The Katz-Moses Woodworkers with Disabilities Fund (KMWDF) is a non-profit that proudly supports woodworkers who have physical and mental disabilities by providing the resources they need to grow their hobby, craft or business. All too often, our fellow craftsmen and women with disabilities have a hard time obtaining the resources they need to pursue their passion and reap the rewards woodworking has to offer.
Today we aim to make a huge positive impact in the maker with disabilities community by announcing our Build Up Initiative
    Here’s the basics:
Follow the links below for more information.
We are raising money for electric hoists and work holding tools to supplement the program below.
We have created a semi-autonomous, first of it kind application system that pairs those who need help with those who can provide it. In addition we have created 3 step by step sets of plans that you can build for yourself or donate to the charity. All the proceeds from the plans go to the charity and the money we are raising to help buy electric hoists, work holding tools and fund general help for those that need it will be put to immediate use.
If you don’t want to donate monetarily or by building something but want to get involved, we have created a tab within the same application system above to let you apply to be a helper. This means you can donate your time to people in your area who may need help with basic tasks like unloading a truck, assembling a newly donated tool, flipping over a table top etc.
CHECK OUT THE LINKS BELOW FOR LOTS MORE INFORMATION ON HOW TO GET INVOLVED.

I have chronic fatigue and severe joint instability, making lifting and moving wood around extremely challenging, and I just welled up with tears that a charity like this exists. It's so difficult to be a passionate maker while being disabled, and I really, really appreciate the existence of this group. Thank you for caring about a group of people often left out of communities. It really means a lot. 🥺😭

I'm a maker who suffers from low vision. Actually, I'm far beyond being legally blind. Woodworking is a life passion of mine and I've spent over a decade (over half my life) to figure out how to do woodworking without, you know, getting seriously injured, while also producing work I love. The road is anything but easy, but I'm very glad someone recognizes the issue many of us face.
Many don't understand that woodworking, and making in general, for someone with a disability often is far more expensive than it is for the average person. The reason being that often we require very specialized tools to do mundane tasks. Such as needing specialty equipment just to read and set a table saw fence. Currently, an absolute struggle for me to do even after testing a quality saw. The best option out there is a product called Rip-it Fence which is a new to market computerized CNC rip fence. An absolute dream and game changer for me, but, at $1000, out of my budget as I'm only a hobbyist. All that, just because I can't read a tape measure.
Money aside, I think the biggest issue we face is knowledge on how to even build and use equipment. If I can't see what you're teaching, how do I know what to do? Furthermore, how do I implement what I've learned while eliminating the visual aspect of the process? Try watching a woodworking tutorial with your eyes closed and the feeling is similar to that. It's tough to learn anything. Same goes for any other disability as well
Still, thanks guys. It means a lot to me that you keep us in mind.

I just donated and signed up. I was diagnosed with Lupus at the start of the pandemic and woodworking was a hugely important step to getting my mental health back and helping cope with this disease. Love that you're doing this.

Once upon a time, in a United Kingdom far away, there was a medical profession known as Occupational Therapy, i.e., therapy through occupation.
The therapeutic benefits of "look what I made" are not recognised because results cannot be measured, which is a requirement for proving that what you are doing is worth the budget.
Funding has been cut across the country for OT workshops. My workbench is made from the final lumber from the Aberdeen hospitals psychiatric services OT department; I also purchased the combi saw and dust collection.
Thanks, Jonathon, for opening your heart and your workshop. The rewards cannot be quantified.
    Derek

I'm a UK resident who has been disabled for the past 8yrs from the day my doctors told me I had to completely stop working my whole world 🌎 was turned upside down. I've been working from the age of 11 and that's all I ever wanted to do. I'm just about to complete my very first workshop build admittedly it's taken me over two years to do on my own ( major spinal problems!). Anyhow I wish we had this charity here In the UK. I've never ever done anything with wood other than burn it on a fire but honestly I've been thinking about woodworking for something to do and learn as I was going out of my mind for over 6 years doing nothing but daytime TV. Even saying that makes me feel crappy 😕. That said watching UA-cam channels like yours has inspired me to make the workshop and try my hand to learn woodworking. I recall the video you made and the mallet for Vlad, Super cool and a fantastic recipient to help go forward with his woodworking journey!. I just wanted to reach out and say thankyou from all us disabled folk even if I can't use your services. Anyhow as always guy's 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
P.s I can't believe you're moving shops again it feels like two minutes since you moved into that one !!!

I remember seeing your first video on this where you made the mallet for Vlad. I thought that was an awesome project and such an incredible, heartfelt, beautiful gesture. This is an amazing charity that you have created and I am beyond excited to hear that it’s been such a fantastic success. I am disabled but because it’s not something that can be seen on the surface so to say and it’s not something that people are familiar with I am often not believed that I have a disability sadly. Thank you for everything that you do Jonathan, you are truly an amazing person, the world could use a lot more people like you in it.

This is wonderful! One thing that you may want to consider is that most people in cities do not have the space for something like a gantry. Perhaps, when this gets rolling look to do something a little "downsized" so that a person with a single car shop would be able to host something like this. Maybe a small adjustable height table for those that are less mobile. Thank you very much for your efforts to help the needy!

    • @CowDogCraftWorks
      @CowDogCraftWorks Рік тому +1

Hey Paul. Loving the idea of an adjustable height table. We designed the micro workbench and the seated workbench with that in mind. We definitely note that the gantry is big but also as JKM says the plans are scalable downward… just not upward. So it can be adapted to smaller spaces.

I’ve been thinking of starting a UA-cam channel showing people how I do woodworking from my chair. I’ve Been building and teaching woodworking ever since I broke my neck 42 years ago. I’m not looking to make money from it and could be my way to give. Building a shop right now. I also work on machines, maintaining and rebuilding. I am a C7 quad.
