Intel Optane is amazing for write life. I have a P1600X 118GB as my page file drive and for The First Descendant install. I initially bought the P1600X to fix a low RAM crashing issue from The Division, but my primary concern is longevity. A year ago, my benchmarking sessions (repeated restarts) ate 5.4TB of write life off my Samsung 860 PRO 512GB, which hit 99% remaining life, so the P1600X took the job as the 40-50GB page file. At the moment, 20TB+ written, and the P1600X is at 99% (Intel's lifetime writes is 1292TB). Optane is an expensive server product, but the endurance and low latency is outstanding.

@@NinjaTaco__ In my experience, the large page file helped reduce crashing when I had 16GB of DRAM. After I upgraded to 32GB, I fixed crashing from running out of DRAM and virtual memory. Now, the Optane is good for loading The First Descendant quickly. I use Optane for the insane write life.

I have a 1.6 TB Optane P5800X as my OS disk and 2 Predator 4TB m.2 I'm RAID0 with 2 partitions that are used for my SteamVR library and nightly Macrium disk images. I like this setup. The Optane was expensive but it will basically last for the rest of my life and has the best latency of any drive, I bet well into the future.

Here's what reviews with the T705 have yet to show; They are missing PC games that are built with the Directstorage API. None of the games shown here will have that benefit for the SSD. Please re-test your SSD runs with any of the four games with Directstorage API: Forspoken, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Forza Motorsport, or Horizon Forbidden West.

905optane last forever vs nvme 2024, and also way faster with primocache, also even wen 90% full, 905 is a winner, and im kinda sad Intel stopped it, maybe it was to powerfull who knows. P5800X is pcie gen 4 and again on another level vs nvme.

Yep, still rocking an 800gb P5800x for a boot drive + caching. Nothing beats it. It was a painful $1500 when I got it but I don't regret it. If you don't need that type of storage performance (database mostly) no real reason to use it. 905p is still comparatively cheap and what I would grab for a windows OS drive if possible.
Nvme nand flash drives will be sufficient in the overwhelming majority of cases though.
Gen 5 drive controllers run too hot. Need to wait for second gen versions.

3d xpoint was too expensive according to Intel, it's a shame they weren't able to sell it off to someone like they did the rest of their SSD business. I snapped up a bunch of p1600x's when they were cheap and prices have gotten down to reasonable for 4800x's so i'm going to grab a few of those for my NAS.

I bought the T700 last year. My ProArt 670E board has two PCIE 5 M.2 slots. 1 between the CPU and the primary PCIE 5.0.slot, and 1 at the bottom right corner of the MB sharing a large heatsink with two PCI 4.0 M.2 slots. Longer runs but a much cooler spot. Drive stays fairly cool in that position. The one between the CPU and the GPU or underneath the GPU will always be problematic for heat.

Insane is an understatement. It would already be an amazing feat if a 6-year old product only started loosing to current new products now...6 years later. Another thing to at least still manage to tie current products. An insane feat to still be beating current products 6 years after release. Well, Intel Optane doesn't just beat current products, it utterly obliterates them. Gen 4 and the best gen 5 drives are in the 80s and 90s for random reads, sometimes 100, and on a very good day, 110. Then there's 6-year old Intel Optane doing like 350+ random reads. Insane is an understatement.
Intel Optane feels like those documentaries & reports about incredible technology from 100s or 1000s of years ago that we still don't understand and/or got suppressed.

  • @lil_pai

I would love if you could make a video about the perceived snappiness in Windows and such you're talking about! I've been looking into optane for a while, but never been able to justify the pricetag... But if it literally makes day-to-day usage of my computer snappier and just more crisp, it might really be worth it seeing as there's basically no perceivable downside in gaming performance, and all other things are limited by other slower drives or networking anyway.
Would've also been interesting if you tried some direct storage games. Like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

  • @sxaccess2011
    @sxaccess2011 4 місяці тому

Excellent video. It's not "read speeds" alone though that suck...it's specifically *4K Read* speeds which are the bottlenecks with all SSDs. This is critical as the data stored on the vast majority of default configed drives/OSs all use 4K cluster sizes (and most files are 4K or smaller), so the quicker your 4K reads & writes are (specifically), the faster your overall performance will be. This is also why you want to RAID them (4 drives minimum, ideally 8...note the PCI4/5 bus will he bottlenecking all the sequential stuff, but all we care about are 4K Read/Write speeds).

The Optane P1600X 118GB is the best system drive. It has 2280 M2 form factor, almost the same random performance like P5800X. If you want more Optane storage go for 900p and 905p in AIC (HHHL) format. 900p 280GB AIC can be found around 100EUR. Bandwidth doesnt matter while consumer SSDs cant keep them for extended periods. However, running with those conditions on my direct die 10900kf and highly tuned dual rank B-die @ 4600mhz 16-16-16-36 and 3080 Ti plus nvme ssd still feels struggling. I just ordered 9800x3d to see if it could run better or not since it seems to be cpu limited in several scenarios.

t705 and gen 5 nvme in general just runs too damn hot atm... you need a massive piece of metal or even fans/liquid to cool it properly, && not all mobos that are gen 5 capable are playing well with recognizing the drive using the native NVME driver/controllers from bios... even the t700 has the same issue... you can find these gen 5 drives on heavy discounts currently especially at MicroCenter b/c no one is buying them, they are collecting dust bunnies in the case... even most after market heatsinks have trouble keeping them cool... your stock mobo armor is not enough for these pocket microwaves even the oem crucial heatsinks are a joke from the factory -- as jewfus even could not tame it with the oem heatsink he had to use that chonkus rog pcie card... unless you plan on sticking your gen 5 drives under water do not bother... sammy nvmes work in everything and the only thing they do well is chip/flash storage its what the rode to get to the top and they should just stick to what theyre good at bc their tvs and appliances and other junk they make aint it...
micron is trying to make a comeback but their drives are having growing pains lots of bad units and doa drives are popping up esp on the gen 5 side of the coin... their gaming/consumer ram outside of the server and notebook space, is poop as well... its getting smoked by sk hynix chineseisum all across the spectrum.

I bought a 4TB T705 and I love it. Overkill, but file transfers and game downloads are so fast.

Stupid idea, but maybe not. Install 256gb of ram, the T705, create a ram disk with 224gb of space, and make your game shortcuts as a script that erases the RAM disk, copies the game and then launches it. I’d be curious about loading times and FPS. It would be better than direct storage and be on every game.

lol,,, a 22 minute video to let us know what the PC community has known since PCIe Gen 3? That there is no discernable differnce? Even a budget QLC will give you the same indescernable level of snappyness, and TBH so will a $50 sata drive. The higher end NVME is basically just for transfering large data to and from high end SSDs. This channel used to be half decent, now its just clickbait timewaste.

Your mistake was using the heatsink that came with the T705.
That thing is garbage. Other heatsinks will give you temps in the high 40 degrees.
