    "Ariodante" - Scherza Infida
    Tatiana Troyanos - Ariodante
*Should read Recording 1991 not Live 1971 as on the title of video. Sorry for confusion.
-Special thanks to andrea585ny for her continuous support.
Ariodante is an opera seria in three acts by Handel. The anonymous Italian libretto was based on a work by Antonio Salvi, which in turn was adapted from Canti 5 and 6 of Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso. Each act contains opportunities for dance, originally composed for dancer Marie Sallé and her company. The opera was first performed in the Covent Garden Theatre, London, on 8 January 1735.
    Synopsis
Ginevra, daughter of the King of Scotland, is betrothed to Ariodante. Polinesso, a jealous rival of Ariodante, wins the confidence of Ginevra's friend Dalinda. With Dalinda's unwitting help, Polinesso tricks Ariodante into thinking that Ginevra is his lover.
The King, hearing of Ginevras alleged infidelity, disowns her, while Ariodante is reported dead by suicide. Polinesso then sends his agents to kill Dalinda, as the only witness to his plot. But Ariodante (whose suicide attempt was foiled), having met Dalinda while wandering in the woods, drives off the would-be assassins.
Polinesso, seeking to win the Kings favour, now offers to defend the honour of Ginevra in a tournament. In the combat, he is mortally wounded by Ariodantes vengeful brother Lurcanio. Ariodante, having learned about Polinessos plot from Dalinda, now appears and offers himself as Ginevras champion. The dying Polinesso confesses his guilt and Ginevra is pardoned by the King.

Tatiana was a superb artist with a gorgeous sensual timbre. I had the pleasure of knowing her and treasured her friendship. She was a graduate of the Juilliard School, from which I received a Professional Diploma in Voice and Opera. My wife and I were on vacation on Tortola Island and she was there. We thoroughly enjoyed being with her, for she had a lust for life that was that way infectious. Later that year we were in London, and noticed that Tat was singing the leading role of Carmen at Covent Garden, which we attended. Tatiana was a consummate Carmen, sexy and enticing!! To remove the cork from a bottle of wine, she pulled it out with her teeth and spat it on the floor. We went backstage to see her, and she seemed delighted to see us. Unfortunately, we never saw her again. At her death-for too young-the world lost a great artist and a wonderful person. May she RIP.

Nearly 40 years ago I saw Tatiana Troyanos in a performance of "Don Carlo" in the now defunct "Met Comes To Boston" series. I believe Paul Plishka was the KIng. I feared for Vassily Moldeneau (sp?) as he had to try so hard to be "loud", but clearly the star was the Troyanos. I commented to a friend that "when she sings one needn't know Italian to understand every word" I was commenting on her superb "body acting" and nuance of sound and gesture. I came away from the performance noting that I for the first time understood the difference between a "singer" and one who could match pitch. To have seen her in person was a transformative experience.

A beautfiully sensitive and musical accompaniment. The voice is strong and passionate but, of course, with a non-male timbre and with a 20th-century style technique, typical of many performances of the time, the kind of performance which many audiences still do not mind.

I have the score in front of me and the bassoon plays a melody that is not there. In the score you have a suspension at bar 10-11 and then down half a step for another two bars and so on until bar 17 where the bassoon plays at unison with the cello. Beautiful use of the Neapolitan chord at bar 81 with the word death ,which adds a dramatic effect, expertly handled by Handel has always with the A flat suspended in the next bar.You want to learn how to write beautiful melodies study Handel

I not only love the opera, and the singer, the great Tatiana Troyonos, but the program notes, which add so much to it. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to do all this and for sending them to me. Take care.

Debido a tu traición ahora voy
