failure to acknowledge this simple truth will be our extinction. We move and adapt or we perish.
Every one of us belongs in a community.Where ever we live,we need to support OUR community AND others when they are in need .They should get together and rebuild that village !Construction and building companies as well as the B/C government need to get together and DO this .Heartbreaking ❤❤❤

Yes I would like to know how much is arson how much is campfires tossed cigarettes etc. too but regardless the provincial response is not adequate they often just shrug and blame climate change though they know it happens every year they don't budget enough for over head water bombers etc. Just like in the winter they don't budget for snow plows they should be prepared for dry hot weather and snow also it's Canada.
We stayed 2 nights in Totem Motel in 2014 on vacation from Norway, beautiful town for trainspotters. Going back there next month, hope to drive through to see what it looks like now.
Lytton is not far from me. I clearly recall a BC Wildfire Service employee who was there and said "The fire appeared to have been SET (emphasis mine) within the Village." Not "climate change", not a railcar, arson. It hasn't been rebuilt because gov't insists that all new structures be "sustainable" and now they're charging homeowners thousands of $ for archeological studies before they can rebuild.
May 13, 2022 then Federal Minister Bill Blair, Minister of Emergency Preparedness , along with other federal ministers and dignitaries announced a $416 million in disaster funding was to be allocated to those who lost their homes in 2021. It was later that Summer of 2022 , that I reached out to my MP in Kamloops requesting if the funds had been transferred. In a letter, I was told that the funds had indeed been transferred to our province. No one in the Monte Lake area who lost their home in the White Rock Lake Fire received any help in regards to these funds to rebuild their homes. This is heartbreaking and I cry every time I hear the stories and the fact that this town is not yet rebuilt. It is 3 years now , unacceptable. Where did the $416 million go ? Get this town rebuilt. I find it frustrating that we send money to other countries in time of crisis but can’t even rebuild a small town here in BC , Canada. Time to get Lytonnites home.

Lytton was badly damaged by wildfires in 1931, 1938 and 1949 but was rebuilt each time. It was burned to the ground in 2021. Yes, it was devastation to those living there, and as yet has not been rebuilt. Should it be rebuilt this time? I'm not so sure. Not unless there is major technology improvements with water systems and building materials, to at least give the people a chance the next time a fire goes through. And, there will be a next time.
Yes the weather is changing, it has been changing for a very long time. This is a natural occurrence, although man has made some significant negligible decisions to destroy our earth. True north and magnetic north have changed, something that has occurs before in time. Yes, this losing a town is very tragic,scary and life changing but man causes more fires than lightening or heat/cold. I can appreciate people looking for causes but blaming climate change for everything is wrong. I would guess the fire was started by a camper or someone in the forest. I would like to know where exactly the fire came from in town or out of town. It looked like it was outside the residence. I hope the people of Lytton stay, rebuild and continue their heritage there.
I am certain it was caused by a train. In other words, by man. Lytton has always been extremely hot & dry in the summer, and I for one, always was afraid this may happen eventually. Tears in my eyes.😢

Far too many fires are human caused. This fire, as roughly 2/3s of all wildfires, was likely human caused. Lightning strikes are fairly constant at 10 - 15% which leaves about ~15% to "other". Wildfires have been decreasing in both number and area burned since 1990 [source is Environment Canada] . Also, Wildfires are roughly 5 - 6 times LESS in burned acreage since 1900 [US Dept of Interior - though the database pre 1986 was removed from public servers in January 2022; there are archived copies available] . Additionally, the number of deliberately set fires has been increasing, including many currently burning [June 2023]. Lytton burned due to the unfortunate combination of a likely human cause and sparked exactly upwind of town on a windy day. Temperatures, while high, were only a bit above normal for that time of year. Lytton regularly sets Provincial and National high temperatures annually. Massive fires like this one are a common event, almost annual, in the area. This piece is very emotive and really short on facts and context, but for that we can thank the Guardian for its usual take. It is unfortunate the town was burned, but it isn't the first time for this or several others in the region.
If we can fly to the moon why can't we fix this problem. How many votes would it get? Priorities are not socially orientated. VOTES are. Keep the seat, get more votes! No politician really cares about fires.
Living in Greece, where alas every summer we have to deal with wild fires due to high temperatures (and some people's stupidity) I thought of Canada as a too humid and low in temperature country for such terrible phenomena.
every year we have forest fires in western Canada especially. But in the past generation it's gotten a lot worse. Just because many parts of Canada get cold in the winter doesn't mean we don't or can't have hot summers in much of the country.

