Looking at the idealized art of fashion plates, nowadays you'd think 'there's no way people were actually shaped like that,' but then when you see a historical costumer in the whole getup and think 'huh, they actually kind of did look like that.' It's amazing what the tailoring (and surprisingly the shoe shape) can do to your silhouette.

@Sarah Bowmer yeah, the woes of fast fashion. Now people have to go on awful, injurious diets to physically make themselves look like how Photoshop tells them they should

Ive been tailoring historical man's clothing for 4 years, its amazing how clever these people were. We are SO arrogant that we have all the best ideas and the best tech.
I will tell you - NOTHING is better for walking the dog in the fields at 6am than plus fours, and nothing I mean NOTHING is better for being out in a blizzard than a thick wool cape.
And they were just as clever at silhouette illusions.

The skit at the end really made me appreciate how skilled the muppet performers have to be. The amount of emotion they're able to convey with body language alone is really impressive, considering how often the punchline of a joke is just a silent stare. You don't even notice how limited the facial expressions are until you have a person doing the same performance to compare to.
The outfit looks great, the amount of dedication you gave to making this as accurate as possible (both historically and to the movie) is really awesome!

The gift of seeing a male 'fashion plate' of that Era dressing & in motion is such a treasure. I'm in awe of your flurry of incredible research & work! I'm also now in awe of the Muppet designers who hit that much accuracy with so few resources. 😮 This was such an edifying project on all fronts! Thank you so much. 🖤

I remember you started this 'quest' with the question 'when did male fashion became boring' (and a lot of stuff about Beau Brummel). Well, certainly not during Dickens' time! Wowsers! So delightfully *bright*! We tend to see the clothes of this period, if we see them at all, through the black and white 'lens' of magazine prints. Seeing them 'real life' is a revelation!

I've never seen any A Christmas Carol films, but the original book is one of my all time favourites. I have a stunningly illustrated hardback edition that my aunt gave me as a child that I read every Christmas Eve. All of this to say, despite having no connection to the Muppets film, the reveal of the entire ensemble made me a touch emotional. It was reading the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mystery novels that really brought home to me how these layers and layers of clothing made sense because unless you were sitting/standing directly in front of a fire it was COLD and if you were/had been outdoors you were not just cold but WET -- even if you were in reasonable middle-class circumstances as opposed to the desperate poor.
I worked in an unheated factory for several years (in North Carolina), and I think that historic clothing would have been much more comfortable than modern blobby sweats that got in my way. I *did* wear a wool skirt over my jeans for warmth.

That was amazing! I know it was based on a Muppet not a Museum, but it was better than a Museum. Getting to see it made, put on, and worn by a moving human was impressive. BTW fav line ever, "I'm throwing blind here!" Perfectly expresses my emotional state after the last 2+ years of quarantine!

How do you look so handsome cosplaying a muppet 😭😭😭
Aesthetics aside - watching this series has been a joy because of how much time and care you put into each piece. Congrats on finishing the outfit!

A few years ago I cosplayed Philippe d'Orleans based on outfits he wore in tapestries and fashion plates from the 1660's and it cost me $1000 and took 9 months to make... and it wasn't even constructed historically accurately because I had a really hard time finding extant garments to base it off of (also I have very little experience hand sewing and embroidering). I want to get back into cosplay after a several years' break for college. I miss it so much! And this video has helped renew my excitement for getting back into it! One more semester and I'll be free to sew!

I like that 1840s silhouette, the tailcoat without the overcoat. It looks good on a lot of people including you.

It looks amazing! I am thoroughly impressed with your skills at both research and construction. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Also the Chaos at the end was fun as were the blue gloves as a nod to the blue character.

I enjoyed watching the whole series and the outfit looks great. You could wear the whole ensemble in regular life without anyone looking twice. It looks that good.

I hadn’t considered Pinterest as a research source like this. Thank you for sharing your research process and sources, it is so incredible to see such care and academic integrity on UA-cam!

You looked so completely wonderful in your final outfit, that I started crying. I am glad you are proud of yourself; you deserve it. Mine is no compliment to be dismissed as excessive flattery, either: I have a PhD in American History and have been studying fashion history as for decades. Round of applause to Nicole Rudolph for this incredible outfit!

I can totaly agree on that with you that as soon as you dont really have to find out anything anymore and only have to finish it the motivation goes down drastically.

Wow! So cool to see all these pieces get made, hear the history of them and then finally have it culminate in the final dressing up and seeing the full look! I can hardly believe people back then had such colorful clothing and interesting patters and just such a sense of style. It's been a long wait and it turned out great!!

You did an absolutely amazing job on every single piece of this outfit! I've always enjoyed Gonzo's portrayal of Dickens and you recreated a snippet of it perfectly with Abby. That was the icing on a very long and involved cake!

This was the most epic costume recreation ever. I have been in love with every video in this series and now I want to dress like a fine Dickens-era gentleman. Your effort and work on this has been incredible.

I still think this entire ensemble has to make the rounds of Dickens festivals. It's awesome, in the truest sense of the word.
