Ye same on my rs3, and it is also the exhaust flaps thats rattle, and very common problems that they brake. One of mine gives a failt code some times so it is on the way out.
Glad you got the centering kit. It makes a HUGE difference. The bolts are one-time use because they stretch when you torque them. If you see a torque value that's got an additional turn in degrees, it's torque to yield. Also, if you see a bolt that's a kind of green color, it's torque-to yield. Almost every bolt in the suspension is torque-to-yield as well and needs to be replaced.
The exhaust rattle could be similar to my 335i where the wastegate stays closed to warm up the cat on cold starts and when tuning you can turn that off and that sound goes away. I could be off about that but it sounds similar to mine when i put catless downpipes before tuning
Yeah same here on mine. Even the super basic flash tunes usually have an option to disable it. Disabling it makes basically no difference to your car's emissions, the cat(s) will heat up anyway, manufacturers use that and loads of other tricks to pass emissions tests which are usually around 15 minutes long, so if you can get the cats working fully for an extra minute, that's a huge difference to the test result even if it doesn't help real world emissions - Subaru's H6 has insanely restrictive headers that do exactly this, it let the car pass emission testing but they're so bad the engine actually loses loads of power as it starts pinging when it's up to temp.
The most common torque to yield bolts you'll run into are the head bolts and balanced bolt on a LS. When you pull the old ones, you can literally see the stretch. It's significant.
A lot of DIT cars have that tick on cold start, it is due to a double injection event on the cold start to help warm the cats up. it can be tuned out on a lot of cars.
My stock 2019 TTRS with 034 Cold Air Intake & Sunoco 100 octane with original Hankook tires with 20,800 miles on it ran 7.9sec & 99mph beating a C8 Corvette @ Kingman Az Street Drags on Oct23, 2021. I'd love a Stage 1 tune but my car is CPO'd till 8/25 and the warranty has value to me.
I enjoy tuning my Audi's and you selected a great tuner with 034 motorsports as they are first and foremost an engineering company and build safe, reliable tunes. Software isn't a workaround sensors to trick ECM. One recommendation... as I have sat through a couple of Loctite demonstrations.... you don't need to paint the bolt threads. Just a bit will do it, though not sure if red is a good choice in suspension as removing will likely require heat.
6:30 Pull the spark plugs and put a few drops of 2-cycle oil in each cylinder. The exhaust will smoke for about 30 seconds and you can see the exhaust leaks. I accidentally discovered this while doing a wet compression check.
its 100% the wastegate rattle, it happens on warm up and light throttle (you will hear it more with a downpipe). I think that 034 tunes it out. On ttrs rs3, the wastegate is normally open and close to make boost.
Hey Collete, while I do not have a ton of experience on the TTRS platform. I can tell you this. I’ve worked on a lot of European cars and they tend to have a common feature that causes this rattling noise. It’s called a catalytic converter warm-up sequence. Some call it start up roar. I see a lot of comments about wastegate rattle which frankly I would find hard to believe on a brand new car. On many tuning platforms such as BMW this can be actively turned off so that the car does not go through this sequence. I would talk to your tuning company and ask them if there is an option for turning it off. my BMW did the same exact thing after I put an exhaust on it particularly deleting the catalytic converter.
my MINI JCW F56 (2.0T BMW engine) also has a rattle like that while cold start after installing a 200cell sport cat. I mostly hear it when the engine is cold and accelerating (normal) in low RPM. Do you think it can be the wastegate in that case?
@@gedam131 might be, especially if u had a super quiet exhaust before this. If it is, it shouldn't be a problem. Do u hear it through out the coldstart or only as soon as u start it?
Wastegate rattle. My rs3 sounds exactly the same on cold starts. I heard ppl running ds1 software are able to tune it out with a custom tune but thats about it.
You will love the o34 subframe bolts. Your "exhaust leak" is the waste gate rattle with the stock turbo. It can be tuned out and sound 99% better. DS1 is usually the best way to go to get rid of that pesky rattle. Car looks awesome and runs good! But you are doing your research just as all of us have and figuring things out. Good work!
you and Adam are perfect for each other, you both do the "it's the new daily, i'll keep it stock" and 2 days later "i got 30 mods planned and ordered, and on the way for the car" XD
