I agree, anything on open shelves means more to keep clean. I love the idea of just drawers in a kitchen and the dining area so it's out of sight, easier to access, stays clean in the long run.

I’ve gotten comments like that do you ever cook so I did a blog showing me cooking. I absolutely dislike a messy kitchen or dishes in the sink I will not go in there until it’s cleaned. The kitchen looks very minimal and clean.

You’re so right the problem with decorating with glassware and plates is always the same. It gets dusty dirty, the cooking oils form a sticky film. And then it ALL needs to be cleaned. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Totally agree on hiding the trash can & recycling bin! Game changer! I Wish I had more drawer space, limited on that, so I do have the stoneware crock out with wooden utensils! My pantry is a life saver for storing countertop appliances! I only bring them out when I am using them, they immediately go back in the pantry after use. Great tips Valentina!❤

We redid our kitchen 12 years ago. Open concept to rest of living space. We intentionally used closed storage, but installed a larger window to not feel closed in with upper cabinets. In-cabinet garbage. Small appliance garage for coffee pot, toaster, juicer. Special slots in drawers for knives. I have plants and salt and pepper shakers on cabinets. AND (not in your ideas) one very special decorative plate from Blackberry Farm that we obtained from our 25th anniversary. It is our artwork in the room. Also, the baskets and bins are wonderful in an enclosed pantry and cabinetry for organization. Labeled.☺

I have friends who use the top of their refrigerator for food storage, boxes of cereals, cookies, chips, boxes of rice, ugh, drives me crazy, I always have to look away. I compromised and bought an IKEA cabinet with glass doors, and keep my baking items in there in glass containers. I don’t leave anything out either, expect maybe fruit.

I hate clutter and open shelves of any kind. Especially in a kitchen No No NO! But, I would add closed cabinets wherever possible unless I had a huge pantry/butler's pantry that had extra plugs for small appliances. And, again closed cabinets with all the kitchen stuff can be neatly organized. Ah, my dream!!! I loved your wit and wisdom in this one especially!

I have all open shelving with only 2 upper seeded glass front cabinets. I display the beautiful dishware and glassware that I have collected over the years on the shelves, along with pottery, platters etc. It is done in an organized way and I love looking at my collections. Yes, it gets dusty on the upper shelves that I can't reach all the time but, I climb up there and dust it! My most beautiful things are behind the seeded glass cabinets and they look so pretty slightly obscured behind the glass. My countertops are pretty minimal, no appliances or utensils out, just a few nice plants so, that keeps things calm. One thing though, I could never cook with a big pot and plant next to my stove! Is that a faux plant? If not, how does it handle being next to a hot stove? And, do you mind if I ask, what is your countertop material? Your counters look so crisp and clean!

I appreciate all the advice you give, but know that some people like open storage because that is how they organize. The minimal decor works for me but my husband will not pull out the toaster if he has to look for it. I have my kitchen aid stand mixer out but I don’t use it on a regular basis. It was his idea and I want to put it away. Everyone has to decorate to their aesthetic and style.

*The Un-Cluttered Kitchen* . I have an oversized galley style kitchen with a tiny prep island in the center of a six foot wide space. It is "THE MOST" functional kitchen I have had in my 57 years. I have my coffee "station" on a tray, all other small appliances are stashed away. I do a small vignette next to the fridge to hide the exposed ugly and one on the opposite corner which isn't "work" space. I decant my dish and hand soap in amber glass. I do have a small shelf above the cooktop for daily cooking essentials and I do like having a magnetic knife rail. Visual clutter is a deal breaker for me, physical clutter is a dumpster fire.

When we redid our kitchen I also had in counter soap dispensers (is that the correct term?) that match my faucet put in and I feel like it really keeps the area feeling less cluttered too.

