That is so true. I started learning Chinese, then started learning Spanish 3 months later. Whenever my brain could not think of the word in the language I was speaking, it substituted with the other. They are not even close to the same, so I think I learned too fast with not enough depth, but it was interesting how things connect in our brains.
i think that ppl are so hung up on grammar being right when speaking it after learning but we have to remember that native speakers often get grammar wrong and its no big deal

Hi Jo! I'm a 19-year-old American and have only ever spoken English, but recently I visited Italy with my family and it was honestly like a whole new world opening up to me. I'm a huge people person so it was kind of frustrating only being able to say things like 'ciao' and 'io parlo inglese' to communicate with non-English speakers. I'm starting to seriously learn Italian now for the day I go back and reconnect with some of the sweet people that I met during my visit, and I just wanted to say that your content is very inspiring for me and makes me excited to enter into this new opportunity and journey, despite all the frustrations that I know will come with it. I’m studying Spanish and Korean. I’m excited to learn languages but there’s down sides to it, for me it’s the fact that I can’t have a tutor because I still live with my parents and my parents won’t allow me to have a tutor so it’s hard to learn alone sometimes. But I’m excited to see the end result of my learning😁😁
I only had a tutor when I was basically fluent in the language, and the lessons were just conversations which you can have with any native online for free through discord or something. It’s definitely possible to succeed without a tutor, you got this!
The foreign languages I know the best are English and French. I can also understand Spanish and Italian very well, but not speak much. I can also read in Catalan and am gaining the same skill in Romanian. And I know a little bit of German, too. Someday, I want to hire tutors for English and French just for them to listen to me reading and correct my mistakes for a whole hour (so they'll have to know the language inside out) and have them assign me the elaboration of essays to be commented and corrected in class.
The construction analogy is so real lol it really does feel like a work in progress that needs hyper focus and “building another highway” or learning another language while you are still working on a previous one feels messy. I have a hard time doing that. So far, I am only able to focus on one at a time. At least until I’m over the beginning level, then I feel ok learning about another one.

What an informative video! It's great learning another language as I'm working on two other languages Mandarin and Russian besides English going on 4 and 2 years! Speak neither fluently yet getting a lot from the journey! I've touched on a few other languages and my goal is 5-6 languages in the next 3 years! Congratulations!😊

gosh i totally relate: the italian-spanish highways in my brain are always crossing each other. i'm not super disciplined learning languages, but what i noticed with time is that understanding becomes easier (a conversation, a movie without subtitles...), but talking doesn't get necessarily easier - the effort to drill the verbs and all is ... the same, maybe.

Eu falo português porque sou brasileira, english just because, français parce que je voudrais être une diplomat, estoy aprendiendo español porque me gusta (puedo compreender más que puedo hablar), and I'm studying korean because I like kpop so why not? (I can't type in korean on my computer). I understand it when people say that if you speak a language and try to learn another that's part of the same branch it's easier, but I enjoy learning korean more than I enjoy learning spanish. A lot of the times when im trying to speak spanish im unsure whether the im talking spanish or just using a portuguese word in spanish pronunciation. Whereas in korean everything is new and i know exactly where i am on the language. Also, whenever I'm learning something new, I always speak the last language i learned. Quando eu tava aprendendo francês, pensava muito em inglês, aprendendo espanhol, penso muito em francês, e etc. The switching is also ever present, i love it, but it is also frustrating when I forget the word i want in the language im speaking and can only remember the one in other language
I'm Brazilian too, and you expressed everything I was feeling, is much more noticeable evolutions In comprehension, speaking, listening from languages that are far more different of ours.
I took Spanish in university but struggled with the mix in my brain between French (been speaking since Kindergarten) and Spanish. I've been trying to pick it back up post-grad & so glad to hear you talk on the mix-up in the brain. Great video Jo!

Such a great video with super tips. I speak Spanish, French and Portuguese. My Spanish has gotten so rusty and I used to be super fluent. I know I can get back to that same level but I've been dedicating so much time in French and Portuguese over the past few years. I like your idea of keeping everything in a central area as you said. I am a bit all over the place so something as easy as having material on a google dock, could really be useful and easy to manage. I can totally relate when you mentioned that some days we will just have lousy days speaking one of our language and then on another time, our fluency will be top notch.

