I'm from hamilton, grew up here. You should go to the hamilton gardens, duck island ice cream, hire a bike and bike the river track (can cover much more ground, make a day of it), the base if you're into shopping, the Hobbiton is not too far out which is popular with tourists, Raglan Beach 45 mins from hamilton. If you're here on the weekend there is a farmers market on Saturday and a gourmet in the gardens on Sunday. You missed hamilton east but there is nice shops
Duck Island just opened a new ice cream parlor at Newmarket, Central Auckland.
Yup, got a Duck Island here in Welly too
Na Mate - the Micky Ds and KFC he showed are in Ham east, right across from Steele Park. It was fun for me to figure out where he was as I haven't lived there for 40 years and haven't been back to NZ since before Covid. Miss it a bit...
@@gurkharugbyray where you now bruiser?
@@TNP1990 San Diego since late last century :). I used to live down cook street from the Mickey Ds in the vid. My sister lived a few blocks the other way. Just fell into this Poms channel a few days ago and making me homesick ( a bit)
Hamilton is a city that serves it's rural province and also is has a big university, whereas Auckland and Wellington are port cities so there is a different kind of vibe, Christchurch is somewhere in-between. I think the gloomy winters don't help it's reputation also
Like nearly in most of the country of my birth, I do miss the sea and the harbour ports around the country. There are very few places too far away from the coast in New Zealand. Shipping, once a preferred method of transportation of freight and people before it wasn't any more made for the excitement of movement and thoughts of far off destinations. Provincial ports, were once a hustle and bussel of coming and going and mechanised activity. Large cranes stood like sentinels along tar and sand covered planks where trucks received their loads, often waiting in lines along sturdy wooden wharves. The smell of the sea, ever present and defining where kids fished for "spotties" using hand lines wound around a wood stick.
British seamen and ship girls, Fishing Boats from Taiwan, seagulls loudly squawking overhead or fighting among each other for food scraps. Mussel shells; their flesh scraped out ending up as bait on lines to tempt fish who had seen it all before and now seldom took any notice other than sometimes nibbling at the Mussel bait skillfully avoiding the hook.
Yeah I remember the story of the Beatles. They lived in Liverpool a port city. The sailors would come off the ships bearing the records of chuck berry , little Richard etc. and wearing the latest wildest rock and roll threads from the USA. I guess Wellington and Auckland had these switched on vibes as well being port cities. I would reckon curls might know all about Liverpool as well!!!
Title - Is this New Zealand's WORST city?
My Brain - "I bet he's in Hamilton"
My first thought was Palmy, but then I realised he said “is” and there was no way he’d still be asking the question if he was in Palmy.
Bang on yo, I seen the back ground and recognized the shithole
Same😂
Thank god for the Waikato expressway. No need to go to Hamilton ever again
Sir John Cleese.british actor ,, said Palmy, was the suicide capital of the world,,1990s -2000s,,, I laughed for years,,,. born and bred,,,. still laugh...
If you have a smile on your face and are friendly, you won’t go wrong most places……
Snarl frown and be standoffish, no one will want to know you regardless.
When it comes to things being open, we are a small country of 5 million people. Most of us like weekends off and a easy going lifestyle. That’s why we live here, that is our countries character.
If we want 24/7 everything we can move overseas.
found this hilarious, like watching paint dry but funnier somehow. Curls, I think you are a perfect match for the NZ sense of humour, though reading the serious comments about their lovely town you wouldn't think so.
The Riff Raff statue is usually where the Embassy Theatre used to stand, where Rocky Horror's film creator Richard O'Brien was inspired to write Rocky Horror. He played Riff Raff, thus the statue. He worked as a barber and after work would watch double feature horror and science fiction movies at the Embassy. Being Rocky Horror's birthplace is probably the most unknown fun fact about Hamilton :) The statue has been moved while the new theatre is being built, but usually has a webcam in the statue so you can look at Hamilton through Riff Raff's eyes :) Pretty cool!
Statue bro? 😅
I moved to welly from Hamilton 8 months ago and this was so lovely to watch. Grey street was my old neighbourhood at one point so it just feels so nice to see a POV walking down my old streets. Glad you enjoyed Hamilton/Kirikiriroa!!
Hamilton was where the 'McGillicuddy Serious Party' originated in the 1980s, the city was a lot less interesting back then so people made their own entertainment ;-) It's also the only city left with an active "Alfs Imperial Army" regiment.
You may find it interesting but that colorful sculpture in front of riff raff is designed to be "Rakau" (sticks) that are used mainly to teach the colors in Te Reo Maori. Quite often acompanied by the song "Ma is white
"
Genuinely did find that interesting! Cheers Daryl, great fact and great bit of knowledge.
