Recently there have been Google layoffs, Spotify layoffs, and more. In this video, I break down 3 major differences between Big Tech and Startups in 2023 since the tech industry has changed a lot this past year.
Software Engineers and Product Managers can still make a great salary in 2023 at both big tech companies and startups, but what are the main differences between the two? How has that changed in 2023 compared to 2022?

It’s disappointing that perks are disappearing, especially ones that increase employee productivity. For example, there are tons of ways to be productive while getting a massage. I’ve been using my new Meta Quest Pro to really level up my productivity while my masseur works out the kinks in my neck and bum knee. I am also collaborating with several high profile chiropractors on a new massage table that supports remote working. I can send you additional information if you’d be interested in reviewing a prototype for a video. As always, thank you for the information Mr. Saltarelli.

That’s very interesting indeed! I’m curious - do you think it’s worthwhile from a work/life balance perspective to continue to optimize being productive? I also think one of the great benefits of these perks is providing the ability to decompress/ carve out down time to allow employees to be their full self/focused when it comes time to actually work on hard problems. What do you think?

@@ProductManagerAnthony While the point of perks is ostensibly to help the company attract and retain talent by promoting a work/life balance, many perks also help companies wring as much work from their employees as possible. For example, on-site restaurants ensure more time is spent at the office and less time is spent meal planning or off-campus; this particular perk also encourages people to work late and eat dinner at their workplace. If Google were to close all their restaurants, employees would likely spend less time at work and get less work done. Companies are pausing the massage perk because they think they can save money and not lose employees/applicants because of the macro environment, and because they don’t think of massages as _directly_ increasing productivity to the same degree. If they could make massages much more focused on productivity, I think they may have kept the perk. You might be interested in a 3 year old Vice article about using a massage table for computer work. While the writer has the right impulse, he needs a purpose-designed ergonomic table or chair. Which is what I am currently working to perfect.

You make lots of great points! I’m sure that was definitely part of the decision making process - what perks can be cut to save on costs but maintain productivity/time spent working for their employees. I’ll check out the vice article!