Like you mentioned I struggle the most with the languages that are too similiar. Like I'm strongest in Spanish. Picking up French was easy, there was no confusion, but trying to add Portuguese was confusing because my French isn't strong enough yet to disassociate the two. I'm simultaneously maintaining Spanish, learning Japanese, French and German right now and I have no confusion with any of them. Oh boy okay you said to reply in as many languages as I can so here's my best try, with heavy reliance on my tools. Como ya has dicho, lo que más me cuesta es hablar los idiomas que son demasiado parecidos. Por ejemplo, mi mejor idioma es el español. Aprender francés fue fácil, no hubo confusión, pero añadir portugués fue confuso porque mi francés no es lo suficientemente bueno como para disociar los dos. The brain mixup thing is the main reason why I don’t learn Italian or Portugese after having learned French and Spanish. The last language I learned to a conversational level was Spanish. Already knowing French, that was relatively easy. And it spoiled me. Because right now, I’m learning Mandarin. And I can’t believe how difficult it is: The most frustrating aspect is probably the disconnect between written language and spoken language. But it’s also a fun challenge. 我觉得中文很难，但是我也很喜欢中国人和中国文化。
I am an American student in Austria so....... Ich lerne gerade Deutsch (besonders Österreichisch Deutsch). I was an exchange student in Sweden... Då pratar jag också jättemycket Svenska. I took Spanish for five years in school growing up... Y por eso...hablo español también pero ahora es más difícil para recordar todo el vocabulario. I have learned many words from many different languages but it's hard to keep track of the ones I've learned to a higher level. No matter how many languages you know, those neuropathways *aka the people in the office that is your brain* will always need strengthening. I even forget words now sometimes in my native English.
Still working on improving my French from highschool and learning Dutch. I been wanting to visit Belgium. Spanish is my minor though.😅 I have tried learning Italian, Korean, and Vietnamese and remember random things and recognize of someone os speaking in these languages.
The lack of praise is VERY REAL. When I was A0 and A1, I had constant support when I could order food and learn some new vocab. Now, I'm A2, and people expect me to be a lot farther ahead. The wins also feel a bit smaller, so it's definitely a downer sometimes. Regardless, I'm going to keep going because I know that I'm advancing (even if it doesn't feel as drastic). I think this is when discipline is more important than motivation.
There's a great youtube video by Alina Evin where she mentions that building the neuroplasticity to change between languages helped her to not confuse Italian and Swedish. Essentially certain languages she learned without the involvement of her other languages and she would have conversations in italian and mixup swedish. Ich bin quasi bilingual aufgewachsen. Deutsch und Teochew sind meine Muttersprachen, wobei ich tatsächlich eher nur Deutsch als Muttersprache fließend sprechen kann. I am also fluent in English as I’ve taught myself through video consumption and interacting with natives on social media how to actually speak, besides learning English in school. 我也上了中文课，但是那时候我和本族语同学上了课。我每次听不懂他们说什么。所以我的普通话很差。 En la escuela he aprendido el español también. Creo que es una lengua muy bonita. Pero no puedo hablar en conversaciones. Mi español es muy básico con muchos errores. Pero ahora estoy mejorando mis habilidades en español. و أنا بتعالم العربي مصري، لكن انا بتكلم شوية بس. أنا بحب العربي. There probably were errors in Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic as I don’t speak them well. But I did manage to teach myself English fluently. And regarding your question, yes language learning gets easier but also harder the more you learn. It’s both, but in different ways, like you said. What makes it easier, I think, is that the general learning process becomes more accessible and tangible, as one has accumulated many different strategies over time and already has been through several language learning journeys. But on the other hand it can also get confusing if the acquired languages aren’t fully “ripe”. In a sense of being fluent. I am definitely guilty of “language learning jumping” where I don’t finish a language until I’m fluent. Hence I do mix up many words between different languages, especially if they’re from similar language families. And even if languages aren’t from a similar language root, I still sometimes mix up some languages. For some strange reason I’ve been mixing up Spanish and Egyptian Arabic, even though they’re from totally different language families. It’s a mystery to me honestly. Hopefully this struggle ends when I finish my goal of learning Spanish until fluency (a recent goal of mine). I actually discovered your channel after having looked for Egyptian Arabic videos. Very entertaining! I’m also very impressed of your progress in Flemish. It seems like you speak quite early in your language journey! I am quite the opposite but it did inspire me to maybe break off my routine and just dip into realms of speaking a little earlier than I feel comfortable in. We’ll see but I am definitely in awe of your progress and dedication! 😄

