In early 2023 my son in law was looking to replace his 2009 oil burning Scion xB with a RAV4. All he could find in KC was a few used ones at new car prices. I suggested he look at Mazda which I don't think was even on his radar. He tried the CX-50 and CX-5, loved 'em both and bought the NA CX-50 because he needed the extra space as he's a new dad. Mazdas are the real quality dark horse of the compact and crossover world.
I bought a 2023 Mazda CX-5 NA skyactiv in Crystal Blue Mica and LOVE it! It handles better than any vehicle I've ever owned. Fun to drive, plenty of trunk space, high quality interior!
@mjngp Do yourself a favor & just go test drive one. You will know pretty fast if you will like it. There are a few learning curves with some of the features, bur I quickly got the hang of it & definitely not a deal breaker. Actually made sense from what I was used to. It doesn't cost a thing to go check them out, so good luck.
@mjngp Try to get 1 without the " I-stop" feature. You can turn it off but you have to do it EVERY time you start the car. A real pain !! Chip shortages made for some to be built without it. & check to see VIN #. If it starts with a J , it was made in Japan. Good luck
I have a 2016 Mazda cx-3. I'm in it right now. It has 199,746 miles with no major issues. I didn't like the cost, I paid 25k roughly. But it has had amazing reliability. Mine has a real parking break, not electric.
I have a 2024 cx30 NA love the car!! Love how the car is driver focused feels like I’m by my own and no one is around. All the features it has makes it worthy, My first car was a 2003 Mazda 6 fun little manual and I just had to go back where I first started. Also love that Mazda didn’t include any crap cvt’s unlike Honda and Toyota
I'm a huge fan of Mazda. Something of a sleeper brand in the U.S. but I think that's changing as more and more people see just how good these vehicles are. Really nice interiors, too. Like a car at the next higher price point.
Hello mate from Australia 🇦🇺 I’m on to my third Mazda, had a 121, then a 2010 and now a 2016 Mazda 3! I also have weather shield over the windows. The noise at 7:11 is probably from the weather shields.
I will pick up my CX-30 carbon edition on Saturday. I was a Toyota fanboy but their out of control prices and declining quality made me buy something else.
The first car I bought with my own money was a 2001 Mazda Protégé 5, with a 5 speed manual. I loved that little car, watching you showcase the legroom in the back seat reminded me about my first girl… tight fit.

