The pub opposite Balantines is The Southern Cross hotel South Melbourne, my sister was a barmaid there for many years, It's still there and still a pub, it's just up the road from South Melb Market, I worked at Balentines when I was 14 years old,
In NSW they closed at 10pm so in the border towns there was a great flow of cars northwards at 6pm and a great flow southwards at 10pm. Breathalyzers were not a thing in those days.
Balantynes was based in Sth Melbourne for a while. But the area has changed so much with Kingsway ripping through it and the elevated West gate freeway which knocked so much down in the 70’s.

There should be a test for all the new Australians including a question on how to walk down the street in Australia. Some train stations have notices or arrows indicating keep left but on footpaths it is every man for himself. I heard an Australian announcer on ABC radio saying he had never heard about keeping left. Fines for distracted walking might save me a lot of bruises. It is amusing that people who meander all over the place not looking will abuse the person they walk into for not getting out of their way.
