How I Learned That Focus Beats Discipline

- In this video, I share how I learned that focus is more important than discipline. I used to think being disciplined was enough to achieve my goals, but I realized that without focus, discipline is wasted.
I reflect on my past mistakes of saying yes to everything, spreading myself too thin, and trying to fix every problem. It wasn’t until I understood the power of saying no that I began to make real progress. Saying no buys you time, gives you clarity, and helps you focus on what truly matters.
Through this process, I developed four principles that changed my life:
1. Say No by Default: If something doesn’t help me reach my long-term goals, I say no.
2. Follow the 10-Year Rule: Excellence takes a decade. Commit to what truly matters.
3. Understand Opportunity Cost: Delegate tasks that don’t require your expertise so you can focus on growth.
4. Simplify Everything: A clear calendar and simple systems make focus possible.
These tools help me focus on what’s important: my kids, my health, and my business. If you feel overwhelmed or struggle to focus, maybe it’s time to simplify your life and refocus on your top priorities.
What’s your focus for the next 10 years? Let me know in the comments!
Steve Jobs said “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully”. Thank you for reminding this.
You are right. Thanks!
A very interesting presentation. In a way, one might argue that focus itself is a kind of discipline (just not what most people think of as discipline)--e.g. the discipline to say "no by default," the discipline to simplify, etc. In that sense, focus would be THE foundational discipline, without which other types of discipline are far less effective (or in some cases even ineffective). That of course is all just a question of semantics though, and your points are well made and well taken.
thank you. I have found that it's hard for us people to stay disciplined without the right tools. Willpower to stay fit, eat right or 'say no' is often not enough. We need tools to lean back on so that those daily choices become consistent and effective.
To continue on this, I'm personally a good example of a person who has been disciplined but not focused. Was able to do many things simultaneously (committed to taking action and never giving up) but not getting enough done because I wasn't focused. I did too many things at the same time. In other words, I did not have focus.
I just bumped in to this video , and the first time knowing you. Thank you 🙏🏾
@@dorcasmofosi3247 thank you!
I've been using this video to learning English. You speak slowly, it's good for me and the subject is better.
thank you!
Do you really think that not going through the same headache is helping the process>