Pero, ahora estoy aprendiendo español y no me acuerdo de escuchar podcasts en la lengua, no conozco tantos youtubers ... Entonces, tengo menos tiempo de exposición en la lengua. But my goal is to finish 2025 fluent in spanish. I have this crazy life goal of being fluent in 1 language for each decade of my life. (So, 3 languages and some others in beginner level)
I‘d say I‘m fluent in 5 languages. Yet two of them are Spanish and Italian. If I focus on one the other gets weaker. I‘m still trying to figure out how to overcome this. Regarding the question if language learning gets easier after having studied many languages. I‘d say yes. I‘m now learning Turkish and Grammar patterns as well as phonemes are way easier to distinguish and understand for me. It really helps me to grasp the language faster because I can use the language knowledge of the other languages (even if they are not in the same language family). So the Grammar and Pronunciation aspects get easier (imo) but the output is still the hardest part.
It's crazy how I related so much to the part when you say you try to speak the language and, some days you're doing amazing, next day it's like your brain's farting lol even though i've spoke english my whole life, there are days that you're not doing fine. This is such a insane topic and super weird!
I speak Papiamentu (this is my native language) English ( i grew up watching cartoons in english) Dutch ( we where colonized by the dutch, also about 90% of the educational/school systems in my island country are in dutch) Spanish ( I had spanish classes in school and Papiamentu is quite similar to spanish) Japanese ( i studied japanese because my twin brother and i, in company with some of my friends we’re planning to visit Japan for the first time. That happend right before COViD started, at the end of 2019, so we ended up not going but i enjoyed the language study so much that i kept it going for 5 years now.) Italian ( I’ve been learning Italian for the last few months) Russian ( I like the way it sounds lol this is my most recent language) Honorable mention: Portuguese: i once tried learning portuguese but at that time my love for languages wasn’t as strong as it is now, so i stopped a short while after but…… my twin bro speaks it semi-fluently so i try to speak to him in portuguese, every chance i get. The funny thing is most brazilian people i’ve interacted with in the past could somewhat understand my native language if i spoke slowly. So therefore, i could prolly pick it up easily if i were to relearn Portuguese.
I learned that multiple languages thing real quick when I tried to refresh my Spanish at the same time as I am learning Sinhala (Sri Lankan language). I've been living in Sri Lanka for 10 months and learning Sinhala for most of my time here. One day I decided to do a duolingo lesson to refresh the Spanish I learned in school, and then I started forgetting Sinhala 😅

Ik spreek vloeiend Vlaams (Ja, ik kom uit België, maar niet Antwerpen xD Gent!!!) - Je parle très bien (je pense xD) français; c'est ma deuxième langue - I speak English fluently (I live in Canada, what do you want? xD) - Ich verstehe gut Deutsch und spreche diese schöne Sprache ein bisschen - Entiendo bien Espanol pero no puedo hablar esta lingua. Lo estoy aprendiendo ahora mismo. I LOOOOOOVE languages. Can't say if it is hard to learn. The only two I learned/am learning are German and Spanish; the other languages were a package deal I received at home, during infancy. Everything is easy then!!! Besides, I like it so much (the studying new languages part) that I can't say if it is difficult or not. Commitment, that's what it's all about, I guess. It's not that people just expect higher quality but once you're realy good and tu perds ton accents dans la langue les personnes partent du principe que tu es native speaker and they just don't get it if you confundes palavras ou não tens o vocabulário certo e a palavra que corresponde melhor. Á 10 anos a viver em França e o melhor que me podem dizer ainda é "oh mais t'es portugaise ? mais tu parles si bien et t'as même pas d'accent!" Love your work !
I’ve experienced the exact thing you’re talking about with speaking and responding. I haven’t been speaking Spanish really in years and I can still understand it, but it is hard to respond. I have even forgotten how to conjugate some verbs.
The second point is so important. I stopped practicing Spanish and didn’t continue learning the grammar ahora el problema es que cuando quiero hablar, siento nerviosa y tímida jaja porque necesito pensar mas y traducir las frases de inglés a español y la otra persona esperando mis respuestas y la pressure gets to me. I believe that is all😅 English is my native language, but I've been exposed to Russian and Spanish my whole childhood, so that motivated me to want to learn and speak these languages and others. Ever since I found out I was a crazy mixture of things, I've been so fascinated by languages and cultures. Honestly though, I don't think I would have learned/be learning these langauges without the never-ending support of my family and my Lord Jesus Christ😁 In all seriousness, I wouldn't have come this far without them. Aprendiendo español y italiano puede ser difícil porque, como dijiste, son similares! sin embargo, estoy mas fuerte en español y por eso i don’t always confuse myself as i don’t know much italian. HOWEVER me encuentro diciendo cosas como “und” en vez de “y”, “ich” en vez de “yo” y otras como asi. que extraño! ich spreche ein bisschen deutsch, auch ich confuse that with norsk! jeg er så glad at i love learning languages. I never confuse those with BSL or українська though 😂