There are literally millions of sushi places in Hamilton so I think you will really enjoy your stay here
“Keep it wide” is so that art taken from the images from your video can’t be ripped off, replicated and sold online for cheap
I live in Hamilton, everything bad you've heard is absolutely true.
Its only advantages are
1. It's not Auckland
2. It's an hour-ish to Raglan, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Coromandel, Auckland.
The CBD at night gets worse every time I visit, a shame as my mother grew up there, and I have been visiting since the 70s.
I grew up around where you were walking past the KFC, in wellington st. It was such a nice thing you did and my brother and Ispent many school holidays on the banks of the Waikato. I hope part 2 is at the gardens they are so nice to visit. Loving your content.
The wide angle shot request, is because for a while people were taking close ups all round of art ( mostly pottery ) to copy stuff. At least one prolific offender was busted. Not cool. Also dumb, as it is difficult to get away with that in NZ.
Thank you for letting me know this Allan! Totally reasonable request from the lady but I couldn’t work out the exact thought behind it. Cheers!
I guess you know about Duck Island from Wellington but it originates in Hamilton East across the street from where you were walking. Its an icecream place if you don't know.
They just open a new open at central Auckland.
love this style of video and your attitude! makes me think to appreciate daily things we get used to
Nothing wrong with the Tron. Spent a few great years there
Hamilton is in between a rock and a hard place regarding the cultural fabric of New Zealand. It cops the "bigger brother"-style teasing from the likes of Auckand and Wellington but also receives some "tall poppy syndrome" sledging from the rest of the country.
Aussie here. KFC. Reminded me of my trip to Apia. Transit in Auckland. Evening flight out 1998 (well before 911). Distinct kfc smell in the cabin. Ask crew “what’s that about?” “oh that’s the kfc in the overhead. Returning family bringing it home. This is the kfc run!” Classic
Auckland is New Zealand's worst City most Kiwis don't consider Auckland even part of NZ lol
You should come to Napier, you'll love it. Beautiful art deco buildings and much more!
and the aquarium!
And gangs
Hamilton may have a population of 180000. If you go to the Base, that's where 179000 are 😂. Hamilton is what you make of it. It's so beautiful. Its the outskirts of Hamilton that's amazing!! The rural areas are vast, green and clean❤️❤️
I made the mistake of trying to go to The Base on Boxing Day. Drove straight back out.
@@ILoveAngie69 Horrible road system around Te Awa..it's crazy on a slow day. The mistake my kids made was to work there and not get their car licence 🤦
What is the "Base" One of the Forces Base?
@@billporter846 the Base is a huge shopping complex
@@ceeeno5491 Well I never would have guessed that. Nice to know tho' Thanks.
we used to have paddle steamers on the Waikato River in the 80's & 90's
Worst drivers in NZ are on the South Auckland motorway haha!
Lived half my life in Hamilton (still do) and I instantly figured that's what this video was about when I saw the title haha
Awesome video Curls! Hope you are doing great!
Hell no, I think Hamilton is one of the best cities in NZ now in all honestly. Great beautiful place with a slower pace of life.
I have lived here for 6 years after leaving Auckland where I was born and lived so far this city is better than my old home city of Auckland...but that's just my opinion..but enjoy 😉
Hamilton's lovely bro, doesn't deserve the hate and this is coming from an Aucklander
Couldn’t agree more mate!!
Same here
What about the bang bangs, i feel like every time there is a murder on tv it is always either Christchurch or Hamilton
It’s a dump
This place looks great, curls always keeps positive and he makes the best of things. He manages to walk around this town and it is so quiet he seems to be on his own but he seems happy about it and makes the best of things. NZ is curls kind of place.
The worst town in NZ is Hastings, IMHO. Generally, it's the friendly people that make up for the uninteresting sights. Ever walked around a town where you feel as if the council don't care enough? If not, visit Hastings.
I hate the weather there, but otherwise there's nothing wrong with Hamilton. The damp cold in the winter, and the humidity in summer is horrible (my opinion only) but it's a perfectly nice city.
Totally agree with you. From what I’d heard, I expected far, far worse. Very pleasantly surprised and looking forward to coming back!
Come to Wellington then. You'll suddenly be wishing for Hamilton's weather very quickly
I grew up in Hamilton East, my cousin and I loved it, was close to the city and we walked everywhere, down by the river or over to the lake. Has some really great restaurants. The Base. river walks.
I usually tell people who are travelling that Hamilton is a great place to use as a base to travel from, you can go on day trips to Rotorua, Taupo, Thames - Coromandel - Waihi, Raglan, Waitomo Caves and Auckland.