@@gmorganhome Why? The Mazdas built at the Mexico factory nowadays are built to the same standards as the ones at the Japan factory. This whole narrative about Mexico built Mazdas being inferior is a huge widespread myth. At one time in the past there were quality control issues at the Mexico factory, but those issues were addressed and resolved. The operations at that factory are closely overseen by Mazda CEOs in Japan.
I'm a lot attendant/car cleaner at a Mazda dealership. The CX-30s are pretty and have plenty of power and good handling. I just really wish they had better visibility, personally.
True I have one as well. I probably overspent with the warranty but they’re very helpful at the dealer . They even sent me an Uber to the place I wanted to go to in the area . And funny thing is I have that exact model that Scotty is showing the carbon edition sport
@carverindian it should. My sis got a vw gli. It's about 5 or 6 years old now. Still going strong. Just an engine mount is loose and springs are done 😅❤
@@yournightmare9999 Changing the oil on time won't prevent the long term reliability issues that turbo engines have. Turbos create a lot more stress and heat on the engine components and that inherently lowers the life span of a turbo engine compared to an engine without a turbo. There's no way around that problem. Changing the oil on time helps any engine last longer, but a turbo engine will eventually succumb to the pressures and repeated heat stresses placed upon it before a regular engine will.
I bought a 2024 Mazda CX30 Sport Select model in the Machine Gray Metallic about 4months ago. Only put about 1,300 miles on it so far because I don't drive much. It is an awesome car. Shifts really smooth and it is nice to have the naturally aspirated 4 cyl mated to a 6 speed transmission. Interior is really nice quality for the budget too (faux luxury). Seats are super comfy. I got the car brand new for 24k even plus ttr. It was a steal. Glad to see Scotty approves of these cars!
My memory of Mazdas is actually not too bad. Had an early 90's Mazda 323 with a manual transmission, built in Japan. Over 200k trouble free miles before the road salt destroyed the body.
100% accurate. I've always said, " Turbo charge is for diesel, and supercharge is for gassers." The only gasser I think MIGHT have gotten it right with the turbo charge thing is the Ford EcoBoost. Possibly.
We have owned 2 CX-5 Madza's. A 2016 and now a 2023. Overall they are great vehicles. I agree, no turbo's for me. Amazing how many people don't understand what a turbo does to engine life, (but that comment can apply to many issues today). I agree on the trans as well, no CVT for me either. This car and my 2020 Ridgeline are keepers for a long time for all the reasons you state. It's getting more difficult to find decent vehicles at a reasonable price now, so much tech junk out there.....
I have a friend who is a farmer that has a 90s Mazda diesel pickup even though it is rusty and sort of rough shape it's still going and it passed inspection even though it has rust at some spots
I used to think Toyota is the top choice over any other jdm cars but god knows how I came across a mazda(which is cheaper option), driven over 100k and currently 165k miles on the clock, still running strong without any issue
I had a 2014 CX5 great vehicle I traded it in for a 2021 CX 5 and it’s even better. 2014 top of the line for its time and first year of sky active technology. 2021 Carbon Edition with a lot more features and much quieter than the 2014 and I paid the same low price for both vehicles. Mazda is building the best vehicles no matter what price range you are in.
I was shopping for a used car 6 months ago but people are keeping their cars longer and then asking more for them... prices have leveled out, but it's still hard to find an inexpensive good buy ... those Mazdas are hard to find ... don't see them that often ...
Show us how to check the fluid Scotty! These have dipsticks that are usable but you can't see them unless you move something and look down in. So many vehicles don't come with them any more and it is like a giant middle finger to anyone who wants to check the fluid or even change it or keep the vehicle longer than 60,000 miles. They made that part easy but sadly the filter is just the same as others and you have to mess with the pan to get it off. They use silicone sealant too and not all manufacturers do that. The positive thing about silicone is it is less likely to leak. The negative thing is it has to be cleaned off to allow a good seal when a new seal is made.
Scotty, the Corolla Cross is the comp. Both subcompact but the CCross is roomier. This is the carbon edition cx30 with the red leather seats. I like this car but feels tight inside.
Mazda was great before Toyota got involved, Scotty. Toyota's current pricing is waaaaaaaaaay out of whack (relative to value for the dollar) in recent years. Honda too - to a lesser extent. I'm sure Mazda and Subaru are happy to have those customers instead.
Agree, started shopping to buy a RAV4, ended up with a Subaru Forester. Less money and more room. As I studied dimensions online I didn’t expect that but the Forester had more rear seat legroom and the driver’s visibility is excellent. First Subaru, so far so good.
@@MutualistSoc Way out of whack. Just because a buyer has the abilty to acquire a 72 mo or 84 mo loan doesn't indicate wealth or wisdom. Often just the opposite.
@NVRAMboi People are financing $1800 Apple Phones every 4-5 years. A phone. There are Android alternatives that have the same specs for $700-800. It's not smart. But If they have convinced people it is worth it. That's the consumer's fault for being easily manipulated. Apple doesn't have a Monopoly on phones. So no one's holding a weapon to the consumers head forcing them to buy their overpriced stuff. I'd apply this too Toyota as well. Price it high as long as people are dumb enough to pay it. Then when it slows down lower the price.
Bought a Mazda 3 hatchback earlier this year. Made in Japan, regular transmission (as opposed to cvt), and more bells and whistles compared to the corolla hatchback we were looking at for the same price (plus we'd have to wait months for the corolla, which has a cvt). We're happy w/the Mazda. We also have an older Toyota that I'm happy with, but it seems Toyota's quality is slipping (just look at the new Tundras w/their engine problems).
