  • Why the US Navy Retire Littoral Combat Ship?
Retiring LCSs because their primary armament proved technologically unworkable is akin to retiring brand-new Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyers because their main battery, an advanced gun system, fires ammunition that navy leaders correctly declared unaffordable. They had the Zumwalts repurposed as shipkillers, intending to use them as platforms for launching hypersonic missiles alongside their cruise missile complement.
The navy's fiscal year 2023 budget proposal calls for the decommissioning of nine young LCSs, citing the decision by the leadership to forego the anti-submarine "mission module" that was supposed to be installed aboard these hulls. Instead, the upcoming Constellation-class frigates will be responsible for sub-hunting.
