Narhwal is pretty mcuh considered to be the "Anthem" of PGR. It was part of the first major content patch and it pretty much single-handedly saved the game during its somewhat rough launch! @@Samizard
the context for this piece is the final battle of the 12th chapter of the game, in which the character Lucia (the girl shown in the video) gives everything in order to get enough power to fight the enemy boss. But this power came at a cost... That's all I'm gonna say to not enter in spoiler territory. also, I already commented on the Lamia reaction which other songs you should check out, but I will do it again here: Narwhal Dust Puppet Song Under Dimension Revelation Last Resort Exorcise Structures Unknown Territory C.O.R.E. Industrial Strike
I see you're now falling to a new rabbit hole of OSTs lol. Definitely check out "In My Memory." It's a more recent OST but I also recommend "Narwhal", "Last Resort", and "Dust" for the older ones.
Context : Lucia(woman in the video)'s struggles in a chapter, lot happened. The most thing i remembered is when she fought a boss named Gabriel which was one of the coolest boss i've ever met in games, love him so much PGR's musics are good to hear without context but you cannot feel it. When you understand the context, it is really irony and beautiful at the same time, novel level story writing.
when she fought Qu its better than Gabriel becuz Lucia go all out with all the hope even if she die just to save commandant and we did lost her at the last moment
(a lot of *spoiler* of the fight for the new players but it is the full context for who want to know, please read carefully.) A thing to know, in this game usually the OST is for the boss, for example LAMIA is the boss of lamia and is HER theme, is all about her as we fight her, HIKARI is an exception. the context: Lucia (the girl in the photo) is something of a cyborg so to speak, she just got owned hard and she had to be sent to the base, when she wakes up she sees that us (the commander) is going to fight the final boss of the place and she wants to go and fight, in the base they gave her a new body that can fight even better but to work she needs to do a factory reset (so to destroy all of her memories) she accepts to fight and goes to help the commander. the fight starts with other OST ("nona ouroboros") and as you fight the battle becomes more and more heated until Lucia knows that to win she has to go all out, she turn off the parameters and speeds up the deletion of her memories, as she does the OST changes to HIKARI (and that is also why it starts so hard, Lucia is literally burning her memories and life as she fight), hikari means light in Japanese and lucia's name means light in Latin so this is her theme and it was the first time the game puts an OST from a character of our side, in a way it was to show that for 1 minute and 30 seconds Lucia became the boss of the stage. sadly as the OST goes to it's peak and Lucia wins her memories are burn out and she "dies" saying the last words of her memory that she didn't want to lose the name of the commandant.
Any reason to hear Hikari one more time I swear PGR has one of the hardest music in gaming in a completely different way from Doom or Genshin music Next listen to Narwhal, Crank, Our Destiny, Flame of Hope, and Exorcism (plenty more amazing music but start with these first). The variety is rather spectacular, yes in general it leans more toward EDM with some vocal but the style of each music is distinctly unique cuz they are made for specific characters/patches and each character has their own vibe so the music follows them and I love that so much.
For PGR ost, there was two type which for the characters theme/storyline and the boss fight music. They also have the orchestral style which is Sie Liebten Sich Beide
The character on the screen is Lucia. This chapter is centered around her. So spoiler warning. So basically player character is the commandant of the Grey Raven squad. Which consist of Lucia, Lee and Liv. In this chaper lucia is dealing with her past. Before Player take over the squad as it commandant. Original Lucia was part of the Old Grey Raven Squard. And previous commandant had dealings with some ascendant named Roland. He let his squad step into the trap to get killed as he was instructed by ascendant. But he did not pass the filtering and died Because only construct can pass it. Only Lucia survived. Human(basically world goverment) thought she was dead. And used copy of her MIND to make another Lucia(the Lucia on screen) as an experiment. (She was part of special program when she was turned into construct. That Program was focused on making copies of MIND but later it was shutdown due to being too inhuman and this was the only data they had left so they give it a try.) After discovering that original Lucia lost her faith in humanity. Then it turns out her sister Luna has become an Agent. So she joined her and went by the name of Alpha. On the other hand our Lucia didn't know any of this and In this chapter this info was revealed to her. They hid the truth because they thought she would too join the Luna. In this chapter Luna was holding Siege on Kowloong. To get the hauxu which is a super AI only second to Gastalt the AI of babylonia. So alot of factions was involved here. Eventually it was revealed Kowloong's leader Qu is a Transcendent and in her view only way for humanity to survive this apocalypse is by making digital copy of their consciousness and Living their rest of lift in virtual reality. We didn't agree with her and had to fight Qu. To save us(player) she had to switch to her new frame. Which was not fully ready and need collaborating. Which cause he to loss all her momery at the end of the fight. 5:32 So in the end she make different choices from her past self and became her own person. Also Luna manage to steal Hauxu and later used it to directly attack the Babylonian.
4:20 I like that you pointed that out, because in the moment of this fight in the story they're in a hurry, so it's kinda like a fight against time too. There's some more dramatic things happening, but to avoid spoiler, i'll just say that they add to this "hurry" motive, which is why the music escalates quickly and is full of this "giving all of me til' i'm out of breath because i'm fighting for what's dear to me" energy.
thank you for doing more pgr soundtracks! pgr has a lot of electronic-sounding tracks but they also have a variety to them, you won't be disappointed i recommend checking narwhal (us players like to call it THE pgr anthem), under dimension (my personal favourite), and in my memory! it's one of the more recent one and it's actually two tracks combined into one, which is why it's 7 minutes long. but it will be an experience to listen
I've been diving into PGR for the past few weeks and while there's definitely some Bloat and graphical issues(playing the PC version btw.) its been very fun so far. The fact that u get ALOT of A rank and S rank selector boxes as a new player also helps alot to get u started. This song is from the Kowloong chapter, a chinese themed city u have to battle through. Basically as you said she dies, not die entirely but just factory resets her 'brain" (MIND in-game terms) due to being overloading it's capacity during that fight. There's a reason they leave parts of Lamia - and most of the songs - open: they are used in different parts of the game, typically in the patch that the song is made for. For instance, Lamia's slow 'underwater' beginning is used in the menus, the 'intro' where the beat is introduced is used in regular fights, and the 'chorus' and big beat drop is used in the boss fight near the end of the story. They are purposely left 'open-ended' so each segment can cleanly loop during gameplay while also transitioning cleanly between segments in the complete song. Hikari is a little bit different because it's more of a boss track than a 'patch track' - the amped up beginning part is used for the big boss fight of that particular patch, while the second half is used not only in the big moment after that fight but several times after when the game's story gets dark/heavy (and it does that pretty frequently). There's other songs that are used for regular combat throughout the patch, which is what makes this one special - it hits you for the first time at the big climax of the patch, at the moment when the main playable character (the girl in the picture) has to make her big stand and give it her all when stakes are at their highest. The reason the song gets sad at the end is because there's a really heavy moment that happens immediately after this fight; I won't go into more detail to avoid spoilers, but it hits pretty damn hard and it's pretty well written. But suffice to say this is where the story of PGR starts getting really good, and Hikari absolutely elevates that moment using both halves of the song for different parts of the finale. But there are plenty of tracks you can react to, and they incorporate tons of different styles, from orchestral to folk music to eastern soundscapes to arabic influences to Doom Eternal-esque distorted heaviness - there's a lot of different styles that the artists utilize while still keeping a trance/electronic base. Hikari is another incredible battle track. Another commenter summarized it really well. It's a pivotal point in the story and it's meant to be emotional. Such an epic track. I'm a huge fan of another track, Dust, by GhostFinal
Funny you are saying "I know she dies". It's actually a bit more complex and interesting. The characters that are fighting are basically something between a cyborg and android. They are human concsiousnesses tranformed into data inhabiting mechanical frames. The character, Lucia, had to transfer her conciousness to a new experimental frame to save the protagonist, but doing so required to "factory reset" her conciousness, basically removing her memories from certain point of time. She can view those memories to "remember" them later, but as a 3rd party, not the subject. So it provokes thought provoking questions like "what it means to be human", or "what does make an individual". Is she still the same Lucia? Pretty cool, and a nice way to make a character "die" without them literally dying
Fck it's been a very long time since I played this games since my phone broke, and I'm currently using a potato phone that can't handle pgr BUT I still cried.
So without telling too much possibly, this point in the game is the girl on screen’s big deciding moment of her determination to keep fighting. The fight is purely out of desperation but with stakes that will determine everything about her future, even if her future only lasts for just a few more minutes. Do have fun with listening to PGR!

