Let's talk about some of the things that seem to work across the board to improve strength and improve #hypertrophy and improve nerve to #muscle communication and performance.
The first thing that's absolutely key for nerve to muscle communication and physical performance of any kind might not sound that exciting to you. But it is very exciting and that's salt, nerves, nerve cells, neurons communicate with each other and communicate with muscle by electricity. But that electricity is generated by particular ions moving into and out of the neuron and the rushing in of a particular ion: sodium, salt is what allows nerve cells to fire. If you don't have enough salt in your system, your neurons and your brain and your nerve to muscle communication will be terrible. If you have sufficient salt, it will be excellent. How much salt will depend on how much water you're drinking, how much caffeine you're drinking and how much food you're ingesting. So and whether or not you're taking any diuretics, how hot it is, etcetera, how much you're sweating. So you want to make sure that you have enough salt, potassium and magnesium in your system if you want to perform well, I realize that salt isn't a very glamorous performance tool, but it is vital. It is absolutely vital. And the endurance athletes and the people that train in high heat can speak to the fact that when your electrolytes are low your brain doesn't function, your body doesn't function nearly as well.

Here's a summary of the key points from the video:
    1. **Nerve to Muscle Communication and Salt**:
    - Neurons communicate with each other and with muscles using electricity generated by ions, particularly sodium (salt).
    - Adequate salt intake is crucial for optimal nerve to muscle communication.
    - The amount of salt needed depends on factors like water and caffeine intake, food consumption, diuretics, temperature, and sweating.
    - Along with salt, potassium and magnesium are also essential for optimal performance.
    2. **Creatine**:
    - Creatine has been shown in numerous studies to improve muscle performance.
    - Recommended dosage: For someone around 180 pounds, 5 grams a day is sufficient.
    - Creatine acts as a fuel source for high-intensity activities and also for neurons in the brain.
    - Benefits of creatine include increased power output, improved hydration, increased lean mass, and reduced fatigue.
    3. **Beta Alanine**:
    - Supports exercises of slightly longer duration, blending anaerobic and aerobic movements.
    - Effective for activities in the 60 to 240-second range.
    - Standard dose: Between 2 and 5 grams.
    - Benefits include improved muscular endurance, reduced fatigue, and potential reductions in body fat.
    4. **Electrolytes**:
    - Essential for optimal performance.
    - Important for both mental and physical tasks.
    5. **Beet Juice, Arginine, and Citrulline**:
    - These can improve performance for longer bouts of exercise due to their vasodilation effects.
    - Note: Arginine and citrulline can increase the likelihood of herpes cold sore outbreaks.
    6. **Nutrition and Muscle Performance**:
    - For muscle growth, a caloric surplus of about 10 to 15% is recommended.
    - Ingesting 700 to 3000 milligrams of the essential amino acid leucine with each meal supports muscle synthesis.
    - Protein density: Animal proteins tend to have a higher density of essential amino acids compared to plant-based sources.
    - Eating frequency: Eating 2 to 4 times a day with sufficient amino acids is recommended for muscle repair, growth, and strength improvements.

Salt can vary in many forms but specifically, the salts that are highgly involved in cardiovascular, endurance and strenght training are:
      - Potassium
      - Magnesium
      - Chloride
      - Calcium
      - Sodium
Zinc and Pyridoxine (B6) may also have a big impact on testosterone production which will lead to more muscle mass gains. A ZMA supplement is a staple for bodybuilding world.