My friends dad had one of the original TT's that would lose control and kill people. Part of the fix on it was to remove the subframe bolts and retorque them as the subframes weren't always on straight. The other solution was to add the flipper spoiler.
I had the 8n TT for about 14 years, remove the spoiler and nothing happpend Never heart, that subframe bolts killed people on the 8n.......sounds very superstitious to me..... Audi upgarted the 2000 model year with a stiffer suspension and added ESP. But there was no need for an upgrade on the older ones, neither the spoiler or the ESP. Only the suspension where on an recall. And even so, you can remove the little spoiler on cars which where equipped with it. Only the successor TT , the 8J and the cars based on it......like Golf 5,& / Scirocco and Beetle......had problems with lose subframe srews......TTY. But again, the didn't killed people.
@@tt-rs1457 This particular car would get unstable at very high speeds. The dealer wasn't able to figure it out so eventually Audi sent somebody to the dealer to work on the car. The subframe was the problem on it. I seem to remember the TTs being dangerous initially.
That noise on start up is probably the secondary air injection which runs for the first 20 seconds or so. It will make the car louder at first and it's to aid the car in warming up the emissions system.
that rattle is just waste gate that is pronounced when the car applies the electronic choke (higher revs) and only happens when the car is cold. Once the choke is removed, the rattle goes with the lower revs. When the car is warm, and started, you won't hear it.
Hey Collete, that rattle sounds like the flapper valve inside the hot side of the turbo. You could be hearing that like I did on my car because the V Band clamp where the downpipe mates to turbo hot side didnt seal right when I tightened it up. Mine was rattling because the wastegate actuator arm was loose, which was letting that hot side internal flapper rattle. It was pretty loud just like on your car. Im just guessing, but the sound is identical to what I had with my car.
If you have to tighten a bolt to a specified torque and then turn it another specified degrees it is an one time use bolt. They stretch and therefore cannot be torqued so you have to rotate them a specific amount.
Dang girl that Audi TT finally moves out like it should and that's just the beginning of what that car is capable of. I can't wait for you to finish all the mods on it. Adam LZ you better look out she's coming for blood
Sick ass Audi TT. Its crazy how much power those things can make with bolt-ons. but is it me or can you hear something fall and rattle off the car at 12:11 ?
Sounds great! But yeah that's wastegate rattle. DS1 can be custom tuned out. All you need now is a wavetrac LSD for the front since that is open diff and the Iroz haldex controller to manual ramp up and down the awd split on the fly.
one time use bolts have been out for quite a while, usually crank, cam and head bolts. Chances are you probably have them on some or all those cars you have so if you plan on doing engine work in the future on any of them double check before you take any thing apart.
I had a BMW M140i and the rear exhaust actuator spring broke or melted, causing the butterfly flap to to rattle. Also has a freind who has an RS3 and the heat protection rattled on statrup due to the 'rougher' statup procedure

It's the cold start for the DAZA - the RS3 has the same thing (exact same engine). It's even more prominent when running a catless DP such as myself. Goes away after 10 seconds or so and then all good to go.
Easy way to find the exhaust leaks (if there are any) is to grab a couple handfuls of rags and stuff them in the exhaust tips while it's running. Someone will have to hold them in there and they will heat up rather quickly but it forces any leaks to show up easily.
Is the rattle sound a secondary airpump thats only for warming the cats up and thats why its only cold starts you hear it. My Audi S4 has one and had to get rid of it when i did the exhaust.

The re-use of the subframe bolts is not as critical as other torque to yield bolts on there. If they were re torqued properly it wouldn't have caused an issue like the "by the book" police want you to believe... technically if you measure the bolt and it's in spec and not over stretched you can re use it... obviously if you have new ones why not use them but if you didn't have them and you know what you're doing then its not an issue

If they were re torqued properly it wouldn't have caused an issue like the "by the book" police want you to believe... technically if you measure the bolt and it's in spec and not over stretched you can re use it... obviously if you have new ones why not use them but if you didn't have them and you know what you're doing then its not an issue
