I think Bret Hart played an important role in the evolution of The Undertaker back in the 90s as the matches they had in 96-97 showed everyone that Undertaker was more than just a "gimmick", he could wrestle and work with a mat technician. It not only added another dimension to his character but proved that with the right opponent, he could deliver a classic wrestling match and there's no better person to give the fans that kind of masterpiece than Bret Hart.
Bret’s ring psychology was out of this world. He did for pro wrestling what The Dark Knight did for superhero films. He grounded the whole thing into reality and made everything he did make sense in the real world.
@@WSPBane We did see WWF live quite a bit when we were kids. Our first live event was at the Cow Palace in SF/Daly City and I remember the opening match was British Bulldog vs Million Dollar Man w/Sensational Sherri
It's a shame we didn't get an Undertaker vs Bret Hart match at WrestleMania. I'm sure it would have been one of the greatest matches in WrestleMania and WWE history.
Bret had the best matches in the 90’s. It isn’t even close .. Diesel’s best matches, Shawn’s best matches, Stone Cold’s etc. I watched a match with Bret & Sid the other day … it was a great match. Also think Piper’s best matches was vs Bret as well.
0:22 to 00:52 illustrates why I do consider The Hitman & Taker my two faves pro wrestlers ever, they were the total package (hey Lex !) in pro wrestling and the ultimate pro at it. 2 unique minds that were overthinking both out & in the ring how to make a match & their opponent the best possible and entertaining us fans in the process. To me both Bret & Mark are wrestling geniuses and 2 of a kind talents like we've never seen before and will never see again. Thanks for the memories !
I remember watching one of Bret's matches against Owen and being blown away at how good the match was. It was non stop action packed excellence from start to finish. Even as a little kid I recognized how lucky I was to be in the audience
You can call Bret salty, butt hurt and anything else you want. But his talent and ability to put on great matches and make his opponents look good is an extremely rare skill. Especially in today's wrestling landscape where not many people can actually do storytelling through their ring work.
Unbelievable how things come around full circle.. I'm born / raised in Calgary Alberta Canada.. My favorite childhood wrestler: Bret Hart as well as the entire Hart family. Fast forward some years, The Undertaker, another one of my childhood/ all time favorites.. The Both of them (Bret/ Mark) were some of the WWE's best talent. Ever To this day I love Taker / Bret as individuals and top talent wrestlers.. Bith are a large part of who I am to this day. 🤘
What was great at those times is how the "smaller" wrestlers were presented on TV. By that they gave you a reason why somebody like Bret, Savage, HBK etc. could beat the much bigger guy. For instance with Bret they made it known how he had been wrestling since he was in diapers being trained by one of the legit shooters of his era. They talked about how great he was technically and how the "wrestler" can beat the bigger guy by breaking him down and getting him on the ground. And Bret made sure to work that in his matches, so him beating somebody like Sid, Taker or Diesel didn't seem that far fetched. With HBK it was all about his speed, athleticism and endurance along with his perserverance never say die attitude. Basically he was going to be like a ping pong ball and bounce around the ring until his bigger opponent tires. With Savage it was just how intense and crazy he was and that he will do whatever it takes to win. To me we just don't get enough of that in modern wrestling from a story and presentation standpoint which makes it harder for me to suspend my disbelief when somebody like Balor is in there with Gunther or Priest.
In my mind that’s when taker finally got to show his ability to work. Before he was just the undead monster but then you got to see the real worker in him. It was great
Bret had great matches with each and every wrestler that suprised me. You can have chemistry with one or two but how come all his matches were classics suprises He was truly the master of execution 🫡
I remember that Summerslam 97 Bret vs Taker match where Bret kicked at Taker's legs as Taker laid on his back. Bret knew where to go, hit him with the Sharpshooter.
What was done to Bret both in 1997 and in WCW was just purely wrong. Idc what anyone says or who they like as their wrestler it was pure WRONG. Especially in the WWE it was wrong. Because if that hadn't happened he could've stayed and still wrestled in the 2000s. Or if Bill didn't concuss him or had he not still wrestle and get more concussions he could've wrestled in the WWE in the 2000s(hopefully by then). Because an early retirement for a guy like Bret was/is just sad.
I would love to hear the match up at WrestleMania 19 when Taker went up against A-Train and Big Show. People overlook that match in Marks career, but it was a physical match up for Mark. Its also his only Mania and to my knowledge his only handicap match he preformed in. We know it was suppose to be a tag team match and it was scrapped. I would love to hear the back story and lead up to that match and also the physicality of it, cause Mark had to do a lot in that match physically against two BIG men at that time. Also would love to know how it felt having Limp Bizkit play one of his trade mark themes and what it felt like to ride down WM19's ramp with the chopper Live at Mania cause that was a long ramp to the ring. Love the podcast and look forward to it every week, you guys are great, much love
Invite Bret to the show! Have a pink light shining above and convince him to wear that legendary black leather jacket! Discuss what the wrestling business was like in the good old days and all the shenanigans the boys would get up to
I remember hoping Taker beat Bret at the Royal Rumble as a kid do it would setup a Taker v Shawn at WM12, telling my brother they would have an epic match.. I didnt know at the time it would happen 13 years later
Hey taker great episode I've always been impressed by Bret Hart and his wrestling abilities and I have a question for you on a side note but would you be able to have Sting on for a episode that would be awesome
Is this a re-upload? I have certainly seen this before on here. I hope this means Bret is gonna come on the podcast soon because he really is missing :X.
Bob Backlund was the best there is , the best the was and the best there ever will be .. second is thee ultimate warrior master of the close line and 3rd was Hollywood hulk hogan (black beard version)
I think, without the Undertaker gimmick, Mark becomes another Bazerka/Warlord. I was never a fan of a no-sell gimmick. Same for Warrior, Hogan, Goldberg. It breaks kayfabe.
Have to get Bret on the show.
No they don't, he's boring
@ The majority is sorry you feel that way.
Bret hart and Goldberg in the same show 😂
@@fallibleangel9101 yeah he's wrong. Bret is the dryest comedian ever and it works