Mi piace moltissimo imparare le lingue. Adesso sto studiando l’italiano con il mio marito que nasceu no Brasil. A gente fala português, espanhol, inglês, francês y ahora estamos aprendiendo el italiano, de hecho vamos a Italia esta semana para hacer un curso de italiano juntos. Ik ga echt stuk dat je Nederlands met een Vlaams accent hebt geleerd. Het klinkt zo schattig. (Zegt een Nederlander). Ik ga volgend jaar een studie in België beginnen en hoop dat ik het Vlaams accent kan oppakken. Naast Nederlands praat ik ek Frysk, in taal dy't yn it noarden fan it lân sprutsen wurdt. Ich spreche auch fließend Deutsch, weil ich Deutsch auf Lehramst studiere und man ein gutes Niveau braucht, um vor der Klasse stehen zu dürfen und das Studium zu absolvieren. Ich habe auch zweimal für 4 Monate in Deutschland gewohnt. I'd say English is my fourth language. Expressing myself in German feels more personal than in English. Although I'm not sure which language I speak better. Duits is natuurlijk de taal waar ik veel voor heb moeten leren en ik ken de details beter om zo maar te zeggen. Engels heb ik opgepikt door jarenlang Engelstalige televisie te kijken, maar als ik Engels spreek, voelt dat zo... vlak. Maintenaint j'apprends français aussi, mais je ne peux pas dire beacoup. J'ai commencé regarder Spongebob en français et j'écoute podcasts avec text. Ik zou zeggen dat een taal onder de knie krijgen even moeilijk blijft, maar hoe je het aanpakt steeds simpeler wordt. Inmiddels weet ik wel wat belangrijk is om te weten voor als je snel resultaat wilt boeken (chunks leren bijv., vooral die echt vaak in gesproken taal gebruikt wordt).

I know english because I moved to the U.S. , but I'm still not fluent because I'm really shy to practice my speaking skills, but I'm can understand pretty well. I found my first attempt at learning a new language (Swedish) failed (I'm still A2 after 2 years) because I wasn't consistent and had no idea what I was doing. Now I'm studying Polish and I know what works best for my brain. I feel more comfortable in Polish after 1 month than swedish...
@@bookswmadi What would you say you're doing differently this time around? In my journey so far, I'm finding that if my learning resource is too structured, I retain less. I'm learning much more by listening to real conversations, music, etc., and then researching what I've heard or read.
@@SDavis2702 i do more sturctured study. I remember learning English this way and I found I enjoy study Polish this way. I typically spend 30-60 minutes a day doing Mango Languages or Colloquial Polish courses then I watch TV in Polish, watching either one episode or 2 before bed. I enjoy the grilling of vocab and the tests, which I know is a.... special thing not everyone enjoys 🙂

That is so true. I started learning Chinese, then started learning Spanish 3 months later. Whenever my brain could not think of the word in the language I was speaking, it substituted with the other. They are not even close to the same, so I think I learned too fast with not enough depth, but it was interesting how things connect in our brains.

Hi Jo! I'm a 19-year-old American and have only ever spoken English, but recently I visited Italy with my family and it was honestly like a whole new world opening up to me. I'm a huge people person so it was kind of frustrating only being able to say things like 'ciao' and 'io parlo inglese' to communicate with non-English speakers. I'm starting to seriously learn Italian now for the day I go back and reconnect with some of the sweet people that I met during my visit, and I just wanted to say that your content is very inspiring for me and makes me excited to enter into this new opportunity and journey, despite all the frustrations that I know will come with it. I’m studying Spanish and Korean. I’m excited to learn languages but there’s down sides to it, for me it’s the fact that I can’t have a tutor because I still live with my parents and my parents won’t allow me to have a tutor so it’s hard to learn alone sometimes. But I’m excited to see the end result of my learning😁😁