Lytton was a beautiful little town. It had a great chinese restaurant and a sweet grocery store. It had history. it had people. it was special.

It was both. The temp hit 46C that day… everything was very hot & dry… all it took was sparks from the train.

we were there a week before it happened and even then it was 37c while having lunch at the cafe no longer there. due the the 1940's & 50's construction a lot of asbestos, lead and other materials now a health hazards has to be cleaned up before leveling and construction starts. it will be a while.

It won’t happen anytime soon. Our federal government is beyond corrupted under Trudeau and he’s taken all the money for wildfire control and provincial rebuilds during natural disasters and have sent it to Ukraine. Our federal government turned its back on the Provincial Governments and all we British Columbian’s want is to go home to OUR TOWNS AND CITIES! We are not going to move to another town! But we’re tired of fighting a fight that seems like a loss every day Trudeau remains in power. It’s beyond tragic. Canada is beautiful but our government is just as bad as America.

how aweful, seeing this while Alberta, BC, and NS burns really gives u the human side of the loss instead of only ever seeing natures side. it makes me think of all the deadly fires over the centuries and wonder.... Lytton still had it`s cement steps and stone walls, chimneys, so HOW have we lost so many historic buildings that were made from the same materials?

When investigating a fire incident its fairly easy to track down the origin of the fire they must take in count the wind conditions but it's doable.

I’ve just spent too much time this evening watching gripping stories of war, foolish political choices and natural disasters and the effects on people. There is too much that pains me and I need a break. Please, people, before we lose everything, be kind to each other. We’re all we have.

I lived in the Canyon not far from Lytton for 15 yrs, I worked with first nations and heard many stories, including those of great fires. The region is hot and dry for geologic and geographic reasons, always has been. We silly humans have only been keeping climate data records for 150 years, that coincides with the termination of the lowest temperature period on earth in the past 10,000 yrs- this is indisputable fact. Civilization is not much older than 10,000 yrs. Our entire global civilization emerged and developed in this period. Unfortunately, we built in all the wrong places in terms of sustainability in the face of inevitable climate change. We are doomed because of our ignorance and our hubris; we will not alter climate change no matter what we do- the earth is in control, not us and failure to acknowledge this simple truth will be our extinction. We move and adapt or we perish.

Yes I would like to know how much is arson how much is campfires tossed cigarettes etc. too but regardless the provincial response is not adequate they often just shrug and blame climate change though they know it happens every year they don't budget enough for over head water bombers etc. Just like in the winter they don't budget for snow plows they should be prepared for dry hot weather and snow also it's Canada.

We stayed 2 nights in Totem Motel in 2014 on vacation from Norway, beautiful town for trainspotters. Going back there next month, hope to drive through to see what it looks like now.