Yeah, I've "issued a moratorium" of sorts to my family about Toyota lol. Still recommend Honda if they must buy new, but now I think Mazda deserves a look too. (I did recommend Mazda in the past, but they didn't like the 6 too much for some reason so went with another Camry)
Scotty, CX-30s sold in the U.S. are made in Mexico. You've said in previous videos that cars manufactured in Mexico aren't as reliable, especially compared to Japanese cars made in Japan (i.e., Mazda 3 and CX-5). So, doesn't that make the CX-30 no bueno in your book?
Back in the 90's I had a Mazda 626 with the CD4E transmission. NEVER buy a vehicle with that transmission. Not only are the junk, they require specialized tools to fix and when the transmission ultimately failed, shop quoted me $4K in '99 to rebuild it. Vehicle cost me $4,500 2 years prior. Didn't make sense to fix.
I had a 96 626 with the Ford transmission. It's the same one they used in the Ford Contour. The tranny went when the car had 60,000 miles and nobody could fix it. The car was junked. The 626 was a Ford/Mazda made in Michigan.
I always liked Mazdas. Heck, a 1987 626 LX (with fuel injection!) was the first car I both ever rode in and ever drove! (Home from hosp, and sitting on Dad's lap working the pedals, lol) Family switched to Toyotas after that - hey, it was the 90s, it was _peak_ Toyota - but their designs have done nothing but improve, and the Mazdaspeed cars were so desirable back in the day. Always thought a V-6 manual first gen Mazda6 was pretty much the second coming of the original Taurus SHO. Anyway, I'd still love a late-model manual Mazda3 (as late as they come with manuals). It's great to know their quality continues to rise, and that they continue (for now) with NA engines and real planetary-gear automatics. Mazda always knew what cars are about.
I have a turbo charged car. A ford escape. It's at almost 130k miles and still running smooth. Change oil every 5k miles. Run higher octane gas cause of the turbo and direct injection. Think I need to clean or replace the injectors though
Bought a ‘23 Preferred w/4000 miles for 25k. It’s my commuter and I love everything about it. It does have a bad blind spot but you learn to live with it. Excellent value for the money.
The 2.5 engines (non-turbo) in these CX-30's have cylinder deactivation. It shuts down 2 cylinders. Check the forums for information. I'm surprised Scotty didn't mention this??? Maybe he doesn't know??
I don't agree with Scotty when He bashes Ram & Dodge, but I do agree with him about cars and trucks not having any turbos. My 300, Challenger and Ram has the 3.6 and the Ram has the Hemi all naturally aspired. The new Rams with the Hurricane 3.0 and the new Tundra with the V6 are headaches. I keeping my vehiles until the wheels fall off. Especially with today's vehicle prices.
I've had two Mazdas from back in the partial Ford ownership days. Still have the younger one that is a 2010 made at the Flat Rock plant and still going strong. Both made it over 500k with little more than routine maintenance. Lost the older one at 735k to a wayward whitetail that busted the headlight and bent the fender above it, and insurance totaled it.
Now Scotty, you said 2 years ago when I was looking at Honda CRV style SUV'S that the Turbo in the 2022 CRV was OK with the turbo as long as you CHANGE THE OIL Regularly..!! I wasn't keen on the idea either but didn't like the Rav4 as much.. we'll see eh Scotty.?? Love ya..
I tested this CX30. Didn't liked it's cramped interior. It is good looking but Subaru's Crosstrek is much more roomy inside. They are both slow so just go with the one with better comfort. This Mazda 3 generation doesn't have multilink suspension either.
THE HONDA 4-CYLINDER ENGINE APPEARS TO BE SIMILAR TO MY 4-CYLINDER ENGINE ON A 2012 FORD FUSION SE. NO TURBO. BOTH ARE MANUFACTURED BY MAZDA ENGINE DIVISION. I GET 30+ MPG. I HAVE OVER 200,000+ MILES ON IT AND STILL DRIVING. MAZDA 2.5L ENGINES ARE BULLET PROOF. FINIS PAX
I don't think he has ever bought a NEW vehicle. As I recall he once said yes didn't about ten thousand dollars on vehicles including estimated repairs in his life.
I've never bought a new one either. I used to just wait and get a lease return or previous rental a year later with about 12,000 to 14,000 miles on it for a big discount. Now, I just buy older cars, because I don't want the extra "features" cars post 2010ish have on them.
Damn, I was looking at one of those but I'm not willing to take chance with another Toyota yet. My 2020 Camry was the worst new car I've ever had. Toyota wouldn't, or couldn't, fix. Saying the problems are normal isn't fixing anything.
😂😂😂... Hey Man I love it when you take out and throw away the plastic engine cover...jjjjj. Solo funny. Very good looking and highly reliable Mazda CX 30. Is a very good car. Well built,, Is a good choice for common sense people that don't need a Buss or a truck 😅
The V6 Nissan Murano I got for my wife to drive the kids around in is getting older. 95k miles so I’m starting to get nervous about its reliability. Considering a Mazda SUV to replace it with
6 speed auto and no turbo what like going back in time Mazda I love the interior quality and sexy interior if cx5 was little bigger would got it instead my rav
New cx 5, 2023 model owner with a non turbo engine. Guess what, it’s pretty damn fast. Zoom, zoom is real with the regular engine.Averaging 32-34 mpg combined. Good enough for me.
My only problem with the CX-30 is the EXTREMELY SMALL WINDOWS! The black plastic panels hide how small they are. It's 75% Door 25% Window. Literally Camaro sized windows. The only thing above the window line is your head not even your shoulders.
Toyota uses E-CVT not CVT. There's a big difference. E-CVT uses gears instead of the metal chain found in CVT. E-CVT is very reliable and has a superior driving experience.
@@NVRAMboi Not in a Sedan though in USA 2024 , just one option being the Premium H/B. I had to buy the H/B model in 2023 to get the manual. Bummer for me as I prefer the sedans.