I only had a tutor when I was basically fluent in the language, and the lessons were just conversations which you can have with any native online for free through discord or something. It’s definitely possible to succeed without a tutor, you got this!
The foreign languages I know the best are English and French. I can also understand Spanish and Italian very well, but not speak much. I can also read in Catalan and am gaining the same skill in Romanian. And I know a little bit of German, too. Someday, I want to hire tutors for English and French just for them to listen to me reading and correct my mistakes for a whole hour (so they'll have to know the language inside out) and have them assign me the elaboration of essays to be commented and corrected in class.
The construction analogy is so real lol it really does feel like a work in progress that needs hyper focus and “building another highway” or learning another language while you are still working on a previous one feels messy. I have a hard time doing that. So far, I am only able to focus on one at a time. At least until I’m over the beginning level, then I feel ok learning about another one.
Eu falo 4 linguas: português por nascer no Brasil, espanhol por ser de família uruguaia, francês por ser de família francesa e estudar e ser de família e inglês por t sido exposta ao idioma desde pequena. What an informative video! I kept shouting, “literally!” throughout. 😅 It’s nice hearing about the stuff that isn’t spoken about much with language learning cos we get to know it’s not just us, and we don’t have to beat ourselves up when we keep replacing vocabulary with a language we’re currently learning etc.

It's great learning another language as I'm working on two other languages Mandarin and Russian besides English going on 4 and 2 years! Speak neither fluently yet getting a lot from the journey! I've touched on a few other languages and my goal is 5-6 languages in the next 3 years! Congratulations!😊

gosh i totally relate: the italian-spanish highways in my brain are always crossing each other.
i'm not super disciplined learning languages, but what i noticed with time is that understanding becomes easier (a conversation, a movie without subtitles...), but talking doesn't get necessarily easier - the effort to drill the verbs and all is ... the same, maybe.

I like the way you've made me to understand the theory of language learning, that is, what happens when you are at this stage of learning. Rather than using paper and pen, I like using software flashcards for studies, in which I've been used to.

Eu falo português porque sou brasileira, english just because, français parce que je voudrais être une diplomat, estoy aprendiendo español porque me gusta (puedo compreender más que puedo hablar), and I'm studying korean because I like kpop so why not? (I can't type in korean on my computer). I understand it when people say that if you speak a language and try to learn another that's part of the same branch it's easier, but I enjoy learning korean more than I enjoy learning spanish. A lot of the times when im trying to speak spanish im unsure whether the im talking spanish or just using a portuguese word in spanish pronunciation. Whereas in korean everything is new and i know exactly where i am on the language. Also, whenever I'm learning something new, I always speak the last language i learned. Quando eu tava aprendendo francês, pensava muito em inglês, aprendendo espanhol, penso muito em francês, e etc. The switching is also ever present, i love it, but it is also frustrating when I forget the word i want in the language im speaking and can only remember the one in other language

Such a great video with super tips. I speak Spanish, French and Portuguese. My Spanish has gotten so rusty and I used to be super fluent. I know I can get back to that same level but I've been dedicating so much time in French and Portuguese over the past few years.
I like your idea of keeping everything in a central area as you said. I am a bit all over the place so something as easy as having material on a google dock, could really be useful and easy to manage.
I can totally relate when you mentioned that some days we will just have lousy days speaking one of our language and then on another time, our fluency will be top notch.

Nettes Video! Wenn du über wieder und wieder lernen gesagt hast, habe ich das mich gefühlt. Seit 2018 habe ich Deutsch lernen - mit viele Pause zwischen. Ich könnte immer gut verstehen aber schlechte sprechen. Endlich, jetzt kann ich mehr fließend kommunizieren. So ja, es gibt keine Linearität.
Cool video! The relearning part really resonated with me. I have started to learn German in 2018 but struck with several pauses in between. Now I’m finally being able to speak more fluently and feel that things are “cracking out” easily. So yes, there’s no such a thing a linearity.
Learning Dutch is much more difficult than the other languages I learned - French, Greek, English, and my mother language Arabic.

Like you mentioned I struggle the most with the languages that are too similiar. Like I'm strongest in Spanish. Picking up French was easy, there was no confusion, but trying to add Portuguese was confusing because my French isn't strong enough yet to disassociate the two. I'm simultaneously maintaining Spanish, learning Japanese, French and German right now and I have no confusion with any of them.

