  • South Mainland, Shetland, is a narrow peninsula running 25 miles south from Lerwick. In this video we explore the archaeological sites of Scatness and Jarlshof, visit Sumburgh Head with its lighthouse and cliffs, walk across the tombolo to St Ninian's Isle, and listen to the poems of Shetland poet Sheenagh Pugh.

In 2014 I had the great Privilege of installing a wrapping machine in the Sandwick Bakery. I was on Shetland mainland for a week and had plenty of time to see some of the sights. Seeing your video has brought it all back to me. It's a place I could easily live, given the opportunity. I only saw a mere fraction saw watching your videos is a way of seeing mroe. I've been retired these past four years and my wife doesn't travel very well so it's highly unlikely we'll ever come and visit. Mores the pity. Thank you so much for the reminders and the history. It's much appreciated. (Nigel Crooks)

Many thanks for this. I am glad you have been able to 'visit' Shetland through our videos. Perhaps you will have an opportunity to go to Shetland again.

Where did/do people get fresh water from?

Plenty of rain, streams and freshwater lochs, so no shortage of water in the past; and now mains water.

Re St Ninians Isle isthmus - it is Tombolo and not Tombola.

Very disappointed to hear a loom described as a machine for knitting. Makes me wonder what other information is incorrect.

Actually there is no mention of a loom on this video.
