Just fought a warmaul barb and applied your hand blocking tip. They had no idea why the maul wasn't working and we cluched it lmao, thanks for the free win Ryan
We don't have them up on the wiki yet, but here are the stagger durations in relation to impact power: Buckler: weak 300ms, mid 600ms, heavy 900ms Round Shield: weak 400ms, mid 800ms, heavy 1,2s Heater Shield: weak 500ms, mid 912,5ms, heavy 1,5s Pavise: weak 300ms, mid 500ms, heavy 1s I've heard people say before that it's better to have a Round Shield than a Heater Shield vs a War Maul and the stats confirm it. Since it doesn't matter if the the impact difference is 1 or 2 points higher, the stagger duration will not increase further, so it's better to have a shorter stagger duration with the Round Shield.
One thing you could've also mentioned is how the light/medium/heavy block interacts with longsword parries. Rapiers only trigger light blocks, which causes the longsword to be in recovery for a very short time. This makes the time window for parrying (by pressing rmb again) after blocking extremely tight and inconsistent.
Just a heads up: the blocking power of the buckler has been increased to 6. So it can stagger all weapon attacks (except for the war maul if the barbarian who is swinging it has the "Crush" perk).
Imo it's important to exaggerate your blocking angles in game - if its a horizontal/vertical swing coming at you, really lean into the appropriate block direction. When the game first came out I remember being trash at it, but after a week or two I understood the exaggeration a lot more. It's still difficult, but totally doable with practice/awareness! Extra tough in the dark though!

wait, could a buckler block a warmaul at the hilt and be all good to counter attack? It could right, because block power doesnt matter when blocking hilts? Great video, very very useful. I think shields are one of the strongest things in the game and people that say the combat is too simple, or something like BoC has no counter are just ignoring shields/limb blocking.
This makes me tempted to try out an agility fighter with a buckler and maybe a rapier or something. I used to run an offhand buckler in all my DS1 PVP builds to become a parry god and I can imagine the salty confusion at stopping a barb with a warmaul with a buckler lol.

100% sharing with my friends. Thank you my guy! We really appreciate you. May your loot be good and your fighting swift! (Any tips for the bard?? I've been thinking he needs a blue pot on spawn or a health pot. The sitting down to heal from his song doesn't really work when playing as him)
@TheHonestSage Not really tho, you get maybe 20 seconds of that healing via song, want to play it again? Nah gotta stand up and lose all the recoverable HP when you could finish resting for another 55 seconds. Kinda crappy, I'm for everyone else sitting to heal, just not me. (Edit) personally I'm not good enough to take no damage from mobs; usually I'll take at least one hit, and that 22 hp matters in my pvp fight, and I don't want to take myself out of the game for almost 2 minutes sitting there. (I get once you get geared/buy potions and stuff totally different) but starting kit, a blue pot or health pot would help tremendously in terms of not wasting my time sitting
@darklotus6595 ? I know this to be false for 2 reasons: 1) Personal experience. I usually like to run GC purely naked before hopping into ruins/crypts with gear and from my experience, you can full red health from from a goblin archer/ swing with just tranquility alone (which lasts 30 seconds, longer if you use rousing rhythms before tranquility, due to the fact it raises your resourcefulness/persuasiveness which increases song buff duration). 2) Tranquility guarantees 30 health return over the duration of the buff. It heals 1 per second and can be verified through google search! Though, I do understand the gripe, it can be pretty annoying to have to constantly make up for not having a starting advantage, however id have to counterpoint that with the fact we as bards get access to a free 15 extra move speed+ rousing rhythms and invisibility with SoS! In terms of solo play, we're a slower rogue without da burst which can feel a lil rough
thank you darklotus! Bard has been on the nerf side of the balancing in these latest patches so it is definitely tough to play. I would say to definitely take advantage of your ms and ranged options as you can usually kite any 2h weapon/full plate user and fit attacks in between swings. Right now I usually run falchion and crossbow and lead every fight with a note-skipped shriek followed by a crossy shot and a drum throw as they will be slowed from the crossbow. This usually makes it so you usually only need 1 or 2 falchion hits to finish them off. I can't give any song advise here as I really only played bard prior to the most recent patch so I am unsure how big of the nerfs the songs got but I know shriek is untouched so I included that one above haha
@ryan6daysaweek you're so very welcome my guy! I usually do open up with the weakness song, haven't thought about the drum throw after a crossbow. That's pretty good. Thank you, crossbow I feel is a must, he needs a bit of range dmg or you get clapped. Hopefully they change his healing song a little or give a blue pot or something. Thank you my guy! May we see each other in the dungeons and may the loot be fantastic.