Your kitchen is gorgeous. The absence of upper cabinets makes it spacious, something I would love to do. Your kitchen aesthetic, elevated by art, is elegant, Valentina, with clean lines on a canvas of negative space. As for your kitchen design, I continue to like the wall units opposite the "U" on the window wall 4 years later.
Our remodel design encompasses all 5 of your suggested 🚫areas. Elements include portable induction cooktops replacing a stove, drawers in base cabinets, wall oven, wall cabinets & 2 pullout pantries. At one point the refrigerator was also put in our 🧺 room/pantry, but now the Counter-Depth with showcase right French Door is in the kitchen, instead of refrigerated drawers in one of the base cabinets. Timely video, with HoV signature style.l

I didn’t want the pull-out trash cabinet when I renovated my kitchen six years ago as it seemed a waste of space, but it somehow slipped by and was installed. Now I’m sold on it. P.S. When I was first married decades ago, we lived in the attic of an old house-48 steps up and the fridge was in a “pantry” off of the single counter kitchen.

LOL, one of many reasons I got divorced. haha. Every single time I went in to cook, I had to freaking clean the kitchen first because he'd go in and make a snack and make a mess and dishes in the sink (with the dishwasher RIGHT THERE) and I was just over it. Now my house is always clean with minimal effort, I sleep peacefully with no snoring nearby, and I can decorate however I want. Honestly it's the way to go. haha (Keep Jack though, he's a keeper, unlike most). I'm with you though, gotta put things in cabinets instead of out. I hate looking at the clutter and it's always in my way.

Your kitchen is very pretty. I love it. With you on decluttering/clean. I shudder when I see very messy, unorganized kitchens. Food prep can be chaotic and bacteria can grow everywhere in a kitchen. It has to be clean. All the homey touches are cute, but dust and bacteria have no place in the room where food is prepared. You have found a nice balance.

I don't have enough cabinets for everything so my utensils are out and my knives are in a block. But it just comes down to the number of cabinet drawers I have. Same with trash I have a combo trash and recycling out an proud.

I've learned I'm not an open-kitchen-treat-it-like-a-regular-room kind of gal. I don't want to have my kitchen on view from the dining or living areas. We have lots of cooks (and cereal pourers) in our kitchen, and there's no way everyone would be on board with cleaning as we go. Cleaning then becomes my job, or else a nag.
I don't need people in the kitchen when cooking is happening, either. We need to be able to quickly dump dirties in here when we have a small crowd over, and close the door until everyone leaves. I'd feel like I'd constantly be needing to excuse myself to clean clean clean.
Also, an open kitchen invites the "need" to decorate it, and maintain some level of current styling. A closed kitchen makes the out of style but incredibly durable granite countertops a good choice for decades. And let's marble get etched, stained, and patina-ed with no one to judge.
Clean and tidy--as far as I, the only person who cares--ok. But I want to be able to close my kitchen from view!

I'm short, I can barely reach the bottom shelf of an upper cabinet so I decided if I ever do have my own place, all upper cabinets must go. All I need would be 6 double size drawers for everything, apart from food. I used to like things out on the counters but over the last few years I've changed and now I try to find ways to store pretty much everything in a cupboard. All I have out is my water filter, bread maker and electric kettle and unfortunately the utensils beside the stove top.

Jack next time paint the package black and white and pop a Greek key sticker on it and you’ll be right! Love all the plants and art in the kitchen, it’s gorgeous. No to open shelves and yes to hiding bins. Microwave has to be at bench height as I use it every day. Love drawers over cupboards. No to drawers inside of drawers or inside cupboards. I find if one thing is left on the bench by morning it’ll have multiplied to dozens.

I even put my dish soap and sponge and spray bottle in cabinet after each use, so much nicer not seeing it all, it's not a big deal to grab it once a day and put it back. And I also make sure whatever left out is pretty, like marble salt pepper Sellars and a small lamp. I do not like open shelves in a kitchen but I understand why people do. My cabinets are closed. My kitchen is a decent size. I do have enough countertops to have some items out but I try to have it be things we actually use. I have my coffee maker on my counter top, a beautiful cutting board that my dad made that I actually use. I keep my bread in a basket and I always have a fruit bowl out for the kids. I have a couple plants on my windowsill. My artwork is near the kitchen but not actually in it because I spent a lot of money on a beautiful backsplash tile and I want to be able to see it. We added a trash can pull out when we updated our kitchen and I love it.

Give me Jacques Pepin's kitchen any day. A kitchen can still look good but the first priority in this space is functionality. Prepping food is often a messy ordeal and food needs to get on the table fast. Lots of good points here, but I fundamentally disagree about the kitchen just being another decorated room.

