  • A quick demonstration of the YAESU FTDX101MP using DNR filters and Dual VFO reception.
    Also two YLs keeping me on my toes and a lazy dog that likes to break wind every now and then.

    Good grief the clarity of the audio is outstanding and those noise filters are extremely impressive. I have an old Yaesu FT2000 and "need" to upgrade this having just got my first "decent" antenna ie upgraded from a Cobwebb to a Moxon. Thanks for the overview - I was previously looking at the FTDX5000 as an alternate but your video has made me have a rethink. I cannot abide rigs that have menus within menus. Also in Yorkshire (nr Filey). Steve G4KIV

      Hi Steve nice to hear from a fellow Yorkshire man. I upgraded from my FT-1000mp so a similar situation. The difference is tremendous, especially the reception quality. Even without the DSP it sounds fantastic. Yes the menu is very easy once you have had it for a couple of weeks. I now navigate through most features without thinking about it. Still there are plenty of things I haven't messed with lol. You will be very pleased with this radio I can guarantee that if you are progressing from YAESU to YAESU. I do not regret spending the money and I have had mine for 14 months and loving it. Check out the AM DX video on 10 Meter band that I did it's featured on my Channel page. The audio reception on AM is absolutely amazing you can hear it for yourself. I got lots of recent videos using the FTDX-101mp where you get to see it in action on many bands and modes.
      Congratulations on the new antenna. You should boom out from Filey. The cobwebs are very good as well, I have one in the shed. An original G3TPW COBWEB antenna made in Malton. 73 good luck in your decision.

    Very pleased with mine, though I did have a hiccup on day 1. The "missing" filters arrived today so will fit them tomorrow, I figured that although I don't need them I will be keeping the radio a long time and will use them. (Narrow CW filter in sub receiver and 1200Hz filters in both receivers). A USB mouse and external display does make the menus far easier to navigate. Very happy with the connectivity, I am using a Raspberry Pi for my remote operation so far. 73

    Love the size! I've been using a DX10 for the past 6 months and it's a bit fiddly. Great performance, but too cramped for old sausage fingers :D I can see that you're not going to have that problem with the 101MP..... beautiful rig!

      @@M0YKSHamRadio I wouldn't go as far as saying that I'm loving it! lol It's more like a love/hate reationship but what it does well - it does AMAZINGLY well, so I let it off for having poor ergonomics.
      It is connected to a 28-inch monitor, but the rig's 5-inch touch screen isn't the issue - it's actually very good!
      The problem I'm having is that the physical controls are too small and cluttered around the VFO. I keep knocking it off frequency or hitting 2 buttons at once. The volume/RF gain knob is in a silly place too... bottom left of the VFO, so the VFO (which sticks out too far) gets in the way if you're a right-handed operator.
      The point I was trying to make is that 101 has much better ergonomics because it's a LOT bigger - which is a good thing. 👍

      @@2E0RME ok I get you, yes small controls are a pain in the arse lol I have a FT-817 that I barely use because its too small and crammed. Thanks and hope I hear you on the air sometime so I can give you a signal report. Hi. Same on both radios. 101 is larger but has knobs of 2 receivers so it still has same problem. I have used lock button because I also go against vfo dial. It's too big I think. Have you tried usb mouse with your external monitor? Maybe it helps little. I also have yaesu network interface box but it's not useable with radio in same room because it has 1 to 2 second lag. Tried straight CAT connection to computer with usb cable for CAT commands and small usb SDR dongle for waterfall display and it works nicely. 101 has 2 outputs per channel. Only thing is software must send freq commands over usb to change freq on radio when changing in software.

    What is opinion on the FTDX-101MP, mainly the V-Tune and roofing filters for added quality of noise reduction and additionally the 200 watts, dual tuner and power supply speaker add to a better experience? If the V-Tune and roofing filters are not as helpful for added ease of hearing then the FTDX10 maybe the best choice?

    • @M0YKSHamRadio
      @M0YKSHamRadio  9 місяців тому +1

      I totally love this radio, the reception is amazing without the filters with the PSU speaker. I use the DNR and occasionally when required the NB. They work as well as they are supposed to and cut out noise amazingly well. I use the filters on minimum settings as the SDR processed signal is cleaned up really well. I have found the VC tune very useful when a very weak DX station is getting splattered by someone nearby. It works especially with the shift and width adjustments and DNR. To get the signal you hear in the noise to sound crystal clear this radio is incredible in my opinion. The tuner works well on all bands and it puts out 200 watts with no holding back or overheating. You can check everything with a lot of touch screen features - multi meter options. There are many different screen display choices you never get bored. The display is so large I have not bothered to hook up an external monitor it looks spot on and is easy to navigate. I have a couple of amps and used to run 400w with my other radio FT-1000mp but since I got 200w with a built in auto tuner I am up and down the bands so quick these days, I dont have to tune up any amp etc. The audio works very well so the 200 watts has been plentiful over the last 15 months of using it. I feel I got what I paid for a YAESU Flagship radio that has earned its reputation by producing this model. its ace! hope it helps you decide.

    Does this thing offer binaural audio, where the receiver shown on the left would have its audio directed to 'stage left', and the receiver shown on the right would have its audio directed to 'stage right'. Either two speakers, or of course a stereo headset. A left-to-right aural soundstage is not the same as simply left and right audio, with one receiver crammed into ear (which is too crude). Using DSP, create a sound stage, left to right (and more if you wish to get really advanced, up and down, even behind...), and present the audio arranged across the sound stage. It's such a simple technology (getting close to copy and paste DSP code), and so few designers take advantage of it.
    Even within a single SDR receiver, it would not be difficult to have multiple signals within the passband decoded all at once (multiple "BFOs" in DSP SW), and then presented aurally on a left-right sound stage that is aligned with the spectrum display. The human brain can use the 'Cocktail Party Effect' to separate the multiple signals.
    Crikey, it's 2023 already. Get on with it.

    • @M0YKSHamRadio
      @M0YKSHamRadio  Рік тому

      I like the comment but it's sounding more complicated than my crude brain can decipher lol the option for two speakers and two mic inputs is available with this radio. I only have the one head and single mouth 🤣 so probably not so useful to me. It's a pretty cool piece of kit but limited by my ignorance 😁. 73 thanks for your time and input