The community you're talking about will never go out of their way to learn how to play the game better. The ones who will benefit from this are the "clowns 1 shoting new players in grays" or people who will become these said "clowns" through these tips. But hey, hopefully the feeling of being righteous here made you feel good at least.
I was fighting a Barb and just kinda brought him around small corners and when he did attack and I couldn't just dodge I blocked at the hilt. It's quite funny that everybody assumes the War Maul is some unstoppable force.
I just ran a game with shield slam on a buckler. Using your hilt block tech it was hilarious finishing people off with a slam after 2-3 hits from sword
Hey Ryan, thanks for making all this hidden stuff so easy to understand. Just one question. As some weapons with low impact power are incapable of breaking crates, barrels, and barricades, what are the thresholds for a weapons impact power against each type of material?
it looks like for crates and barrels you need to have an impact power of at least 3. Wooden barriers, pots, webs, and spider pots only need an impact power of 1 (torch).
Thanks, I was wondering why somehow it felt like I was being rewarded more for blocking with the buckler than with other shields. turns out, i only block heavy weapons and people's hands so i never can benefit from more blocking power
Hey Ryan, it would be nice if you made a guide for dodging all nightmare enemies. They seem to all have new attacks especially after the recent updates.
I didnt know the round shield had faster recovery than the heather, and breaking crates faster with parrying, actually game changing for me, gotta add these behaviours to how i play
Does the warmaul right click combo where the first attack entires with attacking with the hilt gets interrupted on a shield up close? I know the wodden part of the weapon is the sour zone in the war maul, however is the hilt still considered the sour zone when using the right click combo? I would love to know if i can us the right click to get through the shield up close and then come down for the over head swing for 120% of damage.
Would you consider looking at how stats from one player (Such as debuff duration or magical healing) affect other players when certain spells or abilities are used on them? When the cleric perk Protection from evil is used it shows up as a -50% debuff duration, however the debuff duration bonus stat on items will increase this number instead of decreasing it. Seems like it's either a visual bug or debuff duration bonus does not work as intended. I've also heard that magical healing only applies to the wearer and does not benefit healing spells used on other players but never really confirmed myself.
magical healing applies to any casted heal (whether self or on others). The debuff duration is definitely a bug as it should be a beneficial stat instead of a impairing one - I'll submit a ticket for that one
know this might be difficult but do you know/can you find out the min amount of ip to destroy crates, barrels and other breakables (other than barb who i think 1/2 hits all of it with base axe)
so how the figther's "perfect block" skill affects this? u suddenly gives the opponent the slowest recovery leaving them open for a counter attack like an infinite defense? Or it just nullifes the negative effects? On top of that from your Info I noticed the buckler could be kinda op in a skillful figther..
unless im wrong, it seems like most weapons hitting a shield have a recovery time thats about the same as the shield recovery time, meaning the only weapon that can actually take advantage of a long block recovery time is the war maul. Can any other weapons land hits on the fighter between shield recoveries? or no?