Agreed. I got the same but a 2024. LOVE IT !!!
I was thinking of getting it myself and trade in my 2007 Toyota Yaris sedan which I've owned since 2010
@mjngp
Do yourself a favor & just go test drive one. You will know pretty fast if you will like it. There are a few learning curves with some of the features, bur I quickly got the hang of it & definitely not a deal breaker. Actually made sense from what I was used to. It doesn't cost a thing to go check them out, so good luck.
@@JanetVaughn-cm3et I'll definitely will, thanks for the heads up
@mjngp
Try to get 1 without the " I-stop" feature.
Have U changed the auto transmission fluid?
.... Mazda say it's a lifetime fluid
Have the same, mine accelerates quite fast

Toyota owns 5% of Mazda. You’re thinking of Subaru.
He's thinking of both if it gives him another way to brag on Toyota.
@@NVRAMboi Yes ... kinda annoying. Mazda's quality in the last 10 years has virtually nothing to do with Toyota.
Exactly because my family has had Mazda products for 15+ years. Great quality and value! Toyota seems to be the one having problems.
😂
Toyota owns only 1/6 of Subaru.
Traded in my Ford Escape for the Mazda Cx-5 recently. Best decision I've made in awhile. That Escape was a constant disaster.
I bought a lease return 2022 CX-30 last month. Love it!
Did they same thing. Great car. Amazing price on low mile, two year old vehicle
Heeyyy that's my ride. And I was driving a Mazda 3 2015 before. Great ride !!!
We have two 2021 CX-30s and love them. Zippy when in Sport Mode, 25+ mpg
No problems yet.
I'm a huge fan of Mazda. Something of a sleeper brand in the U.S. but I think that's changing as more and more people see just how good these vehicles are.
Really nice interiors, too. Like a car at the next higher price point.
I love When Scotty throws the "stupid engine covers" away😂
Stupid beauty cover...LOL!
I was reading this comment just as he did that. LOL!
😅😂
Engine cover
Nah he says "stupid beauty cover"
The CX-30 is more or less a lifted Mazda3, which is a GREAT platform to build off of (coming from a Mazda3 owner).
Mazdas are some of the most solidly built and relatively reasonably priced vehicles now.
I picked mine up Saturday as well. Carbon edition also. Lol
The first car I bought with my own money was a 2001 Mazda Protégé 5, with a 5 speed manual. I loved that little car, watching you showcase the legroom in the back seat reminded me about my first girl… tight fit.
Just got a Mazda CX-5 GS……no turbo, not hybrid….awesome car.
The Mazda made in Alabama in the joint plant is the CX-50. The CX-30 (made in Mexico) is considered a "subcompact SUV" comparable to the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda HRV. 🏁
Yeah, hard no on anything made in Mexico.
I just really wish they had better visibility, personally.
that's a problem with a lot of the cars today.
Yes, racy lines and aerodynamics dictate poor visibility.
True I have one as well. I probably overspent with the warranty but they’re very helpful at the dealer . They even sent me an Uber to the place I wanted to go to in the area . And funny thing is I have that exact model that Scotty is showing the carbon edition sport
I'm coming from a really old Volkswagen Golf looking for a modern-day hatchback. It sure is going to be hard to beat the Golf's visibility
Just remove the rear middle seat headrest and visibility is good!
I’m glad Scotty gave a good report on the same model I have with some more mileage. Makes me confident in my choice .
I bought one used and I absolutely love it
Mazda is owned by the Mazda Motor Corporation, based near Hiroshima, Japan. Toyota owns 5% of Mazda only.
As an automotive enthusiast I love turbos… as a technician I do not like them lol
Your opinion will turbo engine last 3 years plan on leasing

