Thank you for this post. I can confirm that ‘blurping’ the water feed does work. According to my HVAC guy, the issue was likely caused by an air bubble that confused the flow sensor. Shutting the inflow valve on and off to get rid of the bubble fixed the issue for me.
Thanks so much for posting this. It worked like a charm for me. Saved hundreds, mental stress and dealing with incompetent technicians wasting my time.
Dude, you saved my weekend! Friday at 6:00 and no hot water. In desperation, I search you tube and there it is! Followed your instructions and BAM! Hot water. This is my second Navien. My first, the predecessor to the model we have, was such a piece of crap that I had in removed and replaced with the 240E. One of the problems with the old unit was that seals and heat exchanges kept blowing out, Finally, after many, many failures, the tech tested the water pressure and found it to be extremely high. After a pressure reducer was installed, things were better and there were no more problems with leaks and blown out components. It still sucked, however, and broke a bunch more times. I ended up negotiating with Navien and the dealer, and we all shared the not-inconsiderable cost of replacing the old unit with the 240E. It’s been much better than the old one, but then there was tonight. Oh well. Now I know another trick. I think that owning one of these necessitates some hands-on activity. As great as it is to have professions come help, it’s $200 a pop, and that’s after you’ve had a cold shower, your house is cold, you’ve stayed home from work to let the tech in. And that’s if you’re lucky enough to have the problem on a weekday. Knowledge is power. Hope the above is enlightening for all of those saying that there should’t be any pressure reducer in the system. Measure your water pressure!
Thank you so much. My parents didn’t have hot water for two days and I went by their house to call a plumber and check it out. Was a slightly different model so it looked a lot different but once I was able to identify the water pressure valve, your method still worked just the same. Appreciate it. They’re so happy 🙂
Eric, thanks for taking the time to post this. Your fix worked for the E351 error I was getting. I also watched your other video that explained the valve release. We now have hot water again! Thanks to you!
I had the same E351 error code today and there is no hot water. I followed your step about pushing that lever up. Initially it shows a message "AIR" on the boiler screen and still no hot water. I then unplug the system and plug it back and turn it on, and the boiler starts working again and I now have hot water. Hopefully this isn't a temporary fix. Thanks for posting this video and saved me a couple hundred bucks.
Tony Yung glad to hear it helped! I find once every few months I’ll have to push the lever up just a tad to get it back to the right pressure. No big deal. Mostly an issue in the summer when the heat isn’t constantly on. I’m not a professional but I believe AIR is the air filter needs to be cleaned. But if it’s fine now don’t mess with it right? Lol
We had the same issue this morning. Our Navien NCB-240E was experiencing the symptoms you described: water too hot, temperature fluctuations, and this morning, no hot water. I flipped the pressure switch up and some water came out of the relief valve. After restarting the unit hot water started running again! Thanks for your post.
if you have one of those valves installed get it out and have system water piped correctly trough outlet on the unit, adjust the heating water pressure on the unit.
I really appreciate your video. I’ve been having this error once in a while. A reset was fixing it but I didn’t know what was the cause. I got a Ncb-240. I have a pressure reducer on it like you. Will do more research and if it’s not needed I will remove it. Thanks again. Great job
Thank you for this. Navien customer support is awful. My local Navien certified technician wanted to be taken off their list because of all the design issues. I’ve already had this valve replaced once on their older model, and I’m guessing this continuing to fail is another design flaw with the unit. Thanks for saving me a few hundred bucks!
@@bigDrob I’m sure you’re right about that. This unit had some major design flaws, though. The combustion chamber seal ended up falling into the chamber, and escaping hot air melted the sheathing on one of the cables, which promptly shorted out the board. The problem is it seems like Noone knows anything about this system and it's a struggle trying to get some one to fix it. Great video! Ive had problems with my unit since day 1, and while it works amazing when it does work- navien units can have design flaws. I paid 200 to a plumber to clean that water valve that you replaced. Two winters in and this problem kept happening. @4am this happened again and i was able to fix it using your video. Thanks so much bro!
spanishflybandit sorry that you had so much problems with these they really are great units! Periodically I have to do this when the pressure gets low maybe once every few months but no big deal. Glad I was able to help!