I lost a ton whenever i stressed about it and counted my hairs in the shower. stop caring. also, it’s very possible you’re growing into a “mature hairline” and balding will slow or subside for a while. i lost a lot between 16-18, stopped losing until maybe 24, and then it slowly starting again now that im 25. by this point i hardly care anyways. it’s very hard as a young man though, i understand the struggle. love yourself brother man, and focus on becoming so confident and valuable for YOURSELF, and girls want to fukk your bald ass all day.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🧠 Importance of Electrolytes and Salt
    - Ensuring sufficient salt, potassium, and magnesium in your diet is vital for optimal nerve-to-muscle communication and physical performance.
    - Electrolyte balance impacts not only physical activities like endurance training but also cognitive tasks such as studying and analytical work.
01:53 💪 Benefits of Creatine Supplementation
    - Creatine supplementation, within recommended doses, can significantly enhance muscle power output by 12-20% during activities like sprinting, running, jumping, and weight lifting.
    - It aids in better hydration, muscle mass increase, and fatigue reduction, with potential cognitive enhancement effects.
05:33 🏋️ Effects of Beta Alanine on Exercise
    - Beta alanine supports exercises of slightly longer duration, improving muscular endurance and anaerobic running capacity, while also reducing fatigue.
    - It showcases promising effects on the reduction of body fat and the enhancement of lean mass.
07:10 🏃‍♂️ Performance Boosters for Endurance Activities
    - Beet juice, Arginine, and Citrulline can enhance performance during longer bouts of exercises due to their vasodilation effects, promoting increased blood flow.
    - It's important to note potential side effects of Arginine and Citrulline, such as increased cold sore outbreaks, especially for individuals prone to herpes simplex virus (HSV-1).
09:02 🍽️ Importance of Amino Acids and Protein Density
    - Consuming 700 to 3000 milligrams of the essential amino acid leucine with each meal aids in supporting muscle synthesis and repair, particularly for muscle hypertrophy and strength.

The thing that made me a believer in creatine happened when I was not regularly working out. I had strained a bicep muscle picking up something heavy at work and it just would not go away. Then, six months later when I decided to start working out again I started taking creatine and the strain went away within a day or two. So I think it also helps with recovering from injury. It would make sense because the muscles are able to absorb more water.

    • @TheDoctor46vr
      @TheDoctor46vr Рік тому +10

Potentially, but also one of the worst things anybody can ever do with an injury is to avoid using it at all. This can have the opposite effect, I'm not saying you did this at all. But it is essential to flood an injured area with blood to accelerate recovery, obviously proceed with caution.
And if it's a joint, flooding the area with blood to the supporting muscles and synovial fluid (the lubricating fluid of our joints) to speed up recovery.
Good thing you started working out again.

You get all your amino acids from Raw Fruits and vegs, once you cook vegs you lose them acids. Just take a look at Gorillaz, they don't have any protein except for the occasional grub but all in all they are ripped on a plant based diet.

Absolutely! Salt isn't just about adding flavor to food; it plays a vital role in our nervous system's communication and helps maintain peak physical performance. Our bodies rely on sodium ions to transmit nerve impulses, allowing muscles to contract and ensuring proper function of the heart and other organs. It's essential to strike the right balance in salt intake for overall health and well-being!

Creatine is amazing I don't know if it belongs on a list of supplements people haven't heard of at this point it's probably the most studied and talked about but it is great for building muscle. Except if you're not extremely careful with getting one that is highly absorbable and one that has too many heavy metal toxins which so many supplements do, there's so much garbage on the market, ... It could potentially lead to destroying your gut being really hard on your digestion. And in some cases it will increase hair loss if you're someone who is already susceptible

I realize that Dr. Huberman is specifically talking about supplements in this video. But I do worry that some viewers may walk away with the wrong impression. Supplements are not the answer to health and fitness for the vast majority of people.
Dr. Huberman has myriad long-form videos on a wide range of topics. They're outstanding. And there is so much knowledge to be gained from watching them.
However, for the masses, I think it's more important to focus on the critical basics. Those basics include getting sufficient and high-quality sleep (easier said than done for many people), eating a variety of healthy foods, ensuring you are doing both resistance and cardio training (even if just walking), and actively working to reduce your stress levels.
In Andrew's videos, he and his always-excellent guests offer all sorts of research-based details on both these foundational items and so many more topics.
But much of his content comes back to those core tenets of health and fitness. If we could nail those, we would be doing more for the benefit of our lives and bodies than most any supplement could offer.