I haven't tried them all but if you are running crush these attack combos will beat the shield recovery: bardiche (heater, round), quarterstaff (round, buckler), zweihander (round), double axe (heater, round)
additional physical damage does not benefit from Physical Power Bonus but it will apply to any instance of physical damage as weapon damage may not. So in the case of the Bard's flute song +1 Additional Physical Damage will apply but not +1 Weapon Damage
It seems to be a set value at each impact power and doesn't follow a formula, so for: Impact power of 3: Barrels(4), Boxes(3), Barriers(3), Pots(1) Impact power of 4: Barrels(2), Boxes(2), Barriers(2), Pots(1) Impact Power of 5: Barrels(2), Boxes(1), Barriers(2), Pots(1) Impact Power of 6: Barrels(1), Boxes(1), Barriers(2), Pots(1) Impact Power of 7: It's the object deleter
Slight correction and possibly misleading, but the ability text for counterattack reads for 10% attack speed, not action speed. action speed is not correlated to attacking faster and is worded separately in most instances.
the ability text should state action speed - it changes the action speed value in the character stats for the duration of the buff which results in faster attacking. Checked it for the latest patch too
As a barrel smasher, Which weapons bust open the barrels and crates in 1 hit? If I recall correctly, green morningstars break crates in 1 hit, while a white or grey morningstar takes 2 hits. How can i maximize my crate smashing?
Most people opt for a bigger shield when playing cleric/fighter mainly because in order to successfully block any attack in DaD the attack actually has to hit your shield. If the attack hits your body while you're holding your shield up the attack will deal full damage as if you weren't blocking and the Round and Heater Shields cover a much more significant portion of your body. Actually having a shield equipped has a lot of other upsides and drawbacks and I would say that the only significant drawback to having a larger shield other than the slower recovery time mentioned in the video is the slightly reduced movement speed. Meanwhile the other benefits of having a big shield(mostly the heater shield because the Pavise sucks) include hugely increased AR and ofc higher blocking power.
the attack animation at 1:52 your hitting it with the butt of your weapon LOL so the atatck is ending faster its not interrupting this also happens with barb axes sometimes its not a feature of the shield or blocking it just resets after you hit something with the butt of your weapon as if the attack is complete
Very informative but a barb that is good with war maul would not body hug u to let u hit is hands hes swinging the thing wildly jumping and accelerating it into u with high dpi but doable just wouldn't try it as u will likely get 2 tapped
Your player becomes invulnerable to an attack as soon as it is blocked so no matter the Impact/Blocking Power relationship you will never take damage from a blocked swing. However, your player model can get hit by an attack before your blocking surface (shield, longsword parry, etc.) does. This interaction makes is so you technically get hit first and then later (fractions of a second) block the same swing. Blocking power and Impact power just decide what kind of stagger happens to both players on a successful block.
Ryan I’m curious how you feel about the state of dark and darker right now. I think there are many balance and loot issues but I’d like to hear your opinion

at this moment they do not but some of the skill tool tips imply that they will some day - I'll keep track and reply to this comment if that changes! Right now the only variables that control shield recovery time is they type of shield you are using and what type of block reaction happens

so how the figther's "perfect block" skill affects this? u suddenly gives the opponent the slowest recovery leaving them open for a counter attack like an infinite defense? Or it just nullifes the negative effects?
On top of that from your Info I noticed the buckler could be kinda op in a skillful figther..
unless im wrong, it seems like most weapons hitting a shield have a recovery time thats about the same as the shield recovery time, meaning the only weapon that can actually take advantage of a long block recovery time is the war maul. Can any other weapons land hits on the fighter between shield recoveries? or no?
I haven't tried them all but if you are running crush these attack combos will beat the shield recovery:
bardiche (heater, round), quarterstaff (round, buckler), zweihander (round), double axe (heater, round)
No mention of Perfect Block? It makes any blocked attack considered "light".
cool video still never gonna use my shield
top notch, as usual.
thank you zrak, I hope I can continue delivering the good stuff haha
great vid this helped alot
always the best videos from you.
I have a question aswell: Does Additional Physical damage scale with Physical Power Bonus?
additional physical damage does not benefit from Physical Power Bonus but it will apply to any instance of physical damage as weapon damage may not. So in the case of the Bard's flute song +1 Additional Physical Damage will apply but not +1 Weapon Damage
so if i stack 15 phys dmg and hit a barb achilles they will just die? xD@@ryan6daysaweek
Hey Ryan, do you know how to determine # of hits required to break an object given impact power? Thanks!
