I live about a mile and a half from Monk Bar. It’s weird how the historic beauty of York becomes so usual and normal to us residents😂 it really is a great place to live
It’s called Jewbury as a derivation from Jewburgh - the settlement beyond the walls where Jews lived before they were driven away following massacre and suicides at Clifford’s Tower in 1190. When a car park and supermarket were developed in the 1980s far more bodies than expected were exhumed and reinterred in an area marked by a plaque unveiled by the Chief Rabbi across the road from the sidewalk where you were filming. When I was a child York had very few Jewish citizens and was commonly thought to be a place avoided by Jews
Well-explained! The sad thing about the car park at the moment is that the Go Outdoors shop has recently been vacated, and the lease for the Sainsbury’s runs out in January and won’t be renewed apparently. The future of the cemetery remains unclear but by the looks of things, it will soon be covered by flats. There was a petition back in March to try and get the landlord to let Sainsbury’s renew their lease to preserve the area where the cemetery was, given that it’s the largest Jewish medieval cemetery in Europe, but I’m unclear on what’s going to happen to it, and it’s probably a goldmine for the landlord
You have done York the absolute biggest favour with your video. I've lived here 25 years and never once seen it that quiet. I actually laughed out loud when I saw the car park.
Love that @knowles2211 😂 I usually go during workdays, as the HQ of the company I work for is based in York near that carpark. That might be why so quiet vs Weekends/evenings haha
Dude ! You really need to go to Berwick upon Tweed. The Elizabethan Walls are an absolute joy to walk around …. Takes about an hour …. Think that makes them bigger than York …. Ps take your bike . B ….
@@harrisonk89 Awesome! I was briefly living with a Jewish family who were all very good friends of mine and they refused to visit York because of the history. It was an interesting insight into their viewpoints.
It’s so funny how I walk down there all the time without thinking about it but next time I walk down I will take time to think about history because it’s been forgotten by the people who live there
Beautiful city, Christmas Market is worth a visit, the Cathedral is awesome - if you love history, architecture and a warm welcome I highly recommend a visit....imo the best city break in the uk.

York is the most beautiful city in England, fact

I used to walk the walls when I first moved here but rarely walk them now.

I think York is a great place.
It really is 💯👌🏻
Yeah it's lovely, shame there's nothing but tourism here and unbelievable house prices these days so a lot of us end up leaving 😕
What a nice sunny day for a walk along a pretty (and well-built!) wall to an impressive gate house. I always wanted to go there. Nice foliage!
