We are quite lucky that Palladio took the effort to create his books. Do you think he realized at the time his books would become a staple hundreds of years later? It’s amazing what people could accomplish without the technology of today. More than what we can accomplish now it seems.

THe rules of classicism were set by Vitruvius who stated that even though they are "rules" the gifted architect should shape them to his clients needs, the skill of his masons and his own idea of beauty. So Palladio saw some detail, and did just that. Degrade was more of a surveyor than an artist, drawing what he saw and measured rather than adapting it to his own psyche.

These videos have become some of my favorite to watch. The detailed explanation has helped me immensely. My son is taking an into to architecture, and I may make him watch these to get a leg up.
Also we are from Charlotte and didn't even know about Rosedale. We'll have to make that a field trip.
What's even funnier looking it up on Google maps it's a block away from how I go home everyday and had no idea.

At 58:25 - Jefferson was building for a new nation, one with its tail in the air showing confidence and mastery over an old enemy - so the Griffon's tail is, like a happy dog's, raised in a curl of victory.
