Wow, great video, I just saw both #52 and #56 are for sale on ozark mountain rail as of December 2020.
This is Great! That BL-2 Number 54 is now owned by the Stourbridge Line based in Honesdale, PA. They didnt'e even change the paint, just the name on the sides. I rode in the cab of that engine when it was doing one of it's passenger runs when i was 11 years old! Great memories.
Man do I miss the Bangor and Aroostook. I caught it on the tail end of it's existence in the 1990s, walking around NMJ. It was great! Sign a wavier saying the railroad isn't responsible if we hurt ourselves, and your have access to the entire yard! By the time I was able to explore the yard, all that were left were the GP38s, Santa Fe GP7 rebuilds and Canadian American F40 and GP35 rebuilds. Boy I miss those days!
Don't forget, 54 has been running on the Stourbridge Line in Northeastern Pennsylvania since the mid 80's. That was the first BL2 I ever saw and it impressed me from the moment I saw it. 54 still wears the tri-color paint too, with only a quick patch job over the Bangor & Aroostook and herald. The 2 ex-BAR "DL&W" F3's had been painted in the Jersey Central tangerine & blue scheme for many years and are near the 54, in Scranton PA.
Glad you liked it, i've always loved BL2's....pretty lucky to get a cab ride, thats pretty rare these days! Craig
I have been though the culvert tunnel! Hard to believe but the round house and adjacent to the main line areas are now a scrap metal recycling/used equipment dealership now. The BAR was the class of all New England roads in my opinion. Nice old footage and thank you for posting.
So......, that's what it was! A culvert tunnel, for passing under the tracks!
Nice memories of railroad operations in the past. This was a fascinating look at the antiques still running. Those E units and BL2s are in great shape considering they were over 40 years old in 1980!
The old coaling tower is awesome. This is gives me some ideas for my model railroad. I'm working on the North Maine Jct. area.
I went inside the cab of BAR #52 this summer and I am officially obsessed with BL2's!!!
@CRQ5508 I remember that...there was so much vintage stuff parked around and tracks with trees growing up between the ties.
You gotta respect thos New England railroaders they kept those first generation engines runnin for a long time F's in the 80s amazeing !!! Great Vid pay attention you youngsters watching.
I'm thinking that I would have enjoyed working there back then!
Beautiful work ! I wish every diesel was a cab unit and every switcher a BL2 ! GOD bless you for preserving this great American history !
Hi Craig, This was a great trip to NMJ lots of nice old units still around !! Boy I miss this rail trips and Moose ! Lots of chatter by Moose this day he was much quieter in later days for the videos. Lol Thanks Craig
16:18 Jeeeez trains are HUGE !!!
One,# 557 (ex #57, 557)), is in its original livery and at Cole land Transportation museum, in Bangor, Maine, 2 others are at Museums and in working order in North eastern Pa. I believe
howdy ,boy that brings back memories , I remember being there in the 80s thanks ,I really enjoyed that .
My pleasure Gary! Craig
Very impressive old footage. Did any of those BL2's get lucky and end up at a railroad museum?
Thanks Jerry, Moose did some excellent video for sure...glad you liked it, Craig
awsome! video !! i lived in oakfield about a mile from B.A.R. roundhouse there, I seen all these units before I went to bangor and seen 557 at the cole museum,44 is now dlw663 and 46 is dlw664 i belive, i sure miss hearing these running in service there is a hell of a hill out of oakfield and i used to hear 4-5 of these running notch 8 clear out of town!! oh yah bl2 #52 is freshly redone running in new york #56 is getting redone to match 52 from what i understand
17:55 "That starts up better then my cah!" That's because it's a Bah engine silly. God I wish it was 1980 again. We still built things in this country and you could walk into a rail yard with a video camera and not get shot at, dragged away in handcuffs, accused of being a terrorist, and harassed for having a hobby.
LOL! that starts up better than my cah! thats cause BAH took good care of their equipment back then some of these old unit's were weathered real bad by this time but they always sounded good! I think that is why these old units were sought after by collectors the way they were! everyone knew they were taken care of! and yah the hahns were real loud on these old units too!...LOL
Yes, there are several that have been saved. I've got a couple of BAR fans that watch my site, maybe they could tell you where they are. Craig
one is here in saratoga and one is on its way.
we have 52 now and 56 is on its way.
both belong to Saratoga & North Creek Railway
the BL-2 ON A TURNTABLE WOW IT COULD B 1950 INSTEAD OF 1980
nice vid , i remember watching them moving potato cars around the county when i was a kid , they had nice long trains back then.
Thats a lot of engines, I wonder how many jobs there are.
Hi Andrew, Thanks for the info! Craig
How can I figure out where to get times and spots where I can get some new footage of railroads in northern maine?? Faster the trains the better...I know of spots around Eagle Lake that I can get shots of the pulp train going around the lake but it is usually in the middle of the night.
Man...amazing video, thanks so much for posting. Shared on Facebook with the Cole Land Transportation Museum where BL2 557 still resides.
@PlugMartian I couldn't agree more.....I had been going to Rigby yard in South Portland for over fifty years now, my grandfather took me, my dad took me, I took my kids. This summer I was on my way back from vacation, so I stopped to do some time exposures (pictures) I parked in the lot and stood right by my truck (as I always do!) and some little big man jerk (I assume a trainmaster) came over and talked to me like I was a teenager and asked me to leave and never come back! Craig
Not to mention the lines of retired GP7s, covered in rust and most of them being cannibalized for parts.
I am not at all familiar with the operations in Northern Maine.....Can any of my viewers help this guy out? Craig
All BL2's were was just GP9's with a different body shape.
The Bl2 was built before the Gp 9 it was a cab unit built with the truss frame system like the earlier f units had , the Bl2 had a 16-567B engine that made 1500 hp the GP 9 had a 16-567BC engine rated at 1750 HP , also the GP 7 and 9 had a full frame under them and did not rely on the cab and hoods for structural support , the BL2 was simply the precursor to the later Gp series and was significantly different in construction , I hope this helps out
nhrrman these videos are showing my age. Please stop it. LOL.
BOZO THE HORN!
