- The Zumwalt-class destroyers are some of the most ambitious warships in the history of American shipbuilding.
The railgun, weaponized lasers, and the most advanced supersonic missiles are just a handful of the capabilities that were predicted to be on this ship. Even today, however, the fleet has yet to find a clearcut purpose for it.
So then what was the main obstacle for Zumwalt, exactly? Was it the ambition or rather the high cost? - Наука та технологія
As an electronics technology testbed, it's impressive. Considering that the vessel's stated primary mission, however, was fire support against land targets, and it ended up with two super sophisticated guns that had ammunition so insanely expensive that the Navy literally wouldn't be able to afford to fire them...yeah, that's a problem.
Zumwalt: even the Chinese didn't copy it.

It's odd how we test prototype planes before committing to many, yet we build several of these even though so much of the tech needed to make them successful was either unproven or ungodly expensive. What a colossal waste. Build one and shake it down before committing to several and wasting billions. The incompetence involved is not only extremely dubious, but hilarious as hell.
Just like any lousy and poorly designed product, it killed itself. End of the story.
Complete waste of money like the LCS class. They could have built DDGs for $1.3 billion each.
The ship is way to much cost on what seems as a test ship.
They be better off building Battleship and battlecruiser again, then Zumwalt destroyer with all problems they with them.
Building DD-1000 as a technology explorer is a good thing, provided that we can keep the Chinese from stealing what we have learned. They don't seem to budget limitations.

Sounds like this ship is an easy kill with an EMP weapon.
Get rid of the Zumwhalt looks like it's a 🍋 as we say it's always breaking down will it have a mechanical break down in the face of war? It's costing the American tax payer to much

The ship sucks! I knew from the start that it would not measure up to the other destroyers and cruisers.

It was sneaking around in the early 80s. Its a shame they are bogged down in bueracratic ass dragging. The incredible cost has given the tax payer absolutely nothing.

What the USAF was has been working onsince forever! Smaller misiles with greater power and range. Stealth, and better radars, and heat seeking equipment. My thought is after decades of work their misslie systems are going to make a lot of equipment outdated. No need to make billion dollar ships if you can wipe them out with a 100k misile from ranges unheard of! Even most aircraft, and other military equipment will be outdated soon enough.

Take the guns off, except the railgun, the adjust the hypersonic, and improve the laser tech to the smotherings. Modified the to many fail tech problems to 0. The super computer is rather to large. EMP free!, the bags to secure electric EMP Attack, something like so maybe heavy layers of that stuff, painting it, cells, especially for the pacific fleet. a little makeover. lockheed martin is is so cheap. money money money. Make the damn Patriot missile system in steroids, also THAAD whats wrong with you? s400 s500 they do have more air defence systems, both do make a purpose. I think we can do better than that, and t=e new missile is costly. You know what party can reduce that default of money from the Arm forces.
