Apna Sangeet was the sound of my childhood. In Birmingham growing up in the 80's Bhangra music was everywhere and being mixed with reggae and hip hop. filtering down to different communities. Im a black guy from jamaica and my asian friends would explain the word of the song to me..... I love the indian vibe.
This is a brilliant piece of music with great lyrics that form a commentary rather than just a piece of music that can be danced too. A social commentary encompassing the individual travelling from the Punjab who made long journey to Britain and enshrines that generation that came in the 1960s & 1970s. Future generations of Punjabis can analyze this as the English landscape becomes part of a wider Punjabi folklore to along with the village life and the green fields in the Punjab.
This is definitely the 80's, I know because I'm from that era. 7 years later in the early 90's Apna Sangeet remixed this song and was called Soho Road the return. In the remix there was a woman singing along with the lead singer Sardara Gill. I still have this tune both original and remix. It sounds brilliant, you can't beat old skool. It is probably the remix that you are referring to.
Man.. U did a favour uploading apna sangeet and Soho road.. Really takes me back to my school days when use to get songs recorded on blank cassettes and then full volume deck.. M loving it
yes u are right ... there was a remix made in 1992 called " soho road returns " feauturing paramjit pammi on the album "Jam to the bhangra"... the remix is sick ... nice bassline and beat
video: OMG, Classic! How did anyone get hold of this. Im sure sardara is doing a cros between James Brown and MJ dancing (very badley). Remember they paved the way for all the bhangra out today. At the time this was XCLNT stuff!
mate - went to see Bhajan yesterday - he had a heart scare.. but he is good know the guy since I was about 8 years old - top guy very funny He gave the group the name & had all the contacts
hey, i really like this sort of indian music, not too medodic and stays at more or less one not. can you suggest any other artists or groups who might sound very similar. mabe some instrumentals. thanks :P
Lol. Aaaaah. When shit was creative and no one song sounded the same as they would in the last track. Although I find it weird To be looking for someone on soho road after putting on ear rings. Shout outs to soho road. And the pubs. And the old KFC opposite grove lane and all the handsworth lads for being good sports when I'm out their drinking.
I saw this dude in India last year in k.f.c. of all places; the dude had the same hair style that he's got in this video. I guess if he changes it he will lose his Apna Sangeet celebrity; just end up being another face lost in the crowd.
anyone know the name and artist of an 80's bhangra classic which had the lyrics shava shava hussaka ne shava shava husa ka in the middle parts ..i looking for it my fave classic tune but cant kno wthe name and artist pls help.