Worked great. I have a older unit so it was a different looking arm I raised to re-pressurize that was directly above the tank that holds pressure on mine and I only needed 12.4 psi for my size unit in an apartment. Thanks
@@themillennialhomeowner1661 I've had to do this twice a year. Seems like a system flaw. One question is how long to pull the lever. My experience suggests that the hissing sound ends after about 10-15 seconds then water starts to flow and I push the lever back immediately when the water flow is apparent. I'd be curious about your experience.
Thank you for the comment! Same here I was able to do that the first few times as well and then the trick didn’t work. Hopefully it continues to work for you but if not the steps in this video should help.
Good video, this unit has its own water pressure fill valve build in and one that you have there was installed unnecessarily don't need it! there may be an actual problem with it not with the boiler. Plumbers that are not familiar with those units are installing those.
Yes...I'm a contractor...that is the first thing I noticed. I install nothing but Navien because I have 0 call backs on them. Correct installation is the key.
xingle2009 I don’t know the exact in and outs, but I believe it has something to do with the water pressure in the system which causes this E351 error code. I assume not enough water pressure leads to inconsistent temps. At any rate if this video solved your issue you should be good to go 👍🏻
Thank you so much !!! this is a very easy and clear explanation, thank you for posting this video it helped so solve the problem and works great now! and the best I don't need to call a plumber or technician. Thank You!!
Having the same problem here on our new Navien combi NCB 190. We're having at least 2 problems; -one is that the Navien pressure sensor shows ~5PSI lower than gauge pressure ( I've got TWO gauges on the feedwater input, one being very high quality) - Second is that the latest Watts feedwater regulator valves are now made in China (look it up!) Watts now has the "Made in America" decree from the gov., but the feedwater regulators aren't one of them,.. so far. Went to adjust the regulator, it's all over the place,..1/4 turn does nothing, then another 1/4 turn, it jumps 25PSI! ( bleeding it off/resetting the gauges every time) Adjusting it back down has the same ongoing, non-linear BS, it jumps all over the place! Definitely NOT linear! Took me over an hour to get it "more or less" in line to 15 PSI. (we have 40 year old black pipes, 30PSI blew a pipe loop- thank you very much Mr. "know-it-all" plumber!) Might switch to a Conbraco FF feedwater valve or any other American Made unit. And probably switching to a Rennai after the Navien warranty expires/craps out completely. (The Navien is also making weird new motor noises, demand flow sensor not working, etc...all after owning it a whole 7 months!)
The item next to it that has the two half unions is a backflow preventer so you don't backflow water from your system into the city system that's standard on all hot water boilers and steam system
I'm not getting a code but I have those same problems.... water temps. not regulated, have to wait for it to warm up and, not enough water pressure. I will have to try these.
Check the PSI on the lcd screen if your model has that. If it’s low that can be the cause and you may need to “force fill” which is essentially putting more water in your system.
This is why you were told to call a professional. Navien boilers have a built in auto feeder. The Pressure reducing valve you installed is not only not needed on this boiler but will eventually cause severe damage to your unit.
Lance Walker considering I was told the system needed to be force filled by the tech support himself, i disagree with your statement. He told me to hire a contractor because he didn’t want to tell me how to force fill and put pressure back in the system for liability reasons. So, I found out for myself instead of hiring a contractor for hundreds to push up a lever. Not to mention, it’s 3 months later and the pressure hasn’t dropped.
