This breed is the epitome of style and elegance! The ears, arch of the neck, beauty of face, height of stature and deepness of chest make this breed the most breathtakingly gorgeous breed of all breeds! IMO, THIS is what a horse should look like! Show, trail, farm, English/saddleseat/western this breed like the Morgan does it all. Do I love the American Saddlebred??? You betcha. Amen!!!
I ride a half Saddlebred at my barn (though I ride hunt seat, not saddle seat). I love him, he is lovely and fun to ride. Very responsive. I love this breed, so elegant.
I keep Saddlebreds strictly for pleasure, now. I LOVE THEM!!!! They are extremely brave, personable and intelligent. For me, if it's not a Saddlebred, well.....

Great horses! They are so smart, and I say super intuitive to how everyone else is feeling around them and aware of every little thing thats going on, but willing to please at all cost.
The movement of the saddlebred in the last two videos is definitely the best in my opinion. It looks so much more natural and the horse doesn't look miserable.

My first horse was a former Saddlebred show horse. He was a perfect trail horse.
Forced to "dislike" your video, although I own and love Saddlebreds -- the superficial 'beauty' in the videos disguises the torture and abuse that many (not all) of these horses have endured for years to achieve that look in the show ring. A knowledgeable horse person can see which of these horses are being trained and worked to reach their full, natural potential using proper dressage principles and which have been abused to make them fling their feet artificially, wrench their backs and necks into a chronically tight upside-down carriage, had their beautiful tails surgically altered, worn heavy 6-8" shoes and chains (or worse) that have damaged their legs and feet to the point that they are in constant pain, stood for years isolated in stalls to avoid marring their beauty... Despite all of the mistreatment, this breed is so beautiful and athletic (like the Tennessee Walker) that the average person can watch these videos and never see the abuse it took to produce many of these horses. They perform DESPITE those handicaps, not because of them. Saddlebreds are beautiful, amazing, intelligent and sensitive horses who can perform at the highest levels of any horse sport and any so-called breed "association" that does NOT promote the mental and physical wellbeing of these amazingly gifted horses does *NOT* deserve your attention, admiration or support.
Saddlebreds have a limit of a maximum 2" pad including the shoe. And that size is only seen in park classes. No where near 6-8" that's a typical big lick TWH shoe. I think that's where you are getting your information from. Two very different styles of training and breeds. I would look more into your breed of horse.

