  • A "quinzhee" is a traditional Native American snow shelter developed for use in dry, cold-weather climates. A properly built quinzhee will maintain a temperature just above 32 degrees Fahrenheit even when outside temperatures plunge to -40 degrees below zero. Learn how it's done by joining Casey Anderson and the Grizzly Creek Films crew in the Yellowstone backcountry.

We made these as kids. Didn't know anything about them other then fun. They really were warm and lasted a long time.

The biggest quince I have ever seen. A big pile of snow should be done by tractor. Great job!

I slept in one of these out of necessity at age 9 and 10 in Vermont, MLK weekend 1999 and 2000 on a camping trip. It was -30°F

Thanks for the informative video! I made one to camp in last week. This video helped me out a lot, thanks! Way more badass than mine though!

I always shake my head when I see a movie where a plane crashes in snowy mountains and the people all use the aeroplane carcass as a shelter. A quinzhee will keep u warmer and away from cold drafts. Not to mention you can make one in a few hours so as long as there is plenty of snow you can travel to a safe location making fresh snow shelters each day. Create a little lamp from pine sap and you've got indoor heating and lights!

one issue in a survival situation is however, that making a quinzhee burns a ton of energy and your clothes are guaranteed to be wet as you're hollowing it out

What if all the snow came down upon you while you're sleeping.... buried alive?
It's a cool shelter but not worth the risk.

The sides are only 4-6 inches thick. If it collapses it is very easy to just stand up out of. Ive been in a quinzhee as it has collapsed many times

If you wait the correct amount of time, then it shouldn't collapse. Plus if you are sleeping in it, it's most likely that you have to choose between sleeping and risking burring yourself or freezing to death. It it way more likely that you will survive while sleeping in it. 😉
