I was actually there during the Boise Cascade strike of 1986 working for an outside security firm SPI. Was there for about two months. Your film brought back some great memories.

great stuff! I finally made it up there this summer vacation - it looks the same, which is why I like the Big G - a virtual MEC museum. Neat flatcar loads sitting in the yard too. I looks like the side of the roundhouse got knocked off in a derailment and was cheaply rebuilt at some time in the past. U18B 405 looks a bit beat and worn - Good reference for my weathering of the HO model. Thanks for posting this vintage footage - keep 'em coming!
Planning a layout based off the Rumford Branch. Any information on how the branch was served and customers from the final years of the MEC would be greatly appreciated.
It was announced this week 6/1/18 that the mill has been sod to a Chinese company. Supposedly it is to remain operating where it is. Meaning not scrapped like a few other mills in Maine.
Sorry, I'm as big a proponent of railways and jobs as anyone. But I would rather see it scrapped than sell out to communist China.
In late 80's my family would vacation to Rangeley ME, driving up from Chelmsford MA, with me in back of station wagon hoping to catch a glimpse of the Big G's as we passed through Auburn and then Rumford. Thanks so much for posting this Craig! Would love to model train operations at/near this mill... these vids will be priceless for that

Anybody know if the mill used chips or coal for the boiler? I see it has a unloading shed on the south west side.
You should be able to find some info on railroad.net. There is a lot of current info on the panam section. I believe that they burn coal, chips and shredded tires in the present day not sure how that has changed over the years.