Comme tu l'as mentionné, j'ai le plus de mal avec les langues qui sont trop similaires. Ma meilleure langue est l'espagnol. Apprendre le français a été facile, il n'y avait aucune confusion, mais ajouter le portugais a été déroutant car mon français n'est pas encore assez fort pour dissocier les deux. Je maintiens simultanément l'espagnol, j'apprends le japonais, le français et l'allemand en ce moment et je n'ai aucune confusion avec aucune d'entre elles.
Wie Sie bereits erwähnt haben, habe ich die meisten Probleme mit Sprachen, die sich zu sehr ähneln. Meine beste Sprache ist Spanisch. The brain mixup thing is the main reason why I don’t learn Italian or Portugese after having learned French and Spanish. The last language I learned to a conversational level was Spanish. Already knowing French, that was relatively easy. And it spoiled me. Because right now, I’m learning Mandarin. And I can’t believe how difficult it is: The most frustrating aspect is probably the disconnect between written language and spoken language. But it’s also a fun challenge. 我觉得中文很难，但是我也很喜欢中国人和中国文化。

I have learned many words from many different languages but it's hard to keep track of the ones I've learned to a higher level. No matter how many languages you know, those neuropathways *aka the people in the office that is your brain* will always need strengthening. I even forget words now sometimes in my native English.
Still working on improving my French from highschool and learning Dutch. I been wanting to visit Belgium. Spanish is my minor though.😅 I have tried learning Italian, Korean, and Vietnamese and remember random things and recognize of someone os speaking in these languages.

The lack of praise is VERY REAL. When I was A0 and A1, I had constant support when I could order food and learn some new vocab. Now, I'm A2, and people expect me to be a lot farther ahead. The wins also feel a bit smaller, so it's definitely a downer sometimes. Regardless, I'm going to keep going because I know that I'm advancing (even if it doesn't feel as drastic). I think this is when discipline is more important than motivation.
There's a great youtube video by Alina Evin where she mentions that building the neuroplasticity to change between languages helped her to not confuse Italian and Swedish. Essentially certain languages she learned without the involvement of her other languages and she would have conversations in italian and mixup swedish. I'll link the video below, but it has alot of great exercises to help.

I speak 4 languages 2 fluently( Spanish and English bc they’re my native ones ) Portuguese I can speak it well but Brazilians talk very fast so I’d say I’m 70% fluent , and my fourth one is Haitian Creole where I’m learning rn. Bc they’re all romance Ianguages I mix them up ALOT but they’re fun and all unique.

Ich bin quasi bilingual aufgewachsen. Deutsch und Teochew sind meine Muttersprachen, wobei ich tatsächlich eher nur Deutsch als Muttersprache fließend sprechen kann.
I am also fluent in English as I’ve taught myself through video consumption and interacting with natives on social media how to actually speak, besides learning English in school.

There probably were errors in Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic as I don’t speak them well. But I did manage to teach myself English fluently. And regarding your question, yes language learning gets easier but also harder the more you learn. It’s both, but in different ways, like you said.
What makes it easier, I think, is that the general learning process becomes more accessible and tangible, as one has accumulated many different strategies over time and already has been through several language learning journeys.
But on the other hand it can also get confusing if the acquired languages aren’t fully “ripe”. In a sense of being fluent. I am definitely guilty of “language learning jumping” where I don’t finish a language until I’m fluent. Hence I do mix up many words between different languages, especially if they’re from similar language families.
And even if languages aren’t from a similar language root, I still sometimes mix up some languages. For some strange reason I’ve been mixing up Spanish and Egyptian Arabic, even though they’re from totally different language families. It’s a mystery to me honestly. Hopefully this struggle ends when I finish my goal of learning Spanish until fluency (a recent goal of mine).

I am quite the opposite but it did inspire me to maybe break off my routine and just dip into realms of speaking a little earlier than I feel comfortable in. We’ll see but I am definitely in awe of your progress and dedication! 😄

