What's lost on these reactions is when this aired Janet was not publicized as being a part of this (close to the air date rumors came out but it was denied) so seeing Janet actually come out was a crazy experience for the audience and home viewers, that's why everyone was so excited in the audience when she came out. And especially because this was so close to his passing. The dancers she danced with were all top choreographers Janet and Michael had worked with in the past. They came out of retirement (some of them) to represent Michael. His was an amazing tribute, and even better when the surprise wasn't ruined.

I remember as a kid when Thriller was set to air on TV it was the biggest thing everyone prepared for it all over the world. We were all sitting around the TV 's waiting with excitement. Michael Jackson was like the pandemic😂. Everyone was affected. People wore Michael Jackson jackets, pendants oh and the glove. The world was MJ crazy. I remember someone fighting over him in school because someone said something bad about him. 😂 We loved MJ

Janet wanted this to be dance tribute from the dance community. That’s why there were so many dancers and not celebrities. Also, you missed Alicia Keys and J Lo talking about that Dancer messing up you could see them say he couldn’t get up right after
To add to this comment. It was also a thank you from the individual dancers to Michael Jackson. Every one of the background dancers Janet picked had worked with MJ, plus they only had a couple of weeks to put this routine together, so having familiar dancers was a definite plus. And the guy who put it together with Janet was Michael and Janet's favorite choreographer to work with.
Also, he didn't mess up the lean. There were notches bolted to the floor for the dancers to hook the heels of their shoes to be able to hit the lean. One of the choreographers said in a later interview that his notch came off the bolt when he hooked his heel to it. The dancer caught it and improvised. If he had not noticed right away and went on with the lean he would have fallen flat on his face on live TV.
I remember watching this tribute and I cried for hours
The dancers in this tribute are the former dancers for the This Is It tour that was supposed to take place in 2009.

Nobody dances like Michael. All these dancers are great, but they’re so stiff and nothing looks natural. Micheal was so smooth, thats just so hard to replicate.
