      I used to be an IT guy, became a mechanic a few years ago. There are customers in both fields that are exactly the same. There's the "oh my buddy can do it cheaper" that you inevitably have to put more work into to fix the original issue and the attempted repair, the "I will ignore every message and warning until it no longer does what I want" people, and the "that basic maintenance that will prolong the life of my machine that I ignored for the first three years is due" people. They're might be the same people for all I know.

      Looked like the freightliner cluster. The M2 I drove would periodically turn on both yellow lights, then start flashing the red one and then auto shutoff in like 20 seconds. After 3 restarts it would lockout and not start for 30 mins. Faulty coolant level circuit because I guess drivers nowadays are such dummies they have to code them to shutoff automatically when it thinks the coolant is low.... Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen as the exhaust brake stops when the engine shuts down. Had a pretty steep hill I had to cook my brakes on because this engine shut off. Mind you this freightliner had only 130k miles on it!

    It never fails to amaze me how rotted some cars/trucks are in the US and still being driven around. Here in the UK, and in the EU, they would have been scrapped long before, because they wouldn't pass the annual safety inspections.

    • @zenithperigee7442
      @zenithperigee7442 5 місяців тому +3

      @rickconstant6106, well we still have safety and emissions testing which can be seriously annoying in some places because of how strict some are about "enforcement" BUT many of these vehicles you see falling apart are either already classified as "off-road" so not legally for driving OR the owner is padding someone's pocket for a "passing safety inspection." Vehicle owners in the "rust belt" also have a really rough time as it is... I've seen cars barely 5-10 yrs old already suffering rusting our structural components, road salts are seriously no joke! Yet I've seen some "California cars" where the frame looks almost like it rolled off the factory floor a month ago and yet it's "20 yrs old."

    • @Palmtop_User

      Yeah some vehicles here in new england get destroyed from the salt

    • @RobertHansen4
      @RobertHansen4 4 місяці тому +2

      Here in NW indiana, you are lucky if a car looks cosmetically not rusty for longer than like 7 years. There are no safety inspections, but much of the state is farmland. There are some jun vehicles around, but most people who are driving them simply cant afford a newer one, and do with what they have. The country is simply to big for public transportation or riding your bike everywhere, things aren't as "compact" layout wise as they are in the UK. You can be in a populated area, and still 40 minutes from a hardware or grocery store going 60 miles per hour, or 96KMH. It often is a reality that you need a car to live around here, but everything is expensive. I personally have a 2006 chevy Malibu, and a 2006 chevy silverado. I bought the truck in 2020 and have put approximately 50,000 miles on it in 3 years, that is a bit high to some, but sometimes it's necessary. The truck is miraculously almost rust free. The malibu is my backup, and winter "beater" if you will, It's rusty as sin, but I fix anything dangerous that breaks on it. In 5 to 6 years, It will be unsafe to drive. For now, cosmetically it looks terrible, but mechanically it is safe. Looks aren't everything either.@@Palmtop_User

      I depends on where you are in the U.S. I am in the middle of Texas where it hardly ever snows. Very rarely do I ever see cars with rusted undercarriages. The ones that I have worked on always come from somewhere up north. You can put 200k miles on a truck here and never have a spot of rust on it.

    6:04 Can relate its the only way to find out.
    8:19 As a Retired Car Mechanic I would say the worst one I worked on was a Renault Megan from 2008.
    2:32 Many reason why people don't see whats going on is quite simple:
    When buying a new car (or some brands of car) the Car Mechanics of that Car Brand DON'T allowe you to see the car on the lift
    And when its a old one some Car Mechanics that work privately don't allowe you to go under the car for "Safetly" reasons
    That apply to non-car people but not to a Retired Car Mechanic like myself.
    The Car I bought (Hyundai i30N) the Dealer allowed me to see under the car even,they really showed care for they customer wishes.
    And when I used to work with my Father in our Garage,we would always allowe the customers to be in the shop warm up next to the oven,chat,eat some food together as it basically was almost a family like feel to it,seen lots of the same customer as far away,short or long drivers.

      Over here in Germany it isn´t that bad - lots of hacks, manuals, and repair-stuff on the internet and helpful guys (and sometimes gals!) in discussion groups. Also torrents of spareparts. Choose wisely though: Audi A8 for example, avoid the V12 and the V8 5-Valve engine. Also have a spare 6000$ for an automatic gearbox overhaul (or, like me, drive the S8 with manual gearbox. Porsche-killer. 😁 ).

    • @antibrevity
      @antibrevity 5 місяців тому

      You're probably right and it would mean that the customer added remote start themselves and probably leaves it in neutral in the garage (no safety switch!!). My guess here would be that the customer was sitting in the waiting area and accidentally hit the start button and is thus *fully* *liable* for damages. I hope so, anyway; if this is what happened then the moron could have killed someone just because they're a lazy SOB that can't even walk into the garage to start their Corvette. I say "garage" because very few people park their Corvettes outside.
      If you're adding remote start to a car, you're probably too lazy to drive anyway and should call an Uber.

    I'm a body tech, not a mechanic, but i see dumb crap all the time also. The mismatched headlights do not surprise me. Many people seem to miss between l.e.d and h.i.d. Then you have o.e.m and aftermarket which will not have the factory logo stamp. It's also easy for people to miss the trim inside the light. Techs forget to switch the ballast, and they can't figure out why their lights are not working right. It's also ridiculous that these new cars need the bumper dropped to change the bulbs in some of them. They are making it where your regular person can't work on their own cars anymore what with 1 time clips and parts. You almost need basic mechanical knowledge anymore for the most simple task. Such as adding blinker fluid

    I wonder if some of these people recognize that tens of dollars worth of oil would have saved them many thousands of dollars in engine or car replacement?
    A close relative of mine has seized at least 5 engines across multiple cars and has shown no sign of improvement, despite owning a smartphone that has calendar and reminder apps that could easily tell them when to check the oil. Doing it once is a learning experience for non-car people, but 2 or more oil-starved engines is incomprehensible and you should have your license revoked as you're too dumb to drive on public roads :(.
    Such people *must* have electric cars as they cannot do even minor maintenance on ICE engines, but one wonders if they'd remember to plug in an EV or even add washer fluid; a lot of people today are totally useless and would die without constant supervision. A man can dream.