I do love how you don’t have upper cabinets or shelves. It is beautiful. I wish I could do something similar but we have so little storage as it is and no room for a pantry wall. 🙁

About to move & have been brainstorming what I want to do in the kitchen. I will have concierge trash so the can is going to be my biggest obstacle (but on the plus side someone else will be hauling the bag to the dumpster 😊). I don’t like things out to collect grease & dust so nothing will be on the counter that doesn’t need to be. And fortunately it has good storage (pantry closet) because I can’t stand to have things on top of the fridge. I only did it in my last place to discourage the cat from getting up there. Definitely looking for a prettier French press & towels & maybe a cutting board to keep by the stove for prep.

I like the big art piece in your kitchen. Far more appealing than shelves!

Sold our home and moved back into our 1/16th size loft...I cook EVERY Meal. Egads, we have no drawers. When I lived here before it wasn't an issue. Put it within reach on the counter. What is the difference? I have since been "House of Valentina-ized" 🖤
What does that mean exactly? PRETTY I want pretty! Trying to find things that can sit out (I NEED THAT MARBLE S & P set you have there!) and things that can be decanted, but some just "decan't be!" 😂 Solution, TOSS EM! Thanks V, you have created a more beautiful aesthetically pleasing living space for me! Even if only in my head! XO

I don’t agree with the dust on the shelf and let me tell you why.
Let me ask : is your salt and pepper out? People leave it out, uncovered, and have no problem shaking that right on their food. But they’re worried about a little dust they’re already breathing in all day and swallowing while sleeping or awake!
Turn the glasses over so there are no floaties. Set out only that which id used regularly and keep the dust off that top plate or saucer. No big deal.
You also slice bread and pour on olive oil and it sets there until people eat it, attracting dust. We don’t think twice about it.
Commercial kitchens also keep their plates handy.
Do not let the dust become excessive and zero the kitchen clean. Wash your hands. ❤
It makes sense in your kitchen to leave the cleaning supplies out where the husband and kids can see them (and use them) but in my home it’s much more practical to have the utensils and dishes ready to use too.
Let’s agree though on this: show the pretty stuff and hide the ugly things!

Valentina don't want to over fill my home and certainly don't want to see everything. Very calming.

As you look back now would you have incorporated some natural wood elements into these spaces? I’m loving the B &W style. I’m also thinking about the wall of black cabinets you have in your kitchen, I’d like to incorporate the concept into my kitchen in a similar way but have them refaced with a scandi look (wood) front. A wood wall accent, floor to ceiling cabinets housing all that kitchen clutter and using the same wood panel on the frig door front. What’s your thoughts.

Having lived in South America for 40yrs, I do not want openshevig! Our homes are often more exposed to the elements with unsealed windows and no insulation.Things get dusty, quickly!

In Poland almost everybody has trash can in a cabinet unden the sink. So typical and it is suprising when it’s not there 😊

I agree with everything you said except the under cabinet trash can. I feel like it would make the inside of the cabinet smell like garbage.

I have a big problem with storage. The drawers and cupboards are too small. I use a plastic shoe box for the large utensils and keep them in a cabinet under the counter. I still refuse to put them on the countertop!

Fun ! I live in a "big old house" and the kitchen is very small, but we do have a large pantry - so I don't have a ton of counter space - and I don't keep ANY utensils out (not even the salt and pepper grinders) One question for you...I do keep 3 towels out though - 1 to wipe your hands and 1 or 2 to dry recently washed items. They need to hang to dry - I don't want to use a ton of paper towels - so how to deal with your towels ?

I'm somewhere in the middle, I think. Not cluttered, but I do have a handful of utensils in a ceramic crock. I recently put my toaster in a cabinet with sliding shelves. We take it out now when needed. At first my family balked, but then agreed that we don't use it that much, and the counter looks less cluttered.

I drink coffee every day, and a Brevile cappuccino machine cannot be easily moved. My adorable Our Place air fryer is a toaster too and is used many times a day. A kitchen should serve the eating habits of the inhabitants, and it can be smart and attractive.