Lance Walker if you read my description I specifically said I’m not a HVAC tech. So for you to assume I think I’m an expert is ignorant in the least. Second, a “professional” like yourself had this unit installed as I bought this house recently with this unit already installed. So you assuming the “professional” like yourself who installed this did it wrong yet again is ignorant and makes you look even less legit. Third, the tech at navien told me to look for the pressure reducing valve to force fill the unit. I couldn’t locate it while on the phone, because again I’m not an expert. Until I did some digging and found out some things about the system. So for you to assume he is wrong, again, is ignorant. Fourth, the manual says the auto feeder valve is a MAKE UP valve and is supposed to regulate the pressure. However, look at any UA-cam video of “professionals” who force fill units and they even say from time to time you have to force fill them. I guess nobody knows what they’re talking about besides you...? 🤷♀️ add into the mix 8 likes on the video and another comment saying it worked for them stacks the deck against your argument. At any rate I’m not going to argue any further on UA-cam over something. You have 20 years experience great. I’m a home owner who is new to all of this and had to learn for myself and has worked for me for months. Also couldn’t find anything online doing it the “right way” without being ripped off by a HVAC tech to come out and hopefully by putting this out there I help someone. Appreciate the opinions, but this worked for me and apparently others as well.
I'm a plumber that is an automatic feed valve which you need on the cold water supply, I am having the same issue with my NCB 240 and I am thinking now that its faulty and needs to be replaced
Although this fixed the issue momentarily, it is a sign that there is a pressure loss, translated it means that there is a leak. These systems are closed loop and once you fill it and set the pressure and purge the system you should close the fill valve.
I want to say for some reason 12psi is in my head for some reason but I’m not sure where I got that from. Too low and the error will come on. As long as I see mine above 12 I don’t mess with it
@@gizmocaca9461 two things that can be. Air in the system (which you should have an air purging system hooked up anyways) or check the air filter coming in. One of my videos shows the air filter I believe. Simple to do if you take off the front cover look in the top back left.
Thank you so much for the video. Mine is Navien NCB-180 Combi, same code E351. Until yesterday I turned the heating system on for the first time of this winter, the domestic side was ok (PSI 10.2) , however, after couple of hours, the machine was turned off itself with code E351. I unplugged and plugged back in with the heating side off, I got hot water back. I watched your video and wanted to find the auto refill valve but there is nowhere to find. Is here anybody knows what's going on with my Navine? Btw, a plumber thinks it maybe leaking somewhere along the pipe lines. Thanks!
Hey there! So I’ll start by saying I am not a professional, all I can do is give my experience. Outside of what I showed in this video I’m not sure how much I can offer but I can try! If it’s leaking somewhere, that’s a bigger issue and I would consult a professional as leaking water anywhere is a big issue. I would re visit trying to find the valve fill on your set up. The e351 error code means a low water pressure. So either water is leaking somewhere (which I would imagine you would see if it leaks that much to cause this issue) or there’s not enough water in the system to have the pressure at a proper level. Follow your water line and see if there’s anything that resembles what I show in this video. If all fails call a professional and watch what they do so you know for next time. 👍🏻
@@themillennialhomeowner1661 Thank you very much for your reply. Actually, I hired a Navien certificated company last summer due to the Heat Exchanger over heat problem. It costs me $1,800 to get hot water back, labor only. The code E351 appeared once and the same person, Adam "fixed" it too. We did turned on the heating system but only for a test. I guess if I called them again that will cost me another $2,000.....
The ncb units have a direct 1/2 make up feed installed from the factory with its own electronically controlled valve. I ran into one that had no make up feed to the unit throwing a e351 code. What this video is showing is someone uneducated installed his boiler and over complicated the system causing the boiler to malfunction whenever it needs make up water
Would you happen to know how to fix the system if the pipes around the system are hot but the baseboard pipes around the house are just warm and not hot enough to warm up the house. However I am getting adequate hot water. Thanks!
I’m not a professional but I do know the hot water is circulated through the circulating pumps. If you look in my videos it’s the green TACO circulators. I would assume if you’re getting hot pipes near the furnace but not up to the baseboards it’s not circulating. I could be wrong though but I would check there first
Also check my other video about raising the water temp. When it gets really cold out you need the water temp to be higher. If you do t have an outdoor thermostat that may be your issue
It continuously drops? Or just once in a while? I notice these errors tend to come up in the winter time. Most likely due to the weather. If it’s once in a while this fix will work. Otherwise the issue may be deeper
None of these things have worked?! When I turn it off per internal switch, and leave it off for 30 minutes, and switch it back on, it says "AIR", then eventually gives me the "E.351" code with the red wrench. I have reset this a hundred times at least... I have no idea what I'm doing, if you can help great, if not, no worry! Thanks either way!
