I've constantly been tweaking and upgrading different parts of my gear, and also getting used to and building experience with this equipment. As we round out this year it seems like the perfect time to go through it all and try to answer some of my most common questions!

I got hooked ages ago by your historic recreations, but I just spent a really pleasant half hour getting a practical up to date overview of current Sim Racing gear. I assembled my own set up back in mid-2020, so it was super useful for me to hear your views, and benefit from your experience. I have passed this video on to some guys who I have been helping to get started currently. 8:35 I highly recommend the Ricmotech load cell mod for the G27 pedals. Served me very well for about 7 years, until I upgraded my entire setup to Fanatec.
That's a very functional and well put together rig, I specially like the button box to the right. I also like the posters and paintings on the walls, very comfy setting just like this channel!
I'm personally designing my own 4040/4080 rig since we don't have much good quality variety here in my country and I'd rather spend the same amount of money for something that's of better quality than the overpriced crap they sell here.
Hello Jake. You're such a nice guy. Thank you for the great content this year. I always enjoy watching your videos. Even though I'm not a big fan of the rallye content. The head-to-head races are much more exciting to watch. But there are certainly enough fans who are into the rallye content.

An excellent, approachable rig tour Jake. Not brief nor too detailed. The treadmill carpet is a neat idea that I'm gonna adopt. And I love my Sprint pedals too, their adjustability is terrific but can be fiddly - the metal bits are bulletproof, but use care on the connectors on the brake PCB. They aren't armored or particularly well strain-reliefed, as I found out the hard way. And yeah, they were the biggest impact on lap times and the brake threshold-feel in sims. Like a DDwheel, you gotta have a rig to mount them in...

Using a desk for years only makes you appreciate a dedicated sim rig in regards to how economical it is having not to keep removing the wheel and and cables. Unfortunately in my case it had a negative effect on me for some years, put me off doing any racing because the aggravation. Bought a full on profile rig, simagic base just recently after scrimping and saving but i moved to VR because of space, it didn't alleviate the annoyance of moving the wheel off the desk, now i have to deal with VR menu's etc which is a PITA. As you mentioned doing long sessions isn't comfortable in VR either, next day dry eyes, blotchy skin
But driving all the old Formula cars pulls me back in, my nemesis the GT ONE calls me back too. Trying to revitalise the brain by reading my old books and watching old footage (Life on the Limit) highly recommend. Your content also helped me stick with it, also get into RBR as WRC 23 doesn't support VR. You are a purist of racing no matter what the hardware you use, on or off the games 🏁

Great video, Jake. I particularly appreciate the chronological updates that you have made over the years. I bought my first Fanatec wheel and pedals in 2009 and they still work faultlessly. Eight years ago I designed and built my own ‘Lotus 72’ rig from wood (complete with JPS livery and actual vintage insignia 😂), and it still serves me well to this day. I upgraded to the 8Nm CSLDD when it was released but, like you, still prefer to run at low levels of FFB. Thanks again, and please keep us updated of any further improvements.

Great video, I very recently (3 days ago!) put the same monitor on my rig, and I'm very pleased with it so far. Coming from a 49 inch ultrawide with a poor pixel response, this Gigabyte model has been superb with virtually no ghosting or motion blur - something I've come to realise is as vital for sim racing as high frame rates. I'm also surprisingly not missing the extra width of the 49" when driving, a good chunk of the screen was only displaying the A pillar of the car anyway!

It transforms the immersion. The ffb of the wheel seems less important. Saving for dd base now. Looking forward to the new year of videos.

Hey! Awesome stuff for your channel that I subbed, and joined! I was really into sim racing back in the day. Nowadays, I turn 70 this year and I blew out a lower disc in my back ... so I am getting back into sim racing. I have a totally bizarre setup in the living room, but it works I will be making a video on my setup real soon for my channel.. I used your "how to install GPL" and man oh man. back in the GPL seat again. Thank so much. I also am now driving Assetto Corsa, and a new wheel is being delivered in 2 days, looks like I'll be spending much time drivin agin!! 😎

Very good informative video. I really like the sequential shifter & it's on my list. I have the same chassis from Next Level Racing. I only SIM race on weekends due to work & family commitments. Not complaining just the wonderful life I've designed. Keep up the great content. The historic context you share is probably what enjoy the most. Happy Holidays!

