    For those of you who might have been curious about the Canon 470EX-AI flash that features 'Intelligent Bounce' capability ... and who might have been curious to know what my opinion of the flash is, here is the video review.
    As usual though, I want to make reviews more interesting on a wider level, so I went deeper into bounce flash technique. So there's something there for everyone who is interested in flash photography.

    Wow, the title of the video really undersells itself, this video is waaaaay more than just a review of a flash. I've been a pro photographer for about 8 years, and I still learnt some new concepts regarding on camera flash. Thanks for the video!

    I'm not much of a flash user, but I've never even thought of aiming my flash backwards. Learned a really good tip today thanks. Great review.

    Aww great video Neil! I had no idea that Canon had come out with a new flash and an intelligent one at that! I could definitely see it being useful if you are a wedding or event photographer. I love your black foamy technique which I use with white foam because I couldn't find black foam at the time and I hope to work on my technique a lot more. 😊

    Talking about f-ing up, last night I photographed a live showcase with music artists and a film crew providing extreme type hostage negotiation police lighting (I don’t know who thought it was necessary) in the front left of the stage (stage area is +/- roughly 6’x6’) approximately 2 feet from the artist. I shot to the right of the stage, at a low angle, bent down, using the left wall to diffuse the light because there was no whiteboard to deflect and redistribute the lighting. I think I slipped a spinal disc bending and rolling and using every yoga angle possible to get the right angle that captured a shot that wasn’t either over exposed, too dark or shadowy. Sadly, I wasn’t allowed to climb atop the bar to get better shots of the artists and the crowd. I realized how important the additional light is for photography and when I was able to get the right angles, wow the shots are amazing. It was a lot of work. I learned I need a compact 18mm lens and a flash. I will look at the 600 as you suggest! Thank you for making me giggle 🤭 when you said the flash fucked up! I love your videos!

    Hah!! I didn't even know what I was getting when I bought this! The head does WHAT??? Thanks for a great review and a great reminder of what can be achieved with on-camera flash.
    I picked up a used 5d Mk.III and 16-35mm f/4 L lens from KEH last week. Other than the point-and-shoot I bought when I was transitioning (i.e., being dragged kicking and screaming) to digital, I've never used a Canon camera. My main rig is a Leica M10 & 50mm f/2 Summicron-M but I now need tilt-shift lenses, hence the Canon purchase. I shoot flash mainly off-camera and in manual but I always appreciate a system flash that I can pop into the hot shoe for run-and-gun work. KEH had the 470EX-AI at a good price, so I added it to the cart.
    Less power than the 600EX, sure, but also less weight and bulk: I have a pair of Flashpoint eVOLV 200 Pro lights (Godox AD200 Pro) if I need to go bigger, albeit off the camera, and I may add a 600EX after I've built up the rest of the Canon kit I need. It's unfortunate that it doesn't include a radio transceiver (especially since the Flashpoint transmitter functions fully with Canon Speedlites and the Flashpoint strobes) but that's probably more than could be packed with the AI head rotation into that size. The biggest downside is that Anastasia wasn't included.

    Hi, Sir, I really like this video and the results, keep things simple, that`s what I like - this Canon speedlite concept is awesome, but I think it`s more for constant and controlled situations as seen in this video than for events for instance where conditions change a lot and one has to react fast, but I hope one can switch this mode off, so it`s the same with TTL and Manual mode, it`s good to have both

    Dear Sir: With your books I learned how to use and control the Flash, of which I'm very grateful. But today I was somewhat taken aback. When you move and position the white bacground to take 3 photos of Anastasia. Why do the three photos come whit BLACK BACKGROUND? Shouldn't they go out WHITE as the white background? Thanks in advance for your answer

    • @neilvn
      @neilvn  4 роки тому

      The white V-flats that I put up, where to mimic having a white wall there, since I don't have a clear open white wall in the studio. I also didn't want to bounce flash into the mirrored make-up table. So the white boards / V-flats there are simply to have a uniform white wall that I can bounce flash off to illustrate bounce flash techniques here.
      The background behind Anastasiya is a dark wooden room divider panel. It will go dark / black when not much light hit it. Hence, it appears black in the background.
      The white V-flats where NOT the background here. They are to my left, and to Anastasiya's right. NOT the background.