Welcome to my hometown. Nice little walkabout you are doing. From the comments below, looks like there are a lot of Hamiltonians follow your videos. Enjoy our lovely city
As someone from Hamilton this amazing! Its great to see walk around the shops and being able to regonize them. I always thought Hamilton was pretty broing, but its nice to see how enthusiastic people are coming here.
No the Tron isn't the worst city. I made some of my best friends in Hamilton.
At first I thought he was being sarcastic about the place but think he's just very positive and appreciative.
Funny you said Las Vegas, you were about 200m from the Tainui Casino & Hotel! Hamilton is also a university town with around 20,000 NZ and International students invading it from March. Went there myself 40 years ago, even though Auckland Uni was closer as the Waikato campus is beautiful and away from the centre.
Hold on really I am gonna kill Charon by now
After spending a decade in Auckland and then moving to Hamilton I can confirm Auckland drivers are worse!
I love your videos so much me and my friends all watched your pies rating video and we all live in hamilton. Keep up the great content
I love Hamilton brother, I lived there for 14 years and its shat on a lot but honestly its a beautiful city in the heart of the Waikato surrounded by a lot of greenery. It has everything you need, its not to big or small and best of all it is central to places like the east coast coromandel. You have Raglan, Waitomo on the west coast, Taupo to the south and if you like the big smoke (Auckland) that's to the north. There's also a lot of nice hikes, walks, scenic things to do in and around Hamilton. The people of Hamilton are as i like to say my kind of people haha. The critiques are most likely coming from people who have never lived there and don't know anything about Hamilton. I went to the gardens for the first time 12 years ago and they looked nothing like they do today, they have come a long way and it is beautiful.
I was at the gardens, they are good
Should’ve have gone to the sushi shop that you can see just before you spotted the bakery, best sushi in town.
I did both of those things mate but my stupid video editing software meant I had to cut so much out :( hopefully will splice them into part two!
@@itscurlsbaby check out Last Place bar and Wonderhorse if you're still in town too
I love how there’s a Tesla Model Y that passes him at the start lol.
Did it burst into flames
Was brought up in Hamilton. The place where the fountain is use to be called garden place. There use to be two shallow pools with fountains back in the day. As a kid we use to have a swim before catching a bus home. You use to catch the buses on Victoria street.
Me too, I used to love going to Garden Place, I loved seeing the fountains as a small child and lost a baby tooth standing next to one of the fountains as I was eating a toffee. Loved going to Woolworths and getting the pic n mix lollies and sometimes as a special treat we would go to the top floor lunch room at the department store (forget the name of it now) and had lunches that seemed so sophisticated to me, with salads that included beetroot, boiled eggs, ham and tinned green peas, lol! The DIC, that's it, anyone remember the DIC?
Well done for you're first outside vid great picture and sound
I like Hamilton mainly because my best friend lives there still a lovely place and people ❤️
Thank you so much Sharon as always for your lovely words!! Was happy to get the first one done. Hamilton definitely exceeded my expectations
The statue of Riff Raff from the Rocky Horror Show, is outside the Hamilton Museum because Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff) was born in Hamilton and went to school here.
Dont miss out on the Te Aroha Soda Mineral baths
Thanks for taking me down memory lane in my hometown, Curls!
I've lived in Hamilton for 7 years now and I love it.
I live in Auckland and I think I could move there... Quieter, just the right size
I’ve lived in Hamilton for nearly 30 years and I’ve never been in the Art Post building although I’ve passed it many times. Looks like I’ll need to visit cause it looked awesome. The only thing I’m starting to dislike about Hamilton is the amount of traffic we have now compared to a few years ago otherwise I love living here. Just the right size and it’s beautiful down by the river and the lake. Lots of good things to enjoy 👍
Try Hamilton at NIGHT.
Hamilton, where I was born. I live in Europe now, but I really miss NZ pies, (and L&P, can't get them here;)
Great one. I really like the way you presenting .
Art Post is great, taken photos in there myself. Next time you are in Hamilton check out the “Hamilton Gardens” a really unique collection of themed gardens. There is a short taster video on my channel if you want to check it out. I was often in Hamilton for work a few years back, nice place, not so stupid busy as Auckland 😀
Hey mate :) Hamilton gardens coming in part two, absolutely loved it!
@@itscurlsbaby hey man Huntly is voted the worst town in NZ consistently x'D Hamilton is a nice place to visit if you stick too the right areas just stay out of Nawton, thats Mob territory and east Hamilton belonga to the Tribal Hucks (thou honestly they are pretty nice guys for meth dealers)
You should definitely hit up the Zoo thou that place is awesome and make your way over to the Taranaki region, the mountain the sea the coastal region will blow people's mind!
I've driven many places in NZ and by far the worst drivers I found were in Tauranga and Auckland. Spent many years in Hamilton and have also lived in all 3 cities I've mentioned.