We need Brett on this podcast. That would be epic

Yes
As long as he clears his throat before the interview...

Absolutely
Bret Hart is the GOAT.
🐐🐐🐐
Of what?
He's definitely in the conversation.

Bret could have a 5 star match with a broom. One of the, if not, the best to ever do it.
It might be hard, but I think he could make it work better with a mop
Bret is my all time favorite wrestler
I love BH. He was my favorite, before Taker. ;)
Bret’s ring psychology was out of this world. He did for pro wrestling what The Dark Knight did for superhero films. He grounded the whole thing into reality and made everything he did make sense in the real world.
Never thought of it like that but you’re right. Great post.
Touche
Hmmm, after thinking on this…… I have to agree. 👍🏿
Please get Bret on the show!
Back in high school my friends and I took a road trip out to Fresno and saw Bret vs Taker at the Royal Rumble. It was awesome to see them live
That’s a life time memory
Talk about a great memory to have with your friends. I wish we'd done that, we did many things but never saw WWE live.
@@viking88968 We had nosebleed seats but some of us cheered for Bret, some for taker. My buddy made a sign that said “Hit Man needs to be hit!!!” 😂

Cmon Taker, get my man Bret on the show. I love the stories from back in those days with you 2
Unpopular Opinion I liked Undertaker's matches with Bret Hart over Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart
Agreed
100%
The Taker vs Bret matches feel more realistic but I watch the Shawn vs Bret ones for technical wrestling
Same
Definitely. The SummerSlam and one night only matches were definitely better
It's a shame we didn't get an Undertaker vs Bret Hart match at WrestleMania. I'm sure it would have been one of the greatest matches in WrestleMania and WWE history.
NO FLIP FLOPS!!! This day is legend.
Mr. UnderTaker - Please have Bret join your podcast. That would be great to hear stories from you both!
Mark, please have Bret on the show. This will be a match made in heaven (or hell) ;)
Yes and make it a mega 3 hours episode! I'd make an actual rewatch tradition out of it
96-97 Was perhaps my favorite time in wrestling. So much great stuff was going on.
96-99 are the greatest years ever imo
The year from SummerSlam 97 - SummerSlam 98 was absolutely insane.
two of the greatest wrestlers
Bret vs undertaker should be studied by all upcoming wrestlers
Bret is the Goat in the ring!
Shawn is better.
No. @@GrayRedRoom
@@sobbyhasselhoff Yes.
No, he isn't.
@GrayRedRoom Shawn oversells and that makes the match look laughable.

Bret was nowhere near a total package. Very little charisma and mic skills.
I remember watching one of Bret's matches against Owen and being blown away at how good the match was. It was non stop action packed excellence from start to finish. Even as a little kid I recognized how lucky I was to be in the audience

We were robbed of a Undertaker v Bret Hart at WrestleMania
Taker and Bret are still very close friends,he should be on the show unless medical issues prevents Bret from flying to Houston.