Lytton is not far from me. I clearly recall a BC Wildfire Service employee who was there and said "The fire appeared to have been SET (emphasis mine) within the Village."
Not "climate change", not a railcar, arson.
It hasn't been rebuilt because gov't insists that all new structures be "sustainable" and now they're charging homeowners thousands of $ for archeological studies before they can rebuild.
May 13, 2022 then Federal Minister Bill Blair, Minister of Emergency Preparedness , along with other federal ministers and dignitaries announced a $416 million in disaster funding was to be allocated to those who lost their homes in 2021. It was later that Summer of 2022 , that I reached out to my MP in Kamloops requesting if the funds had been transferred. In a letter, I was told that the funds had indeed been transferred to our province. No one in the Monte Lake area who lost their home in the White Rock Lake Fire received any help in regards to these funds to rebuild their homes.
This is heartbreaking and I cry every time I hear the stories and the fact that this town is not yet rebuilt. It is 3 years now , unacceptable.
Where did the $416 million go ?
Get this town rebuilt. I find it frustrating that we send money to other countries in time of crisis but can’t even rebuild a small town here in BC , Canada. Time to get Lytonnites home.
Love how the stone chimney is the only thing that remained... because it was made of rock. When they rebuild you can be sure they'll just use wood and other cheap / lightweight / flammable materials once more... gotta please the shareholders!

Lytton burned down nearly two years ago. So far it has been cleaned up but nothing has been rebuilt.
Lytton is still burnt to the ground. I just drove up there past Lytton last week and it was beyond heartbreaking. Not sure why but every time I drive through there I tear up. It rips my heart out to know the government covered up the CN/CP Freight train information and that Lytton is still a pile of rubble. A year later and our Provincial Government of British Columbia realizes it must have been the train but the federal government won’t press on about it anymore. Worst part of this whole debacle is the funds Trudeau promised NEVER EVER CAME HERE. WE HAD NO MILITARY ASSISTANCE NO FEDERAL ASSISTANCE AND ARE LEFT ON OUR OWN. BRITISH COLUMBIANS ARE LEFT ON OUR OWN. 11:33 hit me so hard “I’m not comfortable cause this is not my home. I don’t see my mountains” that part hit my soul. The government wants to relocate us and leave our towns in shambles. We just want to GO HOME AND HOME IS LYTTON.

Lytton was badly damaged by wildfires in 1931, 1938 and 1949 but was rebuilt each time. It was burned to the ground in 2021. Yes, it was devastation to those living there, and as yet has not been rebuilt. Should it be rebuilt this time? I'm not so sure. Not unless there is major technology improvements with water systems and building materials, to at least give the people a chance the next time a fire goes through. And, there will be a next time.

Yes the weather is changing, it has been changing for a very long time. This is a natural occurrence, although man has made some significant negligible decisions to destroy our earth.

I can appreciate people looking for causes but blaming climate change for everything is wrong. I would guess the fire was started by a camper or someone in the forest.

I am certain it was caused by a train. In other words, by man. Lytton has always been extremely hot & dry in the summer, and I for one, always was afraid this may happen eventually. Tears in my eyes.😢

Far too many fires are human caused. This fire, as roughly 2/3s of all wildfires, was likely human caused. Lightning strikes are fairly constant at 10 - 15% which leaves about ~15% to "other". Wildfires have been decreasing in both number and area burned since 1990 [source is Environment Canada] . Also, Wildfires are roughly 5 - 6 times LESS in burned acreage since 1900 [US Dept of Interior - though the database pre 1986 was removed from public servers in January 2022; there are archived copies available] . Additionally, the number of deliberately set fires has been increasing, including many currently burning [June 2023]. Lytton burned due to the unfortunate combination of a likely human cause and sparked exactly upwind of town on a windy day. Temperatures, while high, were only a bit above normal for that time of year. Lytton regularly sets Provincial and National high temperatures annually. Massive fires like this one are a common event, almost annual, in the area. This piece is very emotive and really short on facts and context, but for that we can thank the Guardian for its usual take. It is unfortunate the town was burned, but it isn't the first time for this or several others in the region.

Living in Greece, where alas every summer we have to deal with wild fires due to high temperatures (and some people's stupidity) I thought of Canada as a too humid and low in temperature country for such terrible phenomena.
every year we have forest fires in western Canada especially. But in the past generation it's gotten a lot worse. Just because many parts of Canada get cold in the winter doesn't mean we don't or can't have hot summers in much of the country.

@@dallimamma Actually, its a rainshadow desert and is not part of the Sonoran desert even though it is basically contiguous with it. The coast mountains block the rain coming from the west.
