  • Let's travel Quebec by bike! This video covers our cycling trip from Montreal to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu on Quebec's Route Verte (Green Route).
The first leg of our trip was a 17km ride to Parc de la Cité in the suburb of Longueuil. Parc de la Cité has picnic tables, a water bottle filling station, and outhouses available to the public.
The second leg of the trip followed the Route Verte for another 13km to Chambly, a city of about 30,000. Chambly is quite tourist-oriented with lots of shops, restaurants, and boat rentals and is home to the start of the Chambly Canal and Fort Chambly, both National Historic Sites of Canada. Chambly's waterfront also offers a nice view of Mont Saint-Hilaire.
The third leg of the trip followed the Chambly Canal for another 18km to the final destination, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is a less tourist-oriented city but still interesting to see, with a train running through the centre and an Oasis-themed public space set up downtown. Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu usually has a hot air balloon festival that takes place in August, but it was cancelled this year due to the pandemic.

I use this whole section of the Route Verte as part of my ride up to Montreal from Burlington, VT. It's definitely my favorite segment of the whole ride, and I enjoy stopping along the parks shown to snack. The last time I did it (which was a while ago), there was an exhibit of beautiful photos hung on placards along the path in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Anyone who does this ride should definitely take time to check out the old fort in Chambly. It's also just a nice place to hang out for an hour or so.

Great video. Something to keep in mind is that often visitors talk about "Route Verte". This was not a construction project to create these cycling trails throughout Quebec but rather a promotional organization that provided municipalities with information about improving and connecting existing cycling infrastructure. So from place to place the quality and style of trail varies greatly. Most of the nicest trails in my opinion are still on the Island of Montreal where existing linear features were used to create bike paths in the late 1970s. Those have gone through several iterations of improvements and are really safe and pleasant to ride.

30 years ago there were no bike lanes on the Jacques Cartier bridge. I had to use the sidewalk, not even sure there was anything more than just a railing.

I did this exact route in June during a 31 degree day. It's nice to see others do the same trip...from their perspective. This route has way too many speed bumps, so next time, i'll use the road.

According to google maps it calculates that it will take me 3.5 hours to reach St.Jean Sur Richelieu. But that comes to an average riding speed of only 17.57kph. With the Carbon Hybrid that I have I can maintain an average speed of at least 25kph which would make the trip only 2.75 hours.

I'm surprised you guys had such a hard time getting service in english in St-Jean. There's a pretty substantial anglophone community there because of the military college and they even have an english school. I know this because I've lived there for many years and I still have relatives in the area.

Not sure what gave that impression but we weren't looking for service in English...we actually moved to Quebec to get more practice in French.

The route verte is a joke, where I live they fix the car lanes but stop 4" after the white line..leaving the shoulders full of cracks and potholes. I end up cycling in the car lanes, getting yelled at by the frustrated drivers who never once rode a bike in their life.. I might live far far away from mtl, but they shouldn't call it a route verte when it's obviously not a bike friendly road!