:)) brasileira aqui :D A good thing is that I got pretty good in English pretty early in life. So when I got in to language-learning as a hobby, I already had well established English habits. Pero, ahora estoy aprendiendo español y no me acuerdo de escuchar podcasts en la lengua, no conozco tantos youtubers ... Entonces, tengo menos tiempo de exposición en la lengua.
But my goal is to finish 2025 fluent in spanish. I have this crazy life goal of being fluent in 1 language for each decade of my life.
(So, 3 languages and some others in beginner level)
I‘d say I‘m fluent in 5 languages. Yet two of them are Spanish and Italian. If I focus on one the other gets weaker. I‘m still trying to figure out how to overcome this.
Regarding the question if language learning gets easier after having studied many languages. I‘d say yes. I‘m now learning Turkish and Grammar patterns as well as phonemes are way easier to distinguish and understand for me. It really helps me to grasp the language faster because I can use the language knowledge of the other languages (even if they are not in the same language family). So the Grammar and Pronunciation aspects get easier (imo) but the output is still the hardest part.
It's crazy how I related so much to the part when you say you try to speak the language and, some days you're doing amazing, next day it's like your brain's farting lol even though i've spoke english my whole life, there are days that you're not doing fine. This is such a insane topic and super weird!
I speak Papiamentu (this is my native language)
English ( i grew up watching cartoons in english)
Dutch ( we where colonized by the dutch, also about 90% of the educational/school systems in my island country are in dutch)
Spanish ( I had spanish classes in school and Papiamentu is quite similar to spanish)
Japanese ( i studied japanese because my twin brother and i, in company with some of my friends we’re planning to visit Japan for the first time. That happend right before COViD started, at the end of 2019, so we ended up not going but i enjoyed the language study so much that i kept it going for 5 years now.)
Italian ( I’ve been learning Italian for the last few months)
Russian ( I like the way it sounds lol this is my most recent language)
Honorable mention:
Portuguese: i once tried learning portuguese but at that time my love for languages wasn’t as strong as it is now, so i stopped a short while after but…… my twin bro speaks it semi-fluently so i try to speak to him in portuguese, every chance i get.
The funny thing is most brazilian people i’ve interacted with in the past could somewhat understand my native language if i spoke slowly.
So therefore, i could prolly pick it up easily if i were to relearn Portuguese.
I learned that multiple languages thing real quick when I tried to refresh my Spanish at the same time as I am learning Sinhala (Sri Lankan language). I've been living in Sri Lanka for 10 months and learning Sinhala for most of my time here. One day I decided to do a duolingo lesson to refresh the Spanish I learned in school, and then I started forgetting Sinhala 😅
Im at 3 English native Spanish Portuguese learning my fourth for the past nine months (Russian) It’s easier but feels harder.

Ik spreek vloeiend Vlaams (Ja, ik kom uit België, maar niet Antwerpen xD Gent!!!) - Je parle très bien (je pense xD) français; c'est ma deuxième langue - I speak English fluently (I live in Canada, what do you want? xD) - Ich verstehe gut Deutsch und spreche diese schöne Sprache ein bisschen - Entiendo bien Espanol pero no puedo hablar esta lingua. Lo estoy aprendiendo ahora mismo. I LOOOOOOVE languages. Can't say if it is hard to learn. The only two I learned/am learning are German and Spanish; the other languages were a package deal I received at home, during infancy. Everything is easy then!!! Besides, I like it so much (the studying new languages part) that I can't say if it is difficult or not. Commitment, that's what it's all about, I guess. It's not that people just expect higher quality but once you're realy good and tu perds ton accents dans la langue les personnes partent du principe que tu es native speaker and they just don't get it if you confundes palavras ou não tens o vocabulário certo e a palavra que corresponde melhor. Á 10 anos a viver em França e o melhor que me podem dizer ainda é "oh mais t'es portugaise ? mais tu parles si bien et t'as même pas d'accent!"

I’ve experienced the exact thing you’re talking about with speaking and responding. I haven’t been speaking Spanish really in years and I can still understand it, but it is hard to respond. I have even forgotten how to conjugate some verbs.

The second point is so important. I stopped practicing Spanish and didn’t continue learning the grammar ahora el problema es que cuando quiero hablar, siento nerviosa y tímida jaja porque necesito pensar mas y traducir las frases de inglés a español y la otra persona esperando mis respuestas y la pressure gets to me. Entender más que hablar pero me odio eso, quiero hablar mas fluido😢

К сожалению, я не продалжал обучение до декабря прошлого года. А теперь, я могу поговорить по-русски и моя семья считает что это классно! Кстати я русский из-за моего прадедушки.
I believe that is all😅 English is my native language, but I've been exposed to Russian and Spanish my whole childhood, so that motivated me to want to learn and speak these languages and others. Ever since I found out I was a crazy mixture of things, I've been so fascinated by languages and cultures. Honestly though, I don't think I would have learned/be learning these langauges without the never-ending support of my family and my Lord Jesus Christ😁 In all seriousness, I wouldn't have come this far without them.