With all this incredibly false information, I have an extremely hard time believing you "own and love Saddlebreds". Sorry. I own a proven Saddlebred show horse who is FLAT SHOD with regular keg shoes, no pads, and has never had her tail cut or set in a bustle. She sets her head up high naturally, I've ridden her bareback in a halter and STILL she keeps her head arched up like a swan, as the neck of this breed is conformation-ally tied higher up on the withers than others breed (they are born that way sketetally). Whether you show your Saddlebred in driving, Saddle Seat, Western, or HUS, they will ALL have their neck carried high because this is how they are BUILT. It's not forced.
She does wear chains on her front feet when in training, over top of bell boots and thus they never make contact with the horse directly. The chains are for noise only, to keep the horse mentally stimulated and aware of the rhythm in their step. It stops many of the 3 gaited horses from becoming "pacey" and keeps their gaits even.
While abuse can happen, it's extremely uncommon and true horse lovers and lovers of this breed do NOT engage in these practices. And I don't know where you get your information from. Our family stable of Saddlebreds and Pinto crosses ALL carried their heads high without training, naturally, especially at quicker gaits. It was natural for them. The gaits can be exaggerated through training and through dressage draining but they also come very naturally. We never had anything 'cropped' or docked or altered. We never used anything to 'wrench' or hurt them either. Maybe research and celebrate this breed instead of shaming what truly makes them beautiful.
Sarah Angeles that's really only with Tennessee Walkers, Saddlebreds naturally have a high neck carriage and high step. Unlike the TW, Saddlebreds can NOT perform if in pain because they are a trotting breed. TW are a non trotting breed, which is the gait where lameness is usually presented in. And starting in 2018 new laws will hopefully prevent the extreme measure in TW'S known as the big lick that you are referring too.
Without the Morgan horse crossbred into the Hackney and Saddlebred they wouldn't what they are today and the same for the Show Morgans
Ive had various breeds, Morgan, saddlebred, quarter horse, & my current, thoroughbreds.
Each breed has its good points. Capabilities, and beauty.
The past years I've only stayed with thoroughbreds or half breds. I jump/foxhunt. The thoroughbreds/halfbreds have the stamina, & the courage to face any obstacle. 4-5 hrs of cross country galloping/jumping.
I can't fault others breeds as I know the capabilities of each
I respect each breed.
And it depends on what discipline you're interestec in.
Saddlebreds have boots on their feet to either keep them from throwing their shoes, or as protection against the chins rubbing and causing injury in their feet. The chains are there just for weight to teach the horse to pick up their feet, and the sounds they make help stimulate the horse, and keep them engaged. chains, and boots are over used during shows. chains are also used to help the horse learn to pace themselves.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they used typical methods in big lick like painful shoes. Why must people do this to their animals? Its not natural. Humans are truly a blight to this planet. We’ve destroyed dog breeds, this planet, abused animals, each other. Why would people need to overemphasize a gait that is a bit different than others for pure esthetic? Plus pulling a horses head in and up is so bad for their breathing. I’ve seen so many videos of horses frothing from the mouth after these measures were taken. Sick!
Will I say its beautiful? Sure but this is just wrong. Just because things have been considered “normal” doesn’t mean its ethical- much like slavery was and still is in many countries and some people will do *ANYTHING* to win notoriety and money even if its at the detriment to others.
There is no way to describe the hackney and saddlebred except that they are amazing horses and they horses have by far the most unique personality. I like them sensitivity of an arabian and intellegance but versitility to do just about anything. Social expressive horses! That care about the people who are working with them
If the Saddlebred gait is natural, why do they all have those boots and chains on their feet? Why can most of them not move their tails, or put them down?

mawmawvee Those are splint boots. They’re to prevent the horse from throwing a shoe off. Saddlebreds NATURALLY carry their tails like that. So do Arabians.
Saddlebreds are naturally like this. Although a lot of things are added to it for shows, Saddlebreds naturally carry their heads high, tails high, and are naturally spirited and sensitive horses that expressive themselves and respond to anything and everything. They are very attentive to their riders and care about how you are handling them, some are hot and spunky and need a confident rider, while others are sensitive and will take care of their riders. Saddlebreds love to please and are super sensitive to touch and pressure, this makes them in my opinion great horses. They are like a tb and arabian mixed into a whole versitale malable horse.
not only that, but they trot around the pasture in a very high stepping manner with NO training aids on! high stepping allows them to release their huge amount of pentup energy they have. I had 2 of them, fantastic horses, never want anything else.

When a horse whose tail has been set no longer wears a tail set, his tail will relax and drop back down considerably, though it will likely retain a "bend". It does not stay standing up. They can also swish their tails. That said, I hate tail sets and hope they will go away. All disciplines and all breeds use some extreme techniques, unfortunately.
So if other people do something cruel just because it’s expected, it’s okay for you to participate in your own cruelty? It’s amazing how people justify insane things.

@@hannahfitch8977 It's amazing how you are using accusations to avoid educating yourself. Perhaps you need to visit a Saddlebred barn and see how things are actually done. Many would love to show you how they care for their wonderful stock.
Actually it's the depressor tendon that is cut, the one that allows them to clamp their tails between their buttcheeks when you are trying to lift the tail to clean under there. No side tendons are cut so yes they can still swish tails unlike the QH who had all tendons cut so the tail would hang straight down like a rope for western "Pleasure" classes, as a swishing tail was points off.