It seems to be a set value at each impact power and doesn't follow a formula, so for:
Impact power of 3: Barrels(4), Boxes(3), Barriers(3), Pots(1)
Impact power of 4: Barrels(2), Boxes(2), Barriers(2), Pots(1)
Impact Power of 5: Barrels(2), Boxes(1), Barriers(2), Pots(1)
Impact Power of 6: Barrels(1), Boxes(1), Barriers(2), Pots(1)
Impact Power of 7: It's the object deleter
@@ryan6daysaweekamazing, thank you for gathering this!
Can you do a video for the new warlock, magic damage scaling on the abilitys, cast times and stuff like that :D
Checked it for the latest patch too
@ryan6daysaweek interesting. It is worded separately for adrenaline rush too.
As a barrel smasher, Which weapons bust open the barrels and crates in 1 hit? If I recall correctly, green morningstars break crates in 1 hit, while a white or grey morningstar takes 2 hits. How can i maximize my crate smashing?
I probably miss something but what is the point to take bigger shield if you recover faster anyway with the buckler like you show at 4:56
Most people opt for a bigger shield when playing cleric/fighter mainly because in order to successfully block any attack in DaD the attack actually has to hit your shield. Meanwhile the other benefits of having a big shield(mostly the heater shield because the Pavise sucks) include hugely increased AR and ofc higher blocking power.
agreed with that kdog said
the attack animation at 1:52 your hitting it with the butt of your weapon LOL so the atatck is ending faster its not interrupting
this also happens with barb axes sometimes
its not a feature of the shield or blocking it just resets after you hit something with the butt of your weapon as if the attack is complete
this is to showcase the light block as the butt of the weapon has minimal impact power
Very informative but a barb that is good with war maul would not body hug u to let u hit is hands hes swinging the thing wildly jumping and accelerating it into u with high dpi but doable just wouldn't try it as u will likely get 2 tapped
This man has killed me more than 3 times. Please stop getting into my games, I wanna live😂
haha I'll look into this for sure

What block power does the Flute have? Its a flimsy thing but it does block and has a repost to boot.
block power of 3
Thanks for let me know. So the same as the long sword which makes sense for the reposte.
I have one single question - if impact power is higher than blocking power, then can you hit your enemy with this same attack?
Your player becomes invulnerable to an attack as soon as it is blocked so no matter the Impact/Blocking Power relationship you will never take damage from a blocked swing. However, your player model can get hit by an attack before your blocking surface (shield, longsword parry, etc.) does. This interaction makes is so you technically get hit first and then later (fractions of a second) block the same swing.
Blocking power and Impact power just decide what kind of stagger happens to both players on a successful block.
@@ryan6daysaweek Thank you, i was just thinking can i deliver any damage as a bear when fighter is blocking. looks like, usually not.
good job bro
Love your videos, love this game but still don't understand the blocking.
Ryan I’m curious how you feel about the state of dark and darker right now. I think there are many balance and loot issues but I’d like to hear your opinion
I was ready to type out a response to this but then another big update happened haha, I will give it a few days and revisit this comment! Sorry for the late reply!
@Ryan6DaysWeek, Does 7 impact power have more stagger duration compared to 6?
not at this time! It triggers the same heavy block reaction that a 6 would
thank you

How does impact power work in relation to a longsword parry?
Is anyone else facing this issue @5:12 where you constantly block after every attack without pressing block?
What does perfect block do i still dont understand
as of now it turns any block into a light block reaction
So smashing against the target with a shield is the best defense when going against a 2 handed attacker?
Buckler is underrated lol
Isn't the bp of a buckler now raised to 6?
you can block with bards flute
9 months later and still no weapon impact effect into longsword parries..
You forgot to mention the flutes blocking power 😢
fantastic info have a sub from me keep up the good work
Does agility/action speed affect shield recovery time?
at this moment they do not but some of the skill tool tips imply that they will some day - I'll keep track and reply to this comment if that changes! Right now the only variables that control shield recovery time is they type of shield you are using and what type of block reaction happens