This is the song of determination, the composer really did a good job to express that emotion in it. Has been 3 years since i first heard it and had the same reaction as you😅. But i prefer another version which has a bit build up session for the starting part. (This one is not on official channel, it not fanmade because this song appear in-game too but on rare occusion😂😂) ua-cam.com/video/HLMpinuAkFY/v-deo.htmlsi=KbamZ9qT8-KrORSZ Currently, i'm attracted to Endless Path. Because its express how i feel right now. You can find this song on official channel. *You can ignore this part. I'm having argument with my friend right now. I think the vocal was voiced by the character herself, try to put their voice side by side and it will sound similar. I highly doubt that voice is Kinoko (she has deep tone voice) since i has been hearing VGS ost for 4 years now. I pretty confident with it. If someone got information about it, please share it here bcz i'm betting right now😂😂. I prefer we both wrong.
Hey Siri, what is a Narwhal and why is everyone talking about it?
Anyways, join our Discord server! discord.gg/fzRUaAZBT8

This is the song of determination, the composer really did a good job to express that emotion in it. Has been 3 years since i first heard it and had the same reaction as you😅. But i prefer another version which has a bit build up session for the starting part. (This one is not on official channel, it not fanmade because this song appear in-game too but on rare occusion😂😂)

Currently, i'm attracted to Endless Path.
