Beginner here and have watched many skinning videos, this is probably my favorite. You answered some details for me other videos kind of didn't clear up for me, thanks. I like the vice grip tip as well.
I always like seeing how others do their skinning even though I have skinned probably 2 thousand at least furbearers in the last 27 years ( hey, I'm no long liner, my biggest catch season was 81 foxes, 35-40 coons, 7 mink, a dozen or so beavers, 2 otters, maybe a dozen rats, and some possums and a skunk or 2 or 3). I also skin for taxidermy, and skinned a bunch of critters for another trapper as well. And people have been giving me their foxes and sometimes coons. We have a ton of red fox here and predator hunting has become popular. I like your method of skinning raccoons and will try it when I get more in. I have a friend who has 4 of them in a freezer right now.
Nice man! Glad u liked watchin! Jealous of the fox for sure I’m usually good for one or two a year and that’s it so awesome to hear that number of fox!
Nice demo! The only part that made me a bit nervous was pulling on the hide with the knife in your hand. I used to do the same thing and skinned a ton of coon that way until one day my hand with the knife in it slipped (got in a hurry) and cut my opposite knuckle deep. Not fun. Had to send the head of the coon off to get checked for rabies and then the next day my hand swelled like a balloon. Antibiotics and then everything was ok, but I learned my lesson. The vice grips for pulling the flanks I like. I've used pliers but even then I slip sometimes so I'll give them a try. Anything to save the hands can't hurt. Great job 👍
Thank you! I’m sure there will be a day I slip up with a knife but for now I’ve only cut myself once and it wasn’t too bad. Thanks for watchin and let me know how u like the Vice grips!
Hey Luke. I have to admit I normally don’t enjoy the how to process the win else anymore since I know longer do it. But I actually really enjoyed your instruction and the way you presented it. You actually are very good in front of the camera. Thank you for another awesome video. I am envious of your youth though. I can remember being young strong and in shape. Aww the old days lol. I really admire how how to earth and grounded you are. Not many guys your age are. You definitely seem to be a great guy. God bless buddy.
A pair of catfish skinning plyers work the same easyer to me. Since i am 50 would hate how short the clamps are. That's a lot a squats. Add a 2 foot 150 pound coil spring above your gambrel it will keep pressure so you don't have to pull by hand. Just put about 8 inches of stress on and that head will come easy
That is VERY cool! I'm stopping at Harbor Freight and grabbing a pair of cheap vise grips tomorrow and try that out to see if it helps my shoulder. I think on your real time skinning I would have lost a finger...LOL!!!
Like that set up, pretty efficient, i made a vise grip set up where I welded a d ring to it then a chain and a foot stirrup to clamp the hide and use my foot to pull it instead of my hands. Think I’m going to build a skinning machine 👍
Winches are an amazing time saver. When I first got into trapping before I had a winch I used a chain hoist and it works very well too just takes a bit longer
Thanks for sharing your system. I am a new trapper and cannot skin a racoon in under an hour. I tell my husband that I just don't feel like I have the strength to pull. I am going to try the vise grips and see if it helps any better.
can you tell me how i can find me a balcon bone market in or near Charleston south Carolina. i just started trapping and want to use all the raccoon pieces and parts. thanks great video.
I can’t go over my markets just because I work so hard to find them but I sell the pelt, skull, carcass, and balcum bone off of my raccoons. Nothing goes to waste just gotta dig deep and look around for someone who wants somethin
Hey buddy can you do a better and up close of the A&J skinning machine if you would please and also some measurements of it on how wide and how tall it is and even some measurements on the gimbal that holds the coon by its hind legs??? I’d definitely appreciate it and I no I’m not the only one out there that would love to see all that stuff that I just asked for also!!! And last can you show how you make a coon tail stripper also?? That would definitely be an awesome video on how to make a coon tail stripper for the new ones out there that are looking to get into trapping but don’t have the money to do so!!! Well awesome video buddy and remember keep up all the hard work buddy!!! Thanks in advance for any info on the skinning machine and gimbal!!
LMAO I never seen no shit like this and it made me shake a lil bit. haha reminded me back in the old facebook days where people would post gore photos to scare people. nice vid mate

Haha glad u liked it bud! I really hope that it helps ya man it takes a lot of strength aspect out of the process!
Tail Pullers. If You don’t have anything else, 2 Round Screw Drivers work good, 1 shaft on each side of tail grip both on both sides, and Pull.

Sounds awesome man good luck on the machine!

You need to get in touch with Vice Grip Garage about your use of your skinny tool. He’s country, he will get a laugh from it.

I can’t go over my markets just because I work so hard to find them but I sell the pelt, skull, carcass, and balcum bone off of my raccoons. Nothing goes to waste just gotta dig deep and look around for someone who wants somethin

This was another great video, and great tip with the vise grips. How do you sharpen your skinning knife?
I use a workplace knife sharpener. Believe I show it in my fur shed tour video
Worksharp
How much does a coon skin sell for?
Depends on the year
LMAO I never seen no shit like this and it made me shake a lil bit. haha reminded me back in the old facebook days where people would post gore photos to scare people. nice vid mate

A lot of free meat, you use it or toss it out?