@carverindian it should. My sis got a vw gli. It's about 5 or 6 years old now. Still going strong. Just an engine mount is loose and springs are done 😅❤
@@carverindianjust change oil every 3-4K and you will be fine
I work at a Mazda dealership. Our techs have never seen a failed turbo on a Mazda.
Salt is such a trash excuse for snow cleaning.
my 2010 Mazda Speed 3 Turbo still running strong with 200.00 miles all stock
Shopping for a new car this winter and Mazda tops the list. Either a CX5 or CX50. The CX 30 is nice but the 12 gallon tank seems a little small.
I still miss Mazda pickups,
They probably still have them in South Africa.
I have a friend who is a farmer that has a 90s Mazda diesel pickup even though it is rusty and sort of rough shape it's still going and it passed inspection even though it has rust at some spots
B2200 for me... Bullet proof!
Mazda should introduce a pickup with their new straight six.
I just bought a 2024 cx30!
Too early to tell. It’s an S with not as many bells and whistles.
I’m turning off as much of it as possible!
Cx30 and Rav 4 don't compete with each other. The cx5 or cx50 compare with the Rav4.
Thank you. The Mazda CX-30 (made in Mexico) is considered a "subcompact SUV" comparable to the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda HRV.
I got the 2005 Mazda6 S Wagon this past weekend if you can still find one jump on it I love mine.
Our 2015 Mazda 3 still uses cable operated blend doors that can be accessed through the glove box!!!! Awesome little car.
I have a similar car ... 2015 Mazda 3 hatch with a 2.0L and 6-speed manual. 🥰
We have 3 Mazda, 1992 Mazda 626,2005 Mazda 3,2020 Mazda 2.
Cheap,fast no problem,drive fun ❤
I used to think Toyota is the top choice over any other jdm cars but god knows how I came across a mazda(which is cheaper option), driven over 100k and currently 165k miles on the clock, still running strong without any issue
That was a rolling stop Scotty
Are you a cop ? lol 😂
Toyota did not buy Mazda. Full stop ....
They bought 5.05% of Mazda's stock, so technically they did buy Mazda. Just not much of it.
When Scotty tells Us to stay away from Turbo cars, I still want an Evo. Dream car 😂
The best kept secret in cars today! 👍
Love my 2012 Mazda CX-9 with a V6 engine
It has 204,367 miles on it and still sounds like a sewing machine when cranked
I was shopping for a used car 6 months ago but people are keeping their cars longer and then asking more for them... prices have leveled out, but it's still hard to find an inexpensive good buy ... those Mazdas are hard to find ... don't see them that often ...
@@rickstevens1479 Mazda is a lot smaller than Honda and Toyota. They sell a lot fewer cars than the larger Japanese brands.
I think the rigth word would be collaboration, right Scotty?
Show us how to check the fluid Scotty! These have dipsticks that are usable but you can't see them unless you move something and look down in. So many vehicles don't come with them any more and it is like a giant middle finger to anyone who wants to check the fluid or even change it or keep the vehicle longer than 60,000 miles. They made that part easy but sadly the filter is just the same as others and you have to mess with the pan to get it off. They use silicone sealant too and not all manufacturers do that. The positive thing about silicone is it is less likely to leak. The negative thing is it has to be cleaned off to allow a good seal when a new seal is made.
love my cx 5, and i is pretty quick in sport mode. it impressed me with the 4 banger in it
Bought my accord in 2005 still driving it
Scotty, the Corolla Cross is the comp.
Not out of wack of people are willing to pay the price.
Rav4 here in Connecticut cost 54,000 the cx 30 save you money
Nice ride.
@@nthgth The Mazda 6 was a gorgeous car if you could stand back and just look at it. It's a shame it was discontinued in North America. ☹
Car is beautiful real value for your money ❤
(Home from hosp, and sitting on Dad's lap working the pedals, lol)
Family switched to Toyotas after that - hey, it was the 90s, it was _peak_ Toyota - but their designs have done nothing but improve, and the Mazdaspeed cars were so desirable back in the day.
You’re probably not old enough
to remember Mazda’s 1975 radio jingle/commercial:

Great review.
Good one Scotty
Only disappointment with this model is cylinder deactivation.. At least theres no stupid annoying stop/start…
I would gladly trade cylinder deactivation for 1 more gear

The 2.5 engines (non-turbo) in these CX-30's have cylinder deactivation. It shuts down 2 cylinders. Check the forums for information. I'm surprised Scotty didn't mention this??? Maybe he doesn't know??
Only the fully loaded top end models have the cylinder deactivation.
I was thinking about buying a cx-5 the 2018 model I like that it has a auto transmission not a cv and a 4 cylinder for fuel economy

Scotty is the best car guy on the planet.
Love ya..
Scotty is right about Mazda. They are great! I own a Miata RF and absolutely love it! I’ve had it for six years and had no problems.
I tested this CX30. Didn't liked it's cramped interior. It is good looking but Subaru's Crosstrek is much more roomy inside. They are both slow so just go with the one with better comfort. This Mazda 3 generation doesn't have multilink suspension either.
I wish they would bring back the Mazda B2200 pick up truck with 4 door and 4WD option.
FINIS PAX
Give the CX-50 a test drive. I`m interested in one.

Can’t afford one. LOL
Any Mazda is NOT a Toyota.

My only problem with the CX-30 is the EXTREMELY SMALL WINDOWS!
The black plastic panels hide how small they are. It's 75% Door 25% Window. Literally Camaro sized windows.