Sabrina Yetley Sabrina AIR means the air filter needs to be cleaned out and this video does not go over that. However E351 error code is covered In this video. If you have the manual for the unit the air filter is easy to locate and clean. After you clean the air filter, unplug the unit (or switch it off) and plug it back in. If AIR is no longer on the unit and it’s just E351 this video should help.
That's called a pressure valve it regulates the pressure into the system when you lift the handle you let City Water fill up your sister you also could adjust those
Manuel. Reset by unplugging the unit and then plugging it back in. If that doesn’t clear the error follow this video. Error code means there’s not enough pressure in the system

Don't think it will cause damage but is just unnecessary, and when external water reducing valve will clog will cause errors.
I'm a plumber that is an automatic feed valve which you need on the cold water supply, I am having the same issue with my NCB 240 and I am thinking now that its faulty and needs to be replaced
Thanks, totally worked
Although this fixed the issue momentarily, it is a sign that there is a pressure loss, translated it means that there is a leak. These systems are closed loop and once you fill it and set the pressure and purge the system you should close the fill valve.
Thank you for the feedback
Luckily it’s held up ever since
Holy cow, you have it 18 psi? Mine’s showing the same error code and it’s at 8.1 not sure how to find out what it should be at
I want to say for some reason 12psi is in my head for some reason but I’m not sure where I got that from. Too low and the error will come on. As long as I see mine above 12 I don’t mess with it
@@themillennialhomeowner1661 thanks for replying and this video. Have you ever had the display read AIR? I can’t find anything about that
@@gizmocaca9461 two things that can be. Air in the system (which you should have an air purging system hooked up anyways) or check the air filter coming in. One of my videos shows the air filter I believe. Simple to do if you take off the front cover look in the top back left.
Thank you!
This is the second video I've seen to do this but that lever is not on my system.
Thank you sooooooo much! It works!
Awesome to hear! Thanks for the feedback
Thanks a lot that helped
Thank you so much!
It worked ! Thanks buddy
Glad to hear! Thanks for the feedback
May want to remove that black iron nipple on the outlet of the pressure reducing valve. Use brass or copper
What is that piece called?
This worked for me without replacing the sensor
teamcelica2 even better! Awesome. Glad I can help!
At first I thought I broke it or my house was gonna explode bc the hissing sound went on for at least 1.5 minutes! Lol! Works like a charm!
Thanks for the help
Pressure keeps dropping me. Should I replace the sensor ?
It continuously drops? Or just once in a while? I notice these errors tend to come up in the winter time. Most likely due to the weather. If it’s once in a while this fix will work. Otherwise the issue may be deeper
Worked great 👍👍
Awesome!
Hi there
Can I use only domestic side and leave boiler side
Hey there, not that I’m aware of.
Thank you.
That did it!
Awesome! Glad to hear.
great video thanks for your help
Leon Demers thanks for the comment, glad I can help!
Worked on my unit thanks alot 👍
Thanks for making this video. This helped so much. I no longer have the error and I am enjoying having hot water and heat again! 🤗
So glad to hear it helped!
Thank you, thank you, thank you .........................thank youuuuuuu. it's working wow.
Good to hear! Thanks for the feedback!
@@themillennialhomeowner1661 Thank you! I'll see what I can figure out!
You might just have air in your pipe, just breathe the air out. Might help.
Where did you buy the water pressure sensor

@@themillennialhomeowner1661 Thank you
When I lifted up the lever water started coming out, please help I’m freezing!
If you lifted this lever water should not be coming out. I’d recommend consulting a professional
That's called a pressure valve it regulates the pressure into the system when you lift the handle you let City Water fill up your sister you also could adjust those
353 error how I can reset or solve thanks
Manuel. Reset by unplugging the unit and then plugging it back in. If that doesn’t clear the error follow this video. Error code means there’s not enough pressure in the system
Calling for water