When they outlawed Cut tails on the QH then they went to nerving. When they caught onto that, next alcohol blocks were performed. While we are at it, let's discuss hock hobbles and riding a horse into the ground via a relay of riders for hours. Or, for a quick fix, how about bleeding the horse so he is weak and tired and goes slow. I get so tired of everyone badmouthing any horse that can step over a corn cob when others have their own skeletons. Oh, and for all your natural people who want your horse to be freeeeee..... you all are the ones who call my farrier boyfriend once a year to fix your hot mess when you let your freeee horse eat his head off in the pasture till he founders. Good grief.
Actually the muscles at the downside of the tail root are being cut to achieve this look where the tail is held extremely high all the time, so they actually can not put it down... and that's not exactly natural. Of course that's decision of the breeder, and not all decide to do that, but... many do. I don't really see the point in doing that, though, I mean, they're beautiful anyway, no matter how high they carry theit tails, aren't they? ^^ amazing horses
Skjaeren69 its actually illegal to cut the muscle. Although it could still be done on the down low I guess. Most are put in a tail "set" only for show prep. When it is removed the tail returns to its normal carriage. Saddlebreds are not sored or abused the way people imply. Again it can happen to any horse of any breed. I owned Arabians for ten years and mine were NEVER abused.

Being in the horse world, & behind the scenes, these horses are abused. Built up shoes, cut tails, etc.

Clearly, mawmawvee, you have not been around them. They CAN move their tails, quite well. The boots are protective. The chains (only used in training) are NEVER used to make the horses sore (as with Tennessee Walkers). They are exercise tools, encouraging the horse to lift his legs higher. I have had horses that bumped their nose with their knees, barefoot, with no boots or weights of any kind.

They put acid on horse hoof so I think this is the most horrible equestrian discipline we can found and it's not natural for them !!!! Plus they put "shoes" and they weigh more than 3lbs is it normal ??? NO !!!
I'm not sure what Saddlebred/Hackney folks you know or have seen but I don't know anyone who puts acid on their Saddlebred or Hackney's hooves. That would sore the horse/pony and make them unsound at the trot; thus, they would not do well in the show ring. Are you sure you're not referring to the mustard oil/DMSO concoctions that have been reported in the Tennessee Walking Horses who are shown big lick? Also, never seen a saddlebred with 3lbs of shoe given that we have limits on types of shoes/packages given the division. Again, are you sure it's not the big lick TWH with lots of pads attacked to the shoes that you're referring too?
The problem is the showing of these beautiful horses has been a horrorific horror

To the people confusing the saddle seat with the big lick: They are NOT the same thing. The saddle seat is done naturally and the horses always have their ears forward and enjoy walking like that. The big lick is done with a completely different horse breed (The Tennessee Walking Horse) and they are sored, causing pain to their hooves and causing them to throw their feet up in pain. Their ears are always back and they look completely stressed.
I've been very active in the group fighting the Big Lick. I'm 71 years old and I thought it was a dying abusive "training" method back then. I was shocked to find it was still going on last year and no one.... not any Congress has pushed an anti soring bill through to prosecute and punish offenders .
Sorry I go to local large shows. Allowed in the stalbing area. These horses are mistreated. Built up hooves, tail muscles cut. Standing in the cupper to keep the tail up. Any time in the ring, their tails start drooping.
Horse people who show, even other disciplines, see the extreme practices used on these innocent animals.
Allow the horse be natural.

Those chains weight 2 - 8 ounces as a rule, and pasterns are lubricated heavily to prevent chafing. If a chain hurt them, it would show up as unsoundness and the horse would be disqualified from the class. The same with chemical soring - it would lame them and a lame horse cannot trot soundly. They serve to aid the horse in being aware of his body - it would surprise you to know, many horses aren't and just pitch themselves about - plus the horse goes against weight, that's his nature. So as sensitive as they are, these lightweight chains or leather bracelets encourage them to use themselves more and this becomes muscle memory. The double bridle is required by show rules as it displays the many months of schooling they have received to even be able to wear it. They are trained in a snaffle and taught collection before they are expected to wear a double bridle - it's not just jam it in and trot away. That's be a recipe for disaster! The curb bit cues for flexion and the snaffle cues for lifting. Frequently they are just worn as a balancing aid and to cue gaits as the rider frequently does all the cues with his body. If you are familiar with hunters and western horses, who are very slow and quiet, the fast pace and eager expression of these horses may seem strange to you, but if you observe them in the pasture at play they don't act much different. Perhaps a visit to an actual Saddlebred barn would be an enlightening experience for you.