I particularly enjoy Jake's review video's where he clearly puts in a great deal of effort so that there is interesting background information in relation to the track or car that is the subject of the video. The videos are so well crafted including the choice of background music which perfectly complements the subject matter. They are both informative and entertaining and it clearly shows that it is done for the sheer love of it.
Its really pleasing that Jake (finally!) has the sort of hardware that he deserves. Well done Jake & carry on the great work.
Thanks for showing your setup, excellent tips on what components are most important for a enjoyable experience and what is not so important. Yes, the headset mic is lower quality and no one cares because when you switch from the main mic to headset its as if you're talking on a helmet mic and in the drivers seat (even more immersion).
Oh man, its so refreshing to see a successful sim racing youtuber who kinda thinks the same way i do. I just upgraded to the same dd wheel base. But i just cant justify spending $10,000+ dollars on sim racing. I dont want triple screens or vr. Just a nice setup with a nice monitor. And im happy. Love your channel. I like how you dont just race cars but you tell the history of some of the races, the cars and the drivers. Your passion for all thing motorsports really comes through and its fun to watch. Keep doing what youre doing. Its always fun watching your videos.

It's refreshing to see that you have a sensible, well thought out sim rig (well, except for the wheel rims 😀) and it's eerily similar to what I have. I do use VR, but I've invested in a 34 inch ultrawide because VR actually is a chore sometimes, for longer races or during summer heat. Thanks for sharing your P2 button lay-out, by the way. I might steal it.

On a side note, I am a racing driver in real life and while I agree that optimal brake pedal pressure on road cars is usually rather low compared to serious sports cars or race cars even. And there are obviously good reasons for that. But modern professional race cars like the Touring Cars that I race, are set up for much higher optimal brake pedal pressure. Depending on driver preference, it is usually between 70-100kg of applied brake pedal pressure. Which is a lot!
These setups usually do not have much brake pedal travel either, which allows for a maximum of feel. I absolutely love it and have my sim rig set up in much the same way.
Haha you use same type of QR that i use. They're pretty affordable so you can buy them for each wheel and swap wheels without screw/unscrew bolts, I did add some rubber pads in it as well. Also you too use an anti-vibration carpet. The rig style and geometry is very simmilar, except i have a ghetto rig based on g25 on a DIY plywood stand. Thank you for sharing this. And thank you for your channel. Definitely the best channel with exciting racing, passionate stories, propper onboard cams and great vibes made by music an voice. You glossed over the Logitech Ergo M575 Wireless Trackball mouse you're using. I hated using a regular mouse on a tiny pad on a keyboard tray. Now the mouse is stationary right next to my shifter and it needs no movement space. Highly recommend!
I love simplicity (which is harder to achieve than complexity). Regarding audio, side by side you notice the difference, but it's still good enough when you wear the headset. The main difference is the smoooth tones your voice has with the hand held mic versus the headset which sounds a bit tinny.
I'm sure like most, we mainly are here for the broadcast content. My own rig has grown so much in the 20+ years I've been doing this but it's still lacking DD etc. but that'll come soon. I do use triples but very cheap 1080's from reused systems and these are good enough.
The 2 biggest changes are 1. dedicated rig rather than desk, and 2. load cell pedals. I never thought the pedals would be as good as they are and took quite a while to transition to but the results are worthwhile. Still only T-LCM's but great for me.

The big thing aboutbt the DD wheels that can oump out 20nm isnt the strength its the overhead. Most of us run 10-12nm but having that power overhead and fidelity is what pushes it over the edge.
One other thing I started doing was wearing some cheap leather gloves when I drive. My rig is in my basement and it sometimes gets down into the 50F range during winter. The gloves make a tremendous difference in how much "wheel feedback" is transmitted to your hands. I even wear them in summer. Try it out!
OH props to you finding a Schroeder NASCAR wheel!!
I've actually used a Grant 14.5 inch wheel with a G27 hook up but I probably cooked it with the wheel rim. anyways I'm thinking od upgrading with an affordable wheel base that can handle the FFB and large wheelbases.
regarding the diameter of wheels; I started using a 350mm momo mod 69 for everything that is either a road car or an older h pattern car, and I feel like it works perfectly for anything from 80s-90s JDM, 90s DTM like the 190E, and similar car classes. Even group c works fine, but is on the limit.
I also have two different round wheels that I barely use though, solely because the mod 69 is perfect. (Only if you exclusively drive cars like those I mentioned or have a different "formula style" wheel for more modern race cars, most work well with those, if the wheel is about 300-330mm in width.)
I like your solution of "cheap" QR fitted to the Fanatec hub.