Aprendiendo español y italiano puede ser difícil porque, como dijiste, son similares! sin embargo, estoy mas fuerte en español y por eso i don’t always confuse myself as i don’t know much italian. HOWEVER me encuentro diciendo cosas como “und” en vez de “y”, “ich” en vez de “yo” y otras como asi. que extraño! ich spreche ein bisschen deutsch, auch ich confuse that with norsk! jeg er så glad at i love learning languages. I never confuse those with BSL or українська though 😂

Mi piace moltissimo imparare le lingue. Adesso sto studiando l’italiano con il mio marito que nasceu no Brasil. A gente fala português, espanhol, inglês, francês y ahora estamos aprendiendo el italiano, de hecho vamos a Italia esta semana para hacer un curso de italiano juntos. Najifunza pia Kiswahili kwa sababu nafanya kazi katika maendeleo ya kimataifa na nina miradi Tanzania na Kenya. Saya juga sedang belajar bahasa Indonesia karena orang tua saya dari Indonesia dan saya ingin menjaga hubungan saya dengan negara tempat orang tua saya dibesarkan. Je parle français et anglais tous les jours au bureau car je travaille dans le domaine du développement international et j’ai des collègues du monde entier so I usually speak 4 or 5 languages per week with family, friends and colleagues.
I have been doing all of this since I started learning English.
I did with Spanish and I am doing with Italian.
I advice my students do that but they do not listen!

Ik ga echt stuk dat je Nederlands met een Vlaams accent hebt geleerd. Het klinkt zo schattig. (Zegt een Nederlander). Ik ga volgend jaar een studie in België beginnen en hoop dat ik het Vlaams accent kan oppakken. Naast Nederlands praat ik ek Frysk, in taal dy't yn it noarden fan it lân sprutsen wurdt. Ich spreche auch fließend Deutsch, weil ich Deutsch auf Lehramst studiere und man ein gutes Niveau braucht, um vor der Klasse stehen zu dürfen und das Studium zu absolvieren. Ich habe auch zweimal für 4 Monate in Deutschland gewohnt. I'd say English is my fourth language. Expressing myself in German feels more personal than in English. Although I'm not sure which language I speak better. Duits is natuurlijk de taal waar ik veel voor heb moeten leren en ik ken de details beter om zo maar te zeggen. Engels heb ik opgepikt door jarenlang Engelstalige televisie te kijken, maar als ik Engels spreek, voelt dat zo... vlak. Maintenaint j'apprends français aussi, mais je ne peux pas dire beacoup. J'ai commencé regarder Spongebob en français et j'écoute podcasts avec text.
Ik zou zeggen dat een taal onder de knie krijgen even moeilijk blijft, maar hoe je het aanpakt steeds simpeler wordt. Inmiddels weet ik wel wat belangrijk is om te weten voor als je snel resultaat wilt boeken (chunks leren bijv., vooral die echt vaak in gesproken taal gebruikt wordt).

I know english because I moved to the U.S. , but I'm still not fluent because I'm really shy to practice my speaking skills, but I'm can understand pretty well. Estoy aprendiendo español con un curso en mi escuela, me parece interesante lo parecidos que son el español y el portugués, y al mismo tiempo son muy diferentes. 私も日本語を勉強しています。その理由は、日本を旅行したいからです。その文化を知り、ネイティブの人々と話せるようになりたいからです。また、言語、特に文字がとても美しいと思うからです。インターネットの情報だけを使って独学で勉強してみます . For now, these are the only languages that I know/I'm interested in learning, but maybe I will try to learn others. My goal is to become a polyglot before I turn 18!
Ik studeer Nederlands. Ik heb geen method. Dit is mijn eerste nieuwe taal. het is een moeilijke taal maar ik blijf leren.
I found my first attempt at learning a new language (Swedish) failed (I'm still A2 after 2 years) because I wasn't consistent and had no idea what I was doing. Now I'm studying Polish and I know what works best for my brain. I feel more comfortable in Polish after 1 month than swedish...
@@bookswmadi What would you say you're doing differently this time around? In my journey so far, I'm finding that if my learning resource is too structured, I retain less. I'm learning much more by listening to real conversations, music, etc., and then researching what I've heard or read.
@@SDavis2702 i do more sturctured study. I remember learning English this way and I found I enjoy study Polish this way. I typically spend 30-60 minutes a day doing Mango Languages or Colloquial Polish courses then I watch TV in Polish, watching either one episode or 2 before bed. I enjoy the grilling of vocab and the tests, which I know is a.... special thing not everyone enjoys 🙂

I agree with you, dass es schwierig ist, at lære flere sprog, particulièrement quand ils sont muy parecidos، pero لسه احب اتعلم اللغات.
Het wordt niet noodzakelijk makkelijker ma adesso ho una strategia per imparare. ça prends beaucoup de temps et du travail pero sé la manera que me conviene. You basically have the tools that work for you, wat het proces makkelijker maakt, but you still have to put in the work.
