- Ryan Poles believes Caleb Williams’ battling through adversity in 2023 is a good thing. USC Football started 6-0 last year and finished 7-5. Williams had goals of repeating as the Heisman Trophy winner and leading USC to the College Football Playoff, but neither happened. Poles said he and Williams talked about it and both think it could be the best thing that’s happened to him for his career moving forward.
- Poles loves that Williams is “cool under pressure” and pointed to his first significant game action at Oklahoma as a true freshman when he led the Sooners to a 55-48 win over Texas after trailing 28-7 when he entered the game and replaced Spencer Rattler.
- Caleb Williams’ arm talent is something that caught Poles’ attention. Poles referenced the tape and said that the full arsenal of throws are on display.
- Poles believes the Bears’ roster is in a much better position than it was when Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields got drafted by the Bears. The additions of DJ Moore and Keenan Allen over the past 2 years along with weapons like Cole Kmet, D’Andre Swift and Gerald Everett should really help out the rookie QB.
- Perhaps most importantly, the Bears’ GM believes in Caleb Williams’ wiring and leadership abilities. Replacing Justin Fields in the Bears’ locker room won’t be easy, but Poles thinks Williams is the right guy for it.

“If you really watch the tape, you’re drawn to his ability to change ball speed with accuracy. You’ll see a lot of guys who are high-velocity, high-speed throwers, but you love those guys who have the ability to demonstrate feel, have touch, show loft. He changes speeds, uses his anticipation. Those are the kind of things I don’t think many people study or see that I think are really impressive.”

“When you look at the history of the last two quarterbacks here, usually it’s about the supporting cast and it’s about putting guys in a position to be successful. I think Caleb knows, both verbally and by action, that I really value that and understand that part of it.”

This is one of the first years I can say I’m exited for the draft for once. With all our previous GM’s made the draft a joke because the scouters the Bears had were the ineptitude of the Lions and Browns combined. I swear Pace must have used the Browns and Lions to idolize the way he messes with draft picks. Pace “I’ll give you a First this year and next years first for Ryan Leaf, and Ki Jana Carter just give me a 7’th a bag of chips and a Coke because I want a snack”.

The Bears for a long time were at the very least mildly competitive. So they never had high draft picks. The best the Bears had was Pace picking 7th with Kevin White, who was a freak of nature but never played, so that set the Bears back big. I love what Poles is doing structurally for the whole team. Being gifted the #1 pick isn’t impressive. There’s a market for that stuff. What’s impressive is the no name pretty decent players he’s picking up across the board to build an above avg roster. Picking Caleb is a no brainer, and then he elevates that above avg roster to a Super Bowl.
Pace is up there for worst GMs
@@jamesonryley3691 Kevin White never played. So that’s like starting your career as a GM with no 1st round pick. It’s just hard to get ahead after that. So he had to reach with Trubisky to try and save his job. If Pace had the same head start that Poles has with the number #1 pick 2 years in a row and all that cap space he would have been fine. Almost no GM’s get 2 #1 picks back to back… so poles has a major head start over any GM. But poles is doing really nice building out this roster with a lot of decent to above avg players to be sustainable long term. That’s where Poles is earning his money. The top picks Poles is getting is hard to screwup.

8 is a nice number but the Bears are going to need much better drafting and a much better head coach to hit that number. Brady went to 10 and started in an era where you could maintain a strong roster without getting killed by contracts. Bears cap is near maxed right now, and this is not a Super Bowl roster. Oline and Dline are mediocre at best. Outside of Caleb the next 2-3 years will tell a lot about Poles and his drafting. So far a mixed bag. People act like Dexter is some kind of star, he had 2.5 sacks. That’s not a star. The Bears drafted Dexter and Pickens, the Rams drafted Byron Young, Kobi Turner, Puka, Tuli Tuipulotu, and Steve Avila and didn’t have a first round pick. So we got out drafted by a team that didn’t have a first round pick. Badly out drafted. I mean great we got two talented young secondary players, just like the year before. But our lines suck and the best he has done is trade for Sweat. Oh Bates is our new Center, well that’s great, just what we need, another mediocre center. He is building the team via Free agency and trades, just like the last 20 years.

Poles is not going to get fired because he drafted a generational talent like Caleb. 100% of GM’s would have traded Fields and drafted Caleb. Do not like negative fans always talking about firing GM’s and coaches. The best teams have stability and a long term plan. And do not understand how you fire anyone when the team is trending up. Caleb is as close to a no lose prospect as we have seen and he will be the best QB we have had. Love the foundation of great young players Poles is drafting and Eberflus is coaching. Go Bears!

I saw the Pivot interview. Caleb is a very impressive young man, very focused. I loved Justin but it was time to move on. If Justin had won the last game of the year against Green Bay, then I'd be all in on keeping him. But he never proved to me that he could consistently make clutch plays in the 4th quarter.
I am hopeful that Caleb is the real deal. None of us will know for sure until he shows us, so I laugh at folks who think they know the answer (good or bad). But I am rooting for Caleb, just like I was rooting for Justin.

Honestly, all this hype on Caleb Williams is starting to get annoying. With Joe Burrow he proved it at college by winning the Natty, and going on to play in the Super Bowl but Caleb hasn’t done any of that, and he’s not even humble to begin with. I’m starting to question whether the Bears are closer to the Super Bowl or a top 5 pick for the next 10 years…..

The adversity of Williams in 2023 is child's play in compared to the adversity Fields went through since the beginning of the covid season in college.
This is why many scouts, former GMs, players and experts' questions Williams intangibles.
It sounds like Poles is trying to convince himself that has made the correct decision by drafting Williams and not taking 3 to 4 high value picks in a trade.
I expect any difference from last year's results and have no faith in Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus.