That theater has only just started being built
Hamilton's great. Easy access to many other cities. Close to the Coromandel, Auckland, Taupo, Rotorua and raglan. Great for people who like to get out town in the weekend and do stuff. Less traffic than most other the cities. Close to agriculture. Less windy than any other city in NZ. Colder nights than any other city. Lots of rain but that is NZ.
Whoever says Hamilton drivers are bad, tell them to try Christchurch. Drivers will run over a woman with a pram crossing the road if they have right to turn with no red lights on. They will shout at you if you are carrying a bag full of groceries. I had so many near miss around the Kaikoura motorway at night, people dont check their side mirrors. I saw one clearing the windscreen when was on the road and stopped at the traffic light with his arm. I have a huge list lol I used to live in Grey Street. You freshened my memories. But hey you did not go to Huntly. Real Hamilton lol
Too true, drivers in Chch are unmatched and it’s definitely my least favourite thing about living here. Trying to cause accidents in merge lanes to no end is a competitive sport which is pretty depressing but all you can do is be courteous and try to buck the trend.
Glad you enjoyed exploring my home town. Great video
Look at all those empty Shops but that's every city in NZ due to the Lockdowns over the last 3 years
NZ just has a lot of shops per capita but they're not near where most people work
Yooo we got an outdoor video!
Mate you should definitely look at settling in this place, it looks grouse! Walking around there it looks to be a very calm and sedate place where you could really get your head together. Good Onya Curley ,after your ordeal in Aussie this place could be the go!
Richard O'Brien was the original Riff raff in the Rocky Horror Picture Show and he was from NewZealand, possibly Hamilton
Only reason people hate on Hamilton is because its like the only major city that is more than an hour away from a beach. Also got mean sports teams in every sport close to canterbury
With ocean rise, that distance will be a good thing
Which is exactly why it is going to boom and have good logistics. The port cities are in terrible locations to expand. Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga in particular have no free land to go to
Raglan is only 30 mins drive. Not an hour to a beach...
That's not the only reason actually
Lived on Hamilton in the 60's Hillcrest, went to Hillcrest Normal School, loved my time there running round garden place and Hamilton lake use to trample up and down the stairs in the was it called the plaza, can't remember long time ago 😊
Great video so many cool things, hope you got a chance to check out the central library in garden place, and the meteor theatre (a lot of surprisingly good community theatre groups in Hamilton)
still no high rises in the Tron, my brother is Captain Compost,
the excitement!!! when u say you're easily pleased..!!! so true..great tour..cute as..
That place witch looks like the building been pull down going to be our new opera theater
Hamilton is a lovely place. It’s 30 mins drive to/from my place.
Haha! Hamilton ain't that bad. You'll have to check out Palmerston North also. Another city that has a bad rep, but is also a university city, so is quite multicultural and surprisingly arty and quirky.
Thyme Square is closed until their insurance comes through. They were cleaned out by thieves a week or so before Christmas..
Although Hamilton's not that bad, it's still the chlamydia capital of NZ
Couple years out of date there.
So I'm also a NZ immigrant, and I'm also mad about sushi. Here's what I don't get about sushi in NZ though (maybe a topic for a future video): why are there so few fish options?? I mostly see salmon, chicken, vegetables, etc, but rarely ever any other fish (tuna? mackerel? eel? prawn even??). We're an island nation, surrounded by fish, yet so few fishy sushi options.
True
my fav is always the hot air baloonz luv them soooo much and the lake ❤
Loved seeing a vlog of you strolling through my city and enjoying yourself, I think I nice place in Hamilton to go to Till's Landing, it's a lookout located in Dinsdale 😊
Hamilton is what Invercargill would be like if it was warmer………..

First of all welcome friend. Hamilton can be boring if you are a boring person. We got a lot of lovely walking areas lots of parks then our Waikato river then at night night clubs
Next time you go to Auckland, try Epolitos pizza, she is Italian American, and has won multiple gold medals for her food. In Onehunga.

Hamilton city is nice, but the best part is the Gardens.
Absolutely. Coming in part two tomorrow!
My favourite city in nz and I'm from Scotland.
Just stay away from around the hospital lol
Best sushi is on ward Street.
Oh I have missed the sound of those crossing beacons!
Australia's biggest Gum trees are in Hamilton, not sure if the walk track is still open,
Did pretty well. Visited some of the stabby areas without incident. Honestly during the day like that, usually people just tell you to eff off. You did well.
I enjoy watching this bloke's videos from NZ. It's good fun, and educational as well.

I grew up in Hamilton and I always hated it. Some people are saying its not so bad but I just cant bring myself to like it.
Kiwis allover nice and friendly.... why should hamilton, New plymouth, tauranga ..... be different?
I was last there in 1988. It hasn't changed at all.