I bought that same vintage wood steering wheel over here in Germany and I got it for 40 bucks! It's amazing and looks exactly like the AC Cobra and Mustang wheel!
I was looking at getting some proper racing shoes to use rather than socks and while in the local department store, came across some surf slippers. Used for sticking to the surf board, they're light, breathe and stick to the pedals like peanut butter to a knife and only cost me $10 aud.

i only racing a fee hours a week i got a whole rig i have alway wanted a full motion rig from when i was a kid now i can afford it basically almost there too. i got the gt omega prime triple screen with castrer wheel moza r9 i do rally and started iracing a few months ago. i just love it wish i had more time for it. i got my son in to too
Nice and Heusinkveld should send you the Ultimates. Brake and throttle isn't that much different, but the clutch is probably still king in sim-racing (I doubt that the SimuCube active pedals are quick enough for clutching). IMO a stronger FFB is sometimes just more realistic and with Indycars you can't even get a base that replicates the true forces that allegedly can go over 40 Nm even in modern Indycars. Certainly nothing I would want, but even 15 Nm can give you at least an idea what it takes and did some races with over 20 Nm for workout. As h-shifter I'm using the Frex from Japan and it's IMO the ideal compromise between the ridiculous priced ProSimu or BHD, but still getting some satisfying mechanical feedback. Certainly far better than the Fanatec, but the Simagic seems like a decent alternative as well. They also sell this haptic motors for their pedals and I've heard it's easy to mod them to the Sprints. Tactile feedback is IMO a must and I'm using 4 shakers since 2016 and 7 at the moment. I also use a SimXperience GS-5 and G-Belt, but if I had to choose between tactile and this 6 DOF, I would pick tactile. The seat of pants effects from vibrations are like in the real cars more essential than feeling of g-forces, fake or not.
I bought a Simucube 2 pro this yr myself. And honestly I'm really thinking of turning down the NM's. It's just too much force after even an hr of racing. But, I'm always adding something to my 8020 rig too. Advancedsimracing has this new adjustable mount for your steering

Hi! Merry Christmas and Happy holidays! Nice setup and collection of steering wheels! :) I'm wondering about a wooden 15" steering, and wanted to ask you what cars are going to be nice combinations with that wheel. I can think of only the 250GTO and Shelby Cobra in AC... What else do you drive with your 15" wooden steering wheel?
It's definitely not in the 'affordable' category for now, but a FREX shifter has an option to lock out the gears if you don't have the clutch in. I think you have to have their pedal set and simsynchro installed, though.

I would be very interested in seeing what your ffb settings are, for example for the 1954 sport cars in rf2, remember the last championship ? for me those cars are terrible to handle well and I'd be curious to see how you set the csl dd parameters and in the game as well. but maybe that is something too personal ? I have my rig all set up for the most part but i cant afford a laptop thats any good and the one i had literally couldnt let me change my ts xw settings or anything especially to turn the saftey off so it doesnt pause what game im playing every time the wheel spins a little too fast. That issue is severely holding me back and i havent gotten to have any fun yet. One day ill get that took care of but man this is one helluva hassle filled hobby for me but hopefully ill get it all ironed out some day
I am new to sim racing, you got me into AMS2 and it's been absolutely great. I'm PC dumb but I did notice that the "sense of speed" in your AMS2 videos seem a lot higher than my own rig, is that a FPS thing? What is the difference?
Also the way you drive and talk is pretty impressive. I think you're a notch quicker than I am but at my pace I have ZERO brain power left to be doing any commentary. LoL

No trips is a mistake, VR is fun as a side gig never a main setup. Great video.
Nothing can replace VR.
Ergonomics (i.e. "comfort") is really critical to be able to endure longer sessions, both from a performance perspective, and from one of physical health. You can absolutely give yourself shoulder, neck, and back problems if don't pay attention to this aspect of the hobby. If you find yourself getting into it and wanting to spend more and more time behind the wheel, I think building or purchasing a quality, adjustable rig should move to the top of your list, before upgrading anything else. Just being able to sit in a "natural" relaxed driving position will likely improve your lap times over many laps as much as any other new gear might.

the sprints are the best pedals ive used so far.
I currently have the TM T3PA-Pro pedals. This is all-steel construction, etc. similar to the Heusinkveld, but uses a "conical rubber" insert to approximate a progressive "more pressure == more braking" feel. I kind of missed in the video where you talked about what you were using before. It's a little hard to pull the trigger on new brake setup that is > $700 if the benefit is only slightly incremental.
I have the Thrustmaster Racing Wheel Servo base and a few of their wheels, along with their shifter. Do you think the budget might be better spent on getting into some kind of direct-drive wheel setup (vs. moving to a load cell type brake?)
have you tried blue blockers for long term monitor viewing ?
think of a newish curved monitor ? they seem just a little easier.
When you go VR you never go back BUT, you have to get a 4090. I fiddled with cards stepping up card to card trying to reach pinacle performance. When the 40 series came out I said screw it, got the 4090. No more sub par performance in VR. You can now crank the graphics to ultra and maintian 90 or 120 fps refresh rates.
Hey Jake, i would love it if you would be able to share your fanalab settings in rfactor2. I tried the 1954 endurance sports cars mod but i find it hard to find a good force feedback setup on those amazing cars. i have a csl DD 8nm
